And this just in: Weather honks are saying we could get up to 5" more of rain tonight.

This situation is going to get much worse before it gets better.

I've done a little work each of the past two days and went to a Red Cross seminar this afternoon. Will be working with them help in shelters for the next few days. My wife and I went to Mercy hospital last night for a bit. That was an awesome story as several hundred volunteers showed up to help fight back waters. Flood waters hit the 500 year plain. I thank God I'm in this community. It's awesome how it's responded to this flood. Culver and the senators did a fly over today. FEMA will be here in a few days. I hear that the 380 bridge might be closed down. Hope not. We'll see. Again, I love this town. No place I'd rather live in the world.

As awesome as Cedar Rapids might be responding to the flood, I think I'll pass on the whole living on a flood plain thing.

Dude. It's just the downtown and some areas to the southwest of the river that are flooded. At most, I'd say about 15% of the city. Most of it isn't in a flood plain. And, you must remember, a lot of what's getting hit is in the 500 year plain. Astounding, yes, but not exactly an area that's in a constant threat of flooding.

That said, no way I'd live in Iowa City. I hear they're bouncing around the idea of evacuating the entire city. We're newer to the area, but I guess that IC/Coralville floods practically every year.

From what I've heard, they are dealing with this by closing the locks on the upper Mississippi and telling barges to get over it. That should buy some time and allow the Cedar River to drain properly.

Yea - it's bad. Not floating away like the eastern part, few of the exits closed / impassible.
Since it's all farmland north of St. Joe it all just looks like rice deltas now.

I'm on high ground here E of KC and my sump is running at least twice an hour.

Yep, drove to Council Bluffs last Saturday and the rivers Tarkio, Nodaway, and Nishnabotna look close to joining and becoming another Great Lake. It won't take much more rain and then I-29 is going under.

The usual suspects won't like my comments but this kind of flooding is happening so much more often than 100 years because of man's invlovment with the natural movement of bodies of water and the landscape in general. And you don't think a lot of wildlife is hindered by flooding to this degree? Think again. It's sad. Clean it all up and pay for all the damage and hurt all the animals and then we'll see it happen all over again in 10 years. Man needs to just step back and let nature be nature. But as long as money is to be made we'll see the trashing of nature.

Do you think river levees are bad? What about canals? Dams? If we took a helicopter tour over south Louisiana, I could show you many examples of "man's involvement with the natural movement of bodies of water" that allow communities to exist.

And I could also show you how man's involvement with nature has helped nature, a huge example may be found offshore at every one of those oil rigs. An offshore oil rig becomes an artificial reef, a entire new marine ecosystem is created, nature loves it. I prefer to go fishing, but Louisiana is now the world leader when it comes to spearfishing, those guys go diving along the rigs for that. Check it out, first one is an amberjack and the second is a lemonfish:





The point is that man and nature can co-exist peacefully, and that is a nice thing. Have a nice weekend, Dan.

The other day, Kid Nashville logged in and just leveled anyone that happened to be around with some incredibly devastating smack posts. It's really got me wondering just exactly what the goal is around here.

I'm thinking, as long as everyone likes the idea of course, of transitioning this board away from smacking, and towards self-help, exploration, and support. I'd like to think that you'd be willing to take a role in this. All of the levees and Army Corps involvement are not for a nature/mankind symbiosis. A lot of times its to commercially develop land that is currently a flood plain. Build up a levee in one place, water that would normally settle in a flood plain goes somewhere else. Of course, where the water is displaced is not the problem of the community and commercial developers that benefitted from a new levee.

This is a huge pet peeve with me. Worthless dumbfukk politicians find it neccessary ro "survey the damage themselves".

First off, if you wanna survey it, turn on CNN or Foxnews. A politician getting in the way of an emergency situation like this is a fukking criminal act. Trouble is, if they don't do it, their critics will claim they don't care. And the politicians themselves don't have the brains/balls to answer back that they don't want to get in the way.
