That's probably because reality has finally set in: Shittsburgh has been a "pretender" all year. I expect the Jags to drop another 20 on the Squeelers by the time this thing is done. The Jags are the only team that I think can beat the Patriots.

The Steelers (and Big Ben especially) are not good. Not right now anyway. I'd bench his ass in the second half as all he has done is hurt his team.

That loss to the Pats put them in complete tailspin.

No, losing Marvel Smith and Aaron Smith put them in a tailspin. Ben's just having a bad game, it happens every once in a while to QBs not named Brady.

Credit to Shittsburgh, they made it a game of it but in the end the "pretender" was sent home.

Helluva' exciting and intense football game. After suffering through so many shitty and meaningless college bowl games, this showed the superiority of the NFL product and the reason I'm a big fan.

Rack the Jags and David Garrard. That QB draw on 4th and 2 was a brilliant play call and executed to perfection.

The Jags did a great job allowing Troy to play himself out of that play. But hey, you knew it was just a matter of time before the defense (#1 defense my ass) gave up a big play.

D Line needs to be a priority this coming draft. There's simply not enough depth at those positions.

Looked to me like BOTH QBs shit the bed on a couple of different plays in this game. Nevertheless, it was a good old-fashioned hard-hitting NFL playoff game that went down to the wire, and it was DAMN entertaining.

You mean "big games the Steelers lost" don't you? I don't recall too many INTs during their Super Bowl run.

BTW: Ben was sacked almost 50 times this year and still posted a 104 QB rating with a 3-1 TD to INT ratio. God help the NFL if he ever gets the kind of protection Brady gets.

Although going for two when the Steelers had made it 28-23 may have seemed like the right thing to do at the time, it turned out to bite them in the ass.

Especially after the bogus holding penalty nullified Hines Ward beautiful conversion, they try a QB draw from the 12 yards out? Big Ben isn't going to win many footraces in this league.

Seriously, I thought at the time it would come back to haunt them, and damned if it didn't. I'm sure there are a lot of folk in da' burgh this morning 2nd guessing Tomlin for that move

It was a very good game and the best team won. The Steelers problem is their Oline stinks. Davenport rushing for 25 yards yesterday, and Parkers ineffectiveness in the red zone all year are the indicators. Pittsburgh is a just another finesse team on offense until they get some Olinemen, end of story.

If Marvel Smith can get healthy, (and that is a big if when talking about a big man with back troubles) the tackle positions are OK. But I'll agree wholeheartedly that the center and guard positions will need serious upgrades. Mahan is a backup at best and they'll have to replace Faneca after he bolts for Arizona. As for Starks and Essex, maybe I'm starting to hit the Kool Aid, but I am still holding out hope that at least one of the two will round into form next year and provide some more depth.

IMO, the real glaring deficiency is the D-Line. The Steelers are not nearly as deep as they need to be in that area, and the injury to Aaron Smith exposed that. They get no pressure on their own and they have no flexibility to change their schemes when Smith is out.

That being said, the Steelers were where 20 other NFL teams wished they were this year. They went 7-1 in division and won the AFC North. They may be a little behind where I would have liked them to be, but at least they're not firing their coach or talking about sending their #1 receiver to Oakland because he's a fucking cancer. Steelerfan need only look at the real bottom feeders to know how good we have it.

I am -- by NO means -- a Steelers fan, but did you even watch the game?

There was no clear-cut "best team" in that game, which is what made it great.

Pittsburgh could have ... hell should have won that game, given that the NFL playoffs are ALL about momentum. Granted, in hindsight, Tomlin made a bad call, going for 2 the first time, but other than that ...

In the Super Bowl itself, Roethlisberger was 9 for 21 for 123 yards with no TDs and 2 interceptions.

That was an excellent game on Saturday.

Ward and Evans made the Jags D their personal bitches all game long and you run a fucking QB draw with the game in the balance??? That was a horseshit play call. You're up 1, the other team has to drive 40-50 yards worst case scenario (assume a 45 yard punt and no return) to kick a FG to beat you, and having a 250 slow white guy running for the 1st down is the best you can come up with???

I agree with you, ucant.
If Pittsburgh had been up by 4-or-more the call might have made sense, as J'ville would have to go the distance and put up 6 to beat you.
But even in that case, the call would still be questionable, IMO.
I think in that situation, Pittsburgh still needed to be playing to WIN, and they instead played not to lose, and it bit them in the ass.

Couple of points to consider though, if one wants to try to give Tomlin the benefit of the doubt.

- By calling a pass you risk an INC, stopping the clock.
- The run call forced the Faguars to burn their 2nd timeout.
- The draw call did have the 'surprise' element in it's favor -- which might have aided it's success -- but it didn't.

All very valid concerns. But you're forgetting the dumbest aspect of that call.

They ran to Trai Essex's side.

:meds: :meds: :meds: :meds:

That being said, it's no reason to can Bruce Arians, much less Mike Tomlin.

BTW: Did anybody notice the first drive? Looked like the Patriots out there. Too bad Ben only had a week to practice running that kind of short drop, quick pass, timing based offense. It showed later in the half once Mathis started making adjustments. Seems to me that in the long run, that kind of offense might just save Ben's body a whole lot of pounding.

Exactly. Especially after missing both 2-pt conversions. Players win games as long as coaches don't fuck it up. ('sup Marty S.?)

I think the draw play was a bad idea...but the real mistake, IMO, was punting. At all costs, you need to keep possession of the ball. Might as well try on 4th, even if you're on your own end of the field. If they convert, they win. If they don't, they lose.

Jacksonville went for the FG try on the next drive, but they could have scored a TD if they needed one, IMO. I say live or die with a 4th down conversion try.

Scintillating analysis from trev in this thread.

Simply put, you're high.

Pittsburgh was facing a 4th and 5 on it's own 27 yd line.
For the game, the Steelers were 7-14 on 3rd down conversions.
So the chance that they would convert on the play is definitely less than 50%.
Maybe a LOT less.

If they don't convert the game is essentially over, they lose.

By punting you are forcing the Faguars to MAKE PLAYS to win the game.

You won't convince me that Pittsburgh had better odds of winning by going for it than by punting the ball away.
Maybe if they were around midfield I might understand your logic, but even then, prolly not.

I realize that conventional wisdom would make the take seem strange. However, I personally had no earthly doubt that the Jags would score if they got the ball back. Failing to convert that third down was the point at which the game was lost. Having watched the Steelers return coverage give up big yardage all night and all season, I expected the jags to have great field position...and they did.

Most people are bitching about the 2 pt. conversion tries...I would also have gone for those, because on the final drive, Jax would simply have scored a TD.

At that point in the game, I would try to get the ball to Hines freaking Ward. A 5 yard conversion try would have been less of a gamble than giving the Jags the ball back.

Exactly, because NFL Films will mark down the Wild Card Jacksonville vs. Pittsburgh as a "suck-ass" playoff game. Or should I say "mundane," as in the drone of a fork-lifting, errrr, promoted white-collar KC idiot.

Fucking tard.

As it was, Jax started at almost the 50. They were moving the ball really well. I think the chances at converting a 4th were better than stopping them from kicking a FG.

But they did not know that was where Jax would start. It was easily the right call. And if not for the "play of the year"...

I'm not gonna pile on you here because I love aggressive coaching. But that would have gotten Tomlin run out of town.

Exactly...
Good to see you know your role.

Dude, you've got some posting habits that annoy me. For instance, what's up with constantly tossing out the broad brush "tards" and "idiots" gloss? Talk about the blindfolded fat kid swinging at a pinata, that's you're m.o.

Yet you somehow think you're better than the rest of us?

But what really set me off was that annoying scrolling halfway down the page to add a  emoticon. What the fuck is wrong with you, idiot?

Go spam .net with that garbage.

Or clean your dumbass act up. Just trying to help so you don't 'tard up the NFL forum any further. Be nice if you took that advice in the other forums as well
