St. Petersburg, Washington will host bowl games in 2008
ESPN.com news services

Updated: May 1, 2008, 2:18 PM ET

There will be two new NCAA postseason football games next season -- one in St. Petersburg, Fla., the other in Washington, D.C.

The St. Petersburg Bowl will be played between Dec. 20-23 at Tropicana Field, the home of the Tampa Bay Rays. It will match teams from the Big East and Conference USA.

"The St. Petersburg Bowl is another great bowl opportunity for the Big East," league commissioner Michael Tranghese said. "The game is played in a Big East market and already has generated great interest in the local community."

Tropicana Field has been home to big league baseball since 1998 and has hosted several major sporting events, including the NCAA Final Four in 1999.

The domed stadium also has served as a home for the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning and the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League, but is a newcomer to college football.

The NCAA also approved a "Congressional Bowl" in Washington, D.C. It will feature Navy against an ACC opponent.

A proposed game for Salt Lake City was turned down.

Last year there were 32 bowl games. There were 71 teams which had 6-6 records to qualify for a bowl game.

In two other bowl notes:

• The Cotton Bowl, which has been played on New Year's Day in recent years, is moving to Jan. 2 starting next year. It will also be played in the afternoon, rather than a 10 a.m. start. Next year's Cotton Bowl will be the last at its current location. The game will move to the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium in 2010.

• The Papajohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., announced that its matchup in 2008 will feature teams from the Big East and Southeastern Conference.

The NCAA Postseason Football Licensing Subcommittee also renewed licenses for the Allstate Sugar, AT&T Cotton, AutoZone Liberty, BCS National Championship, Bell Helicopter Armed Forces, Brut Sun, Capital One, Champs Sports, Chick-fil-A, Emerald, Fed Ex Orange, Gaylord Hotels Music City, GMAC, Roady's Humanitarian, Insight, International, Konica Minolta Gator, Meineke Car Care, Motor City, New Mexico, Outback, Pacific Life Holiday, Papajohns.com, PetroSun Independence, Pioneer Las Vegas, R+L Carriers New Orleans, Rose, San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia, Sheraton Hawaii, Texas, Tostitos Fiesta and Valero Alamo bowls.

The subcommittee, meeting in Weston, Fla., also reported about 1.6 million fans attended last season's bowl games, and about $222 million in revenue from those games was distributed to the participating teams and conferences.
It's nice that more kids will get the bowl game experience, but the bowls themselves have been diluted to the point of mediocrity. It's only a matter of time before they have so many bowl games that some team with a losing record will have to go to one.

Wonderful, 2 more crap bowls for teams that don't deserve to see the post season.

Does anyone remember when bowls were a reward for a successful season not a mediocre one?

if your an old school big8/12 fan, nothing worse than seeing the Orange bowl these days. A once great bowl, that had many great teams and players, is now a farce with a BCS tag. It has no luster or shine as it once did. Big8 teams were proud to go to orange bowl, only the best went, now its in a committee hands on who goes, thus you get a Kansas team that not only didnt win it's division, it didnt even play for conference title.

Just curious what happens if Navy is not bowl eligible?

I suspect it'll be the same thing as if a conference fails to produce enough bowl-eligible teams to fill all its bowl slots, i.e., the bid will then go at-large.

You know what...I'm all for it at this point. I'm one of the biggest playoff honks on this board, but I'm also realistic. I know we won't see one anytime soon. Perhaps not even in my lifetime.

That being said, as long as shit bowls are what we're stuck with, I say BRING 'EM ON. The more, the merrier. It's just another opportunity to watch college football. Basic math tells me that more college football never = a bad thing.

The bowls can't get any MORE cheesy, can they? So what's the harm in adding a couple/few more?

Integrity of the game... not that there is much left.

I agree to a point now that CFB has basically become the NBA where half the damn teams make it to postseason play. At least the NBA is a playoff structure.

It has already been destroyed, so we might as well get the opportunity to watch more CFB. That's my point.

Why does everyone keep referring to these bowl games as "postseason* games, as if they mean something ? Only one bowl game has any significance whatsoever, the rest are glorified exhibition games for a bogus ranking system.

Because "post season" games include, but are not limited to championship games or games of "relevance."

Glad I could help, trixmonkey.

“Congressional Bowl” should probably feature the two most corrupt programs in the country, as voted on by all Division 1 coaches.

Guess there's only 1 postseason game in the NFL too. What a dumbfuck you are.

Dumbfuck, I said CFB and NBA have a postseason. I compared the two saying they were watered down. I differentiated the two by saying at least the NBA was a playoff. Postseason is not synonymous with playoff. Once again, dumbfuck.

I wish the Big East were able to broker a better conference to come down to the St. Pete Bowl. While they made the PapaJohn's bowl a bit better by making it an SEC-Big East matchup I'd have to think it wouldn't be that difficult to find another ACC, Big 10 or Big 12 team that wouldn't want to come to FL in December.

Considering all of the Big 10’s existing tie-ins, you probably would have gotten a 6-6 Northwestern team this year.

I'll take that over a C-USA team.
