Scarey Smart Resigns
Ron prince is done at KST, rumors were, that Snyder would take over to finish the season, but it loooks like Prince will finish the season out.
#1 on their candidates list is TCU head coach. Gets him a BCS gig, and he will be given time to turn it around, so its possible

he's a KSU grad but i think it would be a horrible move. He'll get better offers.Jsc810 wrote:Why would Gary Patterson want to leave TCU for Kansas State?

Re: Scarey Smart Resigns
I suppose his lack of success makes one appreciate how good of a coach Bill Snyder really was. He always liked the JUCO players but he built that program to the brink of a perennial power and now it has taken a quite a few steps back. Never really thought too much of his success until he was gone.

BCS conference job = better than Mountain West job. Although I agree he should hold out for a better program...Jsc810 wrote:Why would Gary Patterson want to leave TCU for Kansas State?

Re: Scarey Smart Resigns
I heard it mentioned on an OKC radio station (so take it with a grain of salt) that Patterson was at the top of Tennessee's list along with Cutcliffe, Muschamp, and Chris Peterson. SEC Honks, any truth to this? Would love to see Venables get the K-State job, though not for the same resons most Sooner fans want him to get it.
Re: Scarey Smart Resigns
They should've pulled their heads out of their asses and hired him before Prince. Now? I doubt they can get Patterson. IMO they'll be hard-pressed to get any of the real hot names from the nonBCS guys.
Brent Venables has been talked about, maybe him. I doubt OU-fan would bitch much.
I'd look at Bud Foster.
I doubt they'd take it but maybe a Bowden or Fulmer. Some have actually mentioned Franchione.

I wonder if they'd have any interest in Dan Hawkins. I hear he's a real up-and-comer...

Why KST is a decent(not great or good gig) gig
You only have to win your division to play for a BCS bowl. Nebraska, ISU,CU are way down, i don't see CU ever being a power, Nebraska will never be a perrenial power, but they will be a North contender yearly again, might take some time, and the right hire. Isu will never be more than a 1 year a decade wonder.
Then you have KU, who will fall back to a 5-8 win team, MU, who if they keep talent instate, will fight for North, but be more of a consistant 7-9 win team.
So, your in a BCS conference, you have to really beat 3 teams in your division, and go 2-1 in South matchups and your looking at a new years day bowl, and possible shot at BCS bowl with Big12 title win
Tejas and Tech wont have it easy when they go to KC for Big12 title game, cold weather, possible rain, etc all looms. Not exactly 80 degrees and Austin.

Not sure I buy K State as a step up for Bielema. It’s a small but somewhat vocal minority up here calling for Bielema’s head, but most fans still believe Bielema deserves a couple more years. When he leaves Wisconsin, I have to believe it will be for some man-love from theJON.e wrote:rumors around here in kc are that snyder's #1 on the wish list and that he feels he retired too soon. if he doesn't end up coaching the team, patterson and brett bielema are next on the list. the teleconference was verrrrrrry interesting. k-state's AD kinda talked himself into a corner and ended up saying that they want a new coach in place in the next 17 days. the only way that is possible is if snyder takes over or if k-state can work out a deal with wisconsin to get bielema early. i guess he's not super popular up there and would be willing to take the job. talking heads on the radio today said that if bielema knew snyder was going to retire when he did, he would have stayed with k-state as a coordinator and taken over when snyder left.Adelpiero wrote:Ron prince is done at KST, rumors were, that Snyder would take over to finish the season, but it loooks like Prince will finish the season out.

another theory is that kstate canned prince so abruptly because fulmer's departure at tennessee has UT peeps eyeballing patterson and kstate wanted to get in on that bidding war, too.
sure has been an interesting couple of days around here.

Re: Scarey Smart Resigns
if, somehow, Bielema ends up at KSU that means the writing was on the wall in Madison.
KSU had a nice 10 year spurt of national relevance but historically it's one of the worst program in CFB. I think while the popular argument among OU fans is Colorado you could also make a plausible case that the Big 8 team that benefited the most from OU sucking in the 90's (94-98, really) was KSU. Until Chad May's bunch, KSU was very much a basketball school with a great history.

Re: Scarey Smart Resigns
looks like it's Patterson to the Cats. I'm surprised, middle of the season....that's kind of iffy in my book. bowl game is one thing....but the Frogs had a lot to play for until last nights collapse (which all of a sudden takes on a different hue). Won't have to buy any new purple ties, though.

edit: interesting thing about Patterson (to old timey Big 8 people mostly) is he wasn't even a Snyder guy. According to wiki, he was an asst. to Jim Dickey in 1981. Dickey had one bowl team at least with his son Darrell Ray Dickey playing QB....which for K-State inna say was big time.

A small vocal minority, Sam. Johnny-come-lately fans who latched onto a rising program and now seem to believe that UW is USC-Madison.Sudden Sam wrote:Good lord. according to texags.com, Patterson is on Dallas radio denying it right now. no contact with KSU. he's angry.

"Patterson staying at TCU
Contrary to recent reports, TCU head coach Gary Patterson is not leaving to go to Kansas State.
I just got done talking with Patterson in his office at TCU, and he said the reports are not true.
"I'm not real happy with people who fire people before the season is over," Patterson said. "And I would be less happy with anybody who would ever talk about taking another job until they finish their own"

Gary Patterson is rather perturbed about Kansas State report

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips
TCU coach Gary Patterson called into ESPN 103.3's Galloway and Co. to make it clear that he is still TCU's coach despite the report that he's accepted the Kansas State gig.
I was driving during Patterson's appearance, so I couldn't jot down any quotes, but let's just say that he was not very happy. He went so far as to say that the report decreased the odds that he'd be willing to listen if his alma mater comes calling. (His feelings, of course, are subject to change based on dollar figures being tossed around on voicemail messages.)
When I first heard about the report, I figured it made sense that TCU struggled in the second half of last night's loss to Utah because the Horned Frogs head coach quit at halftime. But that's not the case.

Re: Scarey Smart Resigns
I kind of touched on this in Sam's thread, but I'm curious why you don't see CU ever being a power (other than the fact that you just hate them). They're the only team in the North besides Nebraska with an MNC to their name. The Denver/Boulder area is an exponentially more appealing place to live than any of the other North schools. They're able to recruit the West and the Midwest, as well as pull the occasional stud from SoCal and/or Texas. There's really no reason CU shouldn't be a national power, assuming they ever find the right coach.Adelpiero wrote:Why KST is a decent(not great or good gig) gig
