Who gets the 10 BCS slots?
We know there are 10 BCS slots to be filled. We also know that under no circumstances can more than 2 teams from one conference play in BCS games. So with that said how do they fill out?
Figure the SEC and Big 12 each get two teams. That is (4).
Throw in the other conference champs, Big Least, Big 11, Pac 1, ACC. That gives us (8).
No Notre Dame.
Now if Oregon State wins out then they are in and you would assume that USC would get an at large bid. (9).
Who then stays home? In the above it would certainly be Ohio State, because Utah would have to be picked. Which would then also leave Boise State outside looking in.
If Oregon State loses a game, does Ohio State take USC's at large bid, and still prevent the second mid major from getting in? Does Boise State's final three opponents (combined 10 wins) help drop them below Ball St?
Discuss.

Quizz torched the USC defense, something the Cal offense could only dream about doing. Granted that doesn't mean he will do it to Cal, but I like his chances.

Re: Who gets the 10 BCS slots?
If USC wins the Pac-10 outright and assuming Penn State beats IU & MSU, they will most likely play each other in the Rose Bowl. If Ohio State wins out, I see either the Sugar or Fiesta picking them up. Unfortunately for non-BCS conferences, that probably means that either Utah or Boise St will get left out. Kinda sucks, but it's all about the benjamins and tOSU will always bring a boatload of fans to any bowl site. Personally, I would be happy with a Capital One bowl appearance as bad as our offense has performed this season.

Re: Who gets the 10 BCS slots?
I think 3 of the 4 at-large bids are already spoken for.
Highest-ranked non-BCS team gets one (will be an automatic selection, given the rankings of ACC and Big East champions).
Big XII and SEC each get one (one of them, although not both, will be an automatic selection).
That leaves one at-large bid yet to be determined. In order of priority:
1. USC will get this bid if both Oregon State and USC win out.
2. tOSU gets the bid if they and Penn State both win out, and either Oregon State or USC loses. There's also a possibility that Michigan State might pick up the bid if they win out and tOSU wins out, subject, of course, to the same condition precedent.
3. A second non-BCS team will get the last bid only if: (a) either Oregon State or USC loses; and (b) either Penn State or tOSU loses.
As L45B said, it's not about getting the best matchups, it's about
USC or tOSU brings more
to the table than does Utah, Boise State or Ball State. So two of these teams will be on the outside looking in unless an upset or two happens along the way.
The same rule applies to non-BCS bowls, for that matter. And that has me concerned that ND will finish 7-5 and wind up in the Gator Bowl. This season, I'd rather have either the Meineke Car Care Bowl, PapaJohns.com Bowl or International Bowl. We'd have a better chance of winning one of those games.

Ok, here are your BCS picks
Big12(2 go) Tech/OU/Tejas/MU MU gets in with a Big12 title win If not, OU/Tech/Tejas fight for 2 spots
SEC (2 go) Florida/Bama
Pac10(1 go) USC
Big10(2 go) PSU/tOSU/MSU Big10 winner +1
bigleast (1 goes) WVU/Pitt/Cinccy Bigleast winner
ACC(1 goes) Winner of Acc title game goes
that is 9 picks. leaves 1? so Utah gets it. If Boise would go outside of the west coast and play some one from the BCS, i would give it to them. Their conference is weak. Utah in a much better conference( TCU and BYU)
But if Big10 only gets 1 bid, then i could see Boise.

50/50 that Missouri gets in by winning the Big XII. The conference champ is in unless #1 and #2 are both from the same conference. Good chance that #1 and #2 could both be from the Big XII even if the champ comes from the North.

If MU wins, there is no chance 2 Big12 teams play for the title, ZERO chance.
Bama and Florida will get that 2nd BCS title bid. Meaning only 1 big12 team gets in.
If tech/OU wins big12 title game, then it is possible OU/tech play Tejas, if Bama loses. but thats the only shot.

Taking pride in covering the spread now? If Oregon State wins by 1, then that is all that matters.
I think Ball State will lose 1 of their last 2, so they will fall back. Utah deserves a bid if they win out.
Which brings us to Boise State. Oregon State winning out is the worst case scenario for them. Say Oregon State loses to Oregon, then there will be an interesting decision. The only other option outside of Ohio State (presuming the Big 12 and SEC get 2 bids, which is a very safe presumption) might be Boise State and that would lead to a great debate because Boise State certainly would have a good case.

Re: Who gets the 10 BCS slots?
Should we have a minimum ranking for the auto bid conference champs? Does the Big East deserve a bid this year over say an undefeated Boise State? Should the champ from the auto bid conferences have to be in the BCS top 15 to get an auto spot?
Not trying to pick on the Big East here, they are just a good example this season.
Adel,
I think it is very possible that both Bama and Florida lose before the bowl games. No one thought PSU would lose to Iowa.

if mu wins, they wont have 2 teams from same conference, who didnt even win their conference in bcs title game. writers pushed lsu into title game over georgia, because they didnt make the conference title game. so bcs wont give 2 big12 teams who didnt make conference championship the title game

We will have to agree to disagree. I don't see the writers having any problem with either a Tech Texas or OU Texas rematch. Those were two of the best games so far this season.

The BCS championship game ought to never consider a rematch of two teams from the same conference.
Sin,
2006
If ever there has been an arguement for such it was then. Personally I was against a rematch even though it would have put UM in the title game. Without a playoff, I don't think two from the same conf. should ever meet in the mnc.

Yes, you are trying to pick on the Big East here and this season it has been warranted, but don't forget that the ACC is also teetering close to not have a team in the Top 15 in the BCS as well and their Champion was rated lower than the Big East in the 2005-2007 seasons.Left Seater wrote:Not trying to pick on the Big East here, they are just a good example this season.

Following up on adel's reply . . .Jsc810 wrote:Terry you seem to know more about the conference tie ins with the bowls, so let me ask you, is it possible for TCU to play Cal in a bowl game this year? What about LSU and Cal? tia
TCU-Cal: Could possibly matchup in either of two non-BCS bowls: Las Vegas or Poinsettia.
Las Vegas is a decent possibility. It becomes a better possibility (although not guaranteed) if: (a) Utah gets a BCS bid (MWC champ is contractually obligated to this game if not in the BCS); and (b) USC wins the Pac-10 (in which case, the Pac-10 definitely would not get an at-large BCS bid). The Las Vegas takes the fourth choice from the Pac-10, though, so Cal may have to stumble a bit down the stretch for this to happen.
Poinsettia is not very realistic this year, imho. I believe the Poinsettia gets either the sixth or seventh pick out of the Pac-10. There's a decent possibility that the Pac-10 won't have enough bowl-eligible teams to fill this commitment, and the Pac-10's slot in this bowl could go at-large as a result.
LSU-Cal: Given the current contractual bowl tie-ins (which do change somewhat over time), the only possibility of this matchup in a bowl game is either in a BCS bowl, or with one or both of these teams filling a bid which goes at-large due to a conference not having enough bowl-eligible teams to meet its obligation. A BCS bowl between these teams this year is pretty much out of the question. The latter possibility is also pretty much out of the question, given that both the Pac-10 and the Meatgrinder probably won't have enough bowl-eligible teams to meet all their obligations this year.

And I wouldn't blame you, but don't forget the game will be played at Arrowhead, essentially in Mizzou's back yard.
And don't forget also that if the weather is anything like it was last year in early Decemeber (ice storms and what not), that's another decided advantage for a cold weather team against the climate pussies from down south.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d be pulling hard for Mizzou to win that game to have two top 10 teams from the Big 12 South locked out of the BCS. But I don't see it happening.
Re: Who gets the 10 BCS slots?
Who would i like to see:
1. Tech MU has owned Tech in the past 3 meetings, beating the shit out of them last season, for some reason, they can slow harrell down, and crabtree was a non factor, he got some catches, but he was not a factor at all. chance of winning 75-80% Some teams just own other teams(see OU for MU)
2. Tejas MU came out like deer in headlights in Austin, chubby looked like the system QB i think he is, when things didnt go his way, he ran around like a chicken with its head cut off and threw the ball into triple coverage. If they face off in KC, it won't be nowhere near the same score. And pending the weather i could see MU pull the upset. chance of winning in 30-40% range
3. OU Stoops ownz Pinkel. Pretty much all i can say, chubby looks average vs Sooners, they sit on those forced throws, poor play callers in DC and ME, so MU doesn't have a shot. 0% chance God himself could play defense for MU and Chubby would still throw 4 picks and MU would lose by a FG.

Re: Who gets the 10 BCS slots?
Since the inception of the BCS, only two teams that qualified for BCS bids failed to make the Top 20 -- Pitt in '04, and Florida State in '05. Interestingly, we could have 2 more this year, although that's a bit of a longshot. The Pitt-Cincinnati winner figures to crack the Top 20 and would have the inside track on the Big East auto bid. In the ACC, Miami (#23) and Maryland (#25) have the inside track on the ACC championship game.Left Seater wrote:Mucho,

Some people here have claimed that the BCS rules favor ND. I've said that I would support a pure meritocracy rule for ND, i.e., ND qualifies for the BCS with a Top 10 finish, and doesn't qualify if they finish below #10, on one condition: the same rule applied to everybody. That is, no more automatic bids of any kind whatsoever. Something tells me the BCS conferences wouldn't be in any hurry to agree to such a rule.

A Rose Bowl rematch is exciting to the fans of Oregon State who will NOT be the road team and NOT be with an inexperienced Jaquizz Rogers in Pasadena. I'd imagine most Pac 10 fans would like to see Oregon State get another shot at Penn State since it doesnt look like Penn State is going to be going to Corvalis on a return tripMgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:Penn St deserves to play in the Rose Bowl but a rematch with Oregon St I don't think is exciting anybody.
