i'm going to be rocking a Vandy av this summer for a buddy of mine going through a hard time. does it mean anything in the long run to help a quadriplegic by running an avvie....no. but, to me, it means something. "represent".
make no mistake. even though Vandy is my alma mater.....i grew up in Norman. Both sides of my family made the land run. Sooner born, Sooner bred.
i do realize that no one gives a flying fuck. but, self-aggrandizement is cool. cool enough to be a Journey song, at least. "when the lights go down, in the city...."

schools who compete with kids who believe in academics!!!
Vandy has had a couple pretty good years in sports. hoops made the Sweet 16 a year ago, pretty good year last year too and were a #1 seed in baseball a year ago. Football team was almost bowl eligible (again) even playing in the *meat grinder*. they were awful in everything except women's hoops when i was there.
thanks Jsc.

Rice is a great school. it won't get the rep from sports fans since while it's by far the best private school in the southwest it's not the token Big XII conference private (like Stanford, Duke, N'Western, Vandy)....instead, that goes to Baylor. Despite what BU people now seem to think, Baylor is a good but not great and still very expensive school. it's closer to SMU than it is to Rice in terms of academic caliber. it's probably the 4th or 5th best school in Texas.
Rice, UT, ATM, Trinity, SMU, Baylor...

Congrats to Stanford. Now with that said the schools that offer the most programs are the ones who are the most likely to win the thing. How many schools field a rifle, bowling, or skiing team? Not many but winning a title in those really helps your standing in the directors cup.

Bill Byrne screwed the football-program significantly by blowing so much of the $$ the team made on chasing that cup. We are Nebraska. We do field a surprisingly large number of teams and are usually good in a respectable amount of them. But we just aren't likely to beat-out guys like Stanford, UCLA, or Texas. It would be nice but just isn't likely to happen.
Crimson, hope your friend is doing OK. As a respiratory therapist I deal with a fair amount of quads that have ended-up trached and ventilator-dependant. Hope he doesn't have to go that route. So much of what quality of life these people have left is gone at that point.
