Have fun with that. I did that a couple of years ago on a radio station in Des Moines and it was hell. Having to spend my friday night's watching mediocre high school football was just brutal. Never will do that again.

Yeah, but even in Texas you've got a bunch of guys playing that can barely walk and chew gum at the same time. Sure, you've got the Vince Young's and the Chrissy Simms but the majority of the players playing won't even get a sniff at a JUCO at most of the high schools. Doesn't excite me to watch 5-star prospects making a fool of 5'10 160 LB's that run a 5.2 40. Doesn't matter the state, high school football is unwatchable to me.

Don't get me wrong, Friday Night Light's was a good book (movie was disappointing.....after watching Bad Santa I just can't imagine him playing a football coach and take him serious!), but I still don't completely understand the passion for high school football.

We'd both agree that Iowa high school football athletes don't stack up to Texas, but you'd be real surprised at how passionate those small towns are for their local high school team. Go up to Madrid, Iowa and catch a game. It's insane. Town is probably about 1,000 people and they're one of the best Class 1A schools in the state every year. The Madrid Tigers are like crack to those folks. It's kinda like a poor man's Hawkeye football (literally and figureatively) in a sense that.....well, everyone in that town looks and dresses like they're poor and they support their team like Hawkeye fans support their team. But it's very annoying to watch not only because the offensive linemen are 5'7 160 pounds but also because there's nothing but giggly hillbilly girls and 12 year olds galore screaming at the top of their lungs in the crowd. And then there's Farmer Bob who seems to think it's Kosher to question the manhood of some 16 year old kid that missed a tackle. He's a fucking pussy, that's the problem. It's so easy to make a tackle in the open field and if you can't do it consistently at age 16 then you're a pussy.....just ask Farmer Bob. Afterall, Farmer Bob played football for Madrid back in 1967 and made 2nd team All-conference at linebacker so he knows everything there is to know about football.

Even worse than all of that is the god damn game itself is just plain unwatchable. 3 guys lineup in the backfield. Quarterback either hands it off up the middle, to the right, to the left or keeps it himself. Once a quarter he throws the ball 20 yards down the field to a WR standing 2 yards beyond the line of scrimmage and then the coach decides he's better off playing smash mouth football behind his 160 pound offensive line. And that shit actually works......play after play. Booooorrrrrriiiiinnnngggg!!!

I realize the talent is much greater in Texas, but overall that's probably the way it is at most Texas high schools. 90% of the QB's have worse accuracy than Michael Vick or Vince Young. 90% of the offensive linemen are under 220 pounds. 90% of the WR's have Freddie Mitchell's hands that were not blessed by God. And 90% of the DB's trip over their own shoes trying to cover a simple 5 yard out pass. Doesn't matter the state......it's mostly the same. I've seen plenty of "talented" Iowa high school teams over the years and they all bore me. Heck, my old school wins the state title just about every year and has 2-3 guys go on to get scholarships at schools in BCS conferences each year and a dozen other that play ball at the mid-major level, 1-AA or JUCO. Belive me, in most seasons West Des Moines Valley could hold their own against any high school in the country. Still isn't gonna get me to come back and watch a game because to me, it's just too darn boring!

Not knocking you for liking high school football, that's just my opinion.

I'm basing it on how many kids they send on to play college ball and from the games I saw back in HS and the few games I've seen since HS. I didn't say they'd beat the Texas powerhouses, but they'd hold their own most definitely.

You have a 4-star offensive lineman coming to East Lansing next year from Valley High and he's one of 3 or 4 players that have already committed to BCS schools.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you just get married not too long ago? In all likelihood, that means that you might expect a rugrat or two a few years down the road. If one of them turns out male, you just might wind up spending a significant portion of your time watching high school football in about 15-25 years from now.

Word to the wise. Just sayin'.

Btw, my kid is playing youth football for the first time this year. A big kid for his age, he's playing with older kids because of his size. He's playing OT and LB. Not the greatest football you'll ever see, skill-wise or competition-wise, but I'm excited for it. Hell, I'm even gonna miss at least portions of most if not all of the ND games for the first 2/3 of the season because of it (his games are on Saturday afternoons, at either 3:00 or 4:30).

Watching your own kid is different. Of course, if I raise a future Al Bundy I'll go nuts when he scores 4 touchdowns in a game for Polk High! Same goes for any family member in any youth/HS sport. But unless a family member is playing, I just don't care. You'll watch anything involving your kids/relatives.

I really only bounced in to say that I spent a month in West Des Moines, and wasn't impressed with a lot of the local talent, on either side of the ball. If you walk around any town in Texas, even the smaller towns, you will see guys that LOOK like football players. They do not look like the 5'10", 160-pound Jon's of the world. I'm not normally one to defend Tejas as I hate them with a primordial passion that burns with the fire of 1000 clap-ridden penii... but the high school football there is absolutely sick.

Everybody's right about the rednecks with nothing better to do, pushing their kids, etc... but they're not right about the money. Those schools have money. Those programs have facilities. If I took a picture of the weight room at my current high school (although, granted, it doesn't have football) and posted it, many of you would cry. So, they're the dangerous kind of redneck; the 'neck with financial backing. And in those small Tejas (Oklahoma, Iowa, etc, etc...) towns, kids with nothing to do either focus, or get in trouble. The focused kids are the ones that realize, "Hey, maybe I can go somewhere with this... What the shit else do I have to do in this town besides lift weights, study, and try to get my dick wet...?" The kids that get in trouble are the ones that do everything the other kid does... only without the ultimate goal of leaving the town. That's why they get into trouble. They're stupid.

I didn't play football. I was a baseball stud. Played hoops too, but wasn't anything special. There weren't any 5'10 160 pounders playing football at my school. WDM Valley has become a machine. Producing a lot of D-1 talent, winning the state title every year. You'd be surprised how many guys we have out there playing D-1 and 1-AA ball.

The focused kids are the ones that realize, "Hey, maybe I can go somewhere with this... What the shit else do I have to do in this town besides lift weights, study, and try to get my dick wet...?" The kids that get in trouble are the ones that do everything the other kid does... only without the ultimate goal of leaving the town. That's why they get into trouble. They're stupid.

My problem isn't the student athletes at these small towns. It's the parents I have a problem with. No one gives a shit that you scored 4 touchdowns at Polk High and back in the day you and your team made it to state. Small town folk loves there high school football. They take it too seriously. It's okay to support the local school. Got no problem with that. But a lot of these small towns they act like these kids are pros. If the team loses....."fuck that dadgum quarterback. He sucks. Back when I played, I didn't throw no picks. I done scored me some touchdowns. I'd rather get my Ford Pickup stuck in a puddle of mud than watch this here damn sumbitch quarterback the team I led to the state finals back in '69." Don't get me wrong, I love small towns. Small town bars can be good fun.......as long as it's not a football Friday! Hicks from the Sticks are hilarious just not when they're talking about their local HS team.

I think it's funny the assumptions people make. I'm not saying they'd beat the top Texas/Florida/California high schools, I'm just saying they wouldn't get embarrassed. If they can play with the big boys than why do they send a few guys on to get scholarships at BCS conference schools every year along with many other 1-AA and JUCO schools? If you take away Texas/Florida/California/Ohio State, I guarantee you they'd not only play tough with the top schools in each state but BEAT 99% of them. I've watched some of those HS games on ESPN over the last couple of years and I can guarantee you they could play those guys tough, if not beat many of them. Could any other Iowa school do that? Fuck no. Not a chance. There's a reason we win state every year and almost never lose. The other Iowa schools (even the top tier schools) would get dominated by top schools in many states. But not West Des Moines Valley. They can hang with anyone. You should watch them play sometime if you don't believe me.
