Media recruits another 5 star for Notre Dame

ND got a verbal commitment from 5 star RB Cierre Wood this past weekend. They also got a commitment from 4 star DT Tyler Stockton and are about to get 4 star RB Theo Riddick. This is not a result of hard work by the staff, it's completely because ESPN and NBC.

Either way, a helluva get for ND. It's their best TB commitment in 20 years, and the third straight year they have gone into California and taken one of the top skill position players. Again, all the media, not hard work by Weis.

I thought ESPN hated ND. Wow, it's nice of them to contact these kids and help the school with their recruiting. If I see any kids next year who are studs I'll make sure I contact the ND/ESPN recruiting person to get on it quickly.

Seriously man, why do you take shots at Notre Dame so offensively. It's only the truth. Wow, good for Charlie and his fatass......he works hard at recruiting. Yeah, him and EVERY COACH IN AMERICA. But he has advantages that have nothing to do with current program stature or location. The media jerks off to ND and if you took off those Blue and Gold goggles you'd realize this.

I do tire of the way ND gets their ass kissed by the NCAA. I also don't quite understand how recruits can just ignore the '07 season, that trainwreck falls squarely on the shoulders of the guy they are jumping to commit to, Weis.

But in ND's defense it not only has football-tradition but is also a highly respected university. A degree from there is worth more down-the-road than one from most other 1A schools. I know the 'skers have lost a few guys to ND because the degree from ND could open more doors for them.

I think many of these kids have the mentality that they're going to come into a situation and make a difference. The few kids that I've spoken to regarding ND's record from last year and why they committed say they want to come into ND and turn it around. They want to be the ones that return the once proud program to national prominence. Looking at what ND has done the last few years it's no surprise top notch talent wants to go there because they'll step in and play in a short time. What's wrong with that?

We're a solid program that's had some decent success in my lifetime and most programs in the country would be thrilled to have the success we've had since 1981. That is it. Nothing more, nothing less.

But Notre Dame hasn't done jack squat since I was just becoming a teenager......I am now just a couple of months away from my 28th birthday. Think about that for a second. How many people my age really remember Notre Dame being good? Other than absolute sports nuts like myself......probably not that many. Now, imagine a recruit being 10-11 years younger than me......

So, assuming you're right about the media not jerking off to ND and therefore helping ND lure players to South Bend......explain to me exactly what Charlie is selling other than a damn fine academic University??

Notre Dame has this going against them....

1.A 3-9 season in 2007
2.A 15 year stretch of medicority
3.A fan base that runs coaches out of town quickly
4.A fan base that is already getting on the current coach
5.A football program that has had less or equal success to many other programs in the region over the last 10-15 years
6.A college town that is no more appealing than many of those schools in the area that have enjoyed equal to greater success than ND since about 1993
7.A program that is not in a conference and therefore, cannot win conference championships

And what they have going for them

1.Arguably the most successful program throughout history
2.A great academic institution
3.A coach that has been an assistant for 3 Super Bowl teams
4.Decent, but not great facilities
5.Located within 2 hours of Chicago and Indianapolis
6.A nationwide fan base

While obviously ND has many positives, there's a lot more they have going against them. The location is pretty good considering all of the big cities within driving distance, but many region schools can say the same thing. Your coach has been an assistant for 3 Super Bowl Championship teams, but that's exactly what he was......an assistant. Not a head coach. It is the most successful program throughout history, arguably, but most recruits are concerned with programs that have been successful recently, and ND has not.

It also is a top academic institution which is great for recruits that make academics first and football second. And there are a lot of kids that do. But seriously, how many 4 and 5 star recruits really think about academics first? 1 out of every 50 at best. That's not to say they don't care about academics, but they're thinking more about getting to the NFL than getting a good degree. So I don't think Charlie is able to use the academics aspect of ND to his advantage all that much with the top recruits because these recruits know they can get a solid education at a Big-10 school or other places. I can't imagine academics being the deciding factor for very many 5-star prospects. I'm sure some of them it is, but not very many.

So now I pose to you the question......based on all of that, if Notre Dame isn't getting a ton of help from the media constantly talking about them, what is Charlie selling? The way I see it is the media is doing everything in their power to convince us college football fans that Notre Dame is still a top-notch program despite the fact that they haven't done anything on the field over the last 15 years or so. And everyone buys into it. Why else is Notre Dame still such a huge topic of discussion on any message board or on any sports talk show? It's because the media is desperately trying to keep that program alive and Charlie is using that to his advantage. Since Notre Dame is being discussed so much nationally, he's selling these clueless youngsters on Notre Dame being this elite program when the results on the field over a long period of time do not support that.

So, Killian or Terry........other than great effort, how is Charlie able to lure these recruits to South Bend without offering up cash or gifts (and I do not think he's doing that) since the media doesn't play a big part in his recruiting success as you say???

Now, let's go to reality . . .

Since you mentioned the last 10-15 years as a guideline . . .

Records over the last 10 years:

ND: 72-50
Iowa: 64-59

Over the last 15 years:

ND: 113-68-1
Iowa: 99-80-1

BCS appearances since inception of BCS:

ND: 3 (would have had one more had the current BCS rules been in place in '02).
Iowa: 1

That's an average of almost one full win per season edge that ND has over Iowa in both time periods. Consider further that ND's run includes two coaching tenures universally regarded as failures, and a third as to whom the jury is still definitely out. By contrast, for most of that run Iowa has had a coach who is among the most respected in college football, and sometimes mentioned as a candidate for a NFL job.

Yet people like you routinely go to the "ND sucks" card while pimping the schools they root for. Thing is, you're actually right, to an extent. ND HAS sucked over the past 10-15 years -- by our standards, anyway. And even so, there are still plenty of 1-A programs who "haven't" sucked, at least by their own standards, looking up at us in the standings. Including the team you root for.

That, in a nutshell, is why ND is still relevant in the media discussion, and rightfully so. The worst decade in our history has still been better than the best decade at many 1-A schools.

Excellent post Terry. You put into words exactly what I was trying to get across. ND "sucking" is still better than a vast majority of teams. I guess JON thought USC was dead as well in the 80's and 90's, given their shitty play and awful coaching. Sure took them a long time to get turned around.

But let's address JON's points about ND, line by line:

1. Cannot be argued. That was the worst year in over 50 years for ND.
2. True, by ND standards. But, as Terry pointed out, that mediocre run also resulted in multiple first round draft picks, BCS appearances and a few top 10 finishes.
3. Link? If you are talking about Willingham, you couldn't win that debate if I argued it for you. If you think ND is bad now imagine if he had a chance to recruit for 5 full years.
4. Define "getting on". Questioning decisions and coaching hires and generally wondering if he is the correct coach? Yep. But as I've stated before, Weis differs from both Davie and Willingham because he is actively trying to correct the situation. He has changed his coaching staff multiple times and has turned play calling over to someone else. He appears to at least be trying to change.
5. The only programs in the region who have had more success than ND over the past 15 years have been Michigan and Ohio State. Those two programs have also had more success than many programs all across the country.
6. Notre Dame is like many other college towns. Once you get outside of it, it sucks. But, Chicago is about an hour and a half away.
7. No one gives a shit about conference championships besides fans of schools who aren't supposed to win them.

You know JON, you should really listen to Lou Holtz. Burning down your neighbor's house won't make yours look any better.
