CB Steve Williams decommits from Oklahoma, favors Cal...

Rivals: 5.8 (4-star)
Scout: 4-star
ESPN: 82 (8th ranked CB in the nation)

Just found this on ESPN's college football recruiting page.

"Under Armour All-American cornerback Steve Williams has decommitted from the Sooners and could join California's Class of 2009, ESPN affiliate Web site OUInsider.com reports.

When asked if he was a solid pledge, Williams responded, "I don't want to lie to you guys, but I don't think so. I think I am going to go to California and I am going to decommit from Oklahoma."

He continued, "It is not really about Oklahoma it is just that I like California better. I just don't see myself as an Oklahoma Sooner as far as the system of playing cornerback. It is nothing against Oklahoma because it is a real good system, but I just want to play somewhere else."

Seems the OU fans are confused about this one,

see this thread:http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=146&f=2445&t=3387228

I'm guessing he's a straight A student.... and he's coming to Cal for academic reasons like most of the players here.

... this is kinda intriguing.

Do you, or any of the Texas guys know much about this special student athlete ?

I had some decent fish and chips for lunch at the local greasy spoon and cut out off work about 4:30 for an early happy hour with some of the guys from work and took advantage of 30 cent chicken wings at our favorite watering hole as well as $2 domestic drafts. Had a beer or three there before moving onto another place and threw some darts and split a couple pitchers of beer. Tried that new Leinenkugel nut brown...a very acquired taste, not a big fan. Also tried that American Ale...nothing to wrote home about either.

Went to U.S. Egg (a local breakfast spot here in the D&L) for breakfast this morning and had two eggs, ham, Idaho potatoes smothered in melted cheese and some protein pancakes. The protein pancakes have a deceptively healthy-sounding name, but really they're just whole wheat pancakes loaded with granola, blueberries and slivered almonds. They're fucking fantastic...

Doesn't ring a bell. There used to be a great sandwich shop on the corner opposite College Corner though. I forget what it was called (Planet Sub, maybe?), but they had the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had in my life - two eggs, sausage, bacon & cheese on a hoagie roll. It came with tomatoes too, but I left them off. I think the sandwich was called the Harlem. They also had a sandwich called the Gobbler, which had turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy and cranberry sauce. Either one of those with a side of gravy fries was the shit.

naw, Planet Sub was down the hill towards Bova's. It's called something else now, though it's the same. they lost their liquor license too many times. It used to be called Yellow Sub (Beatles) and was a place where you bought drugs.

what you are thinking of is Deli Zone. DZ is OK at best, but those gravy fries ARE good.

Yep. Deli Zone was it. Hasn't been there for a few years, at least. Do they have a different location somewhere else in Boulder?

The cheesesteaks at Salvaggio's were also pretty fantastic.

DZ has a location out on Iris, which is the orig. The guys who own DZ are pretty tight with the clowns who own the Fox with a Sink tie in. Salvaggio's has a Hill location these days.

the problem with Deli Zone is the bread is way undercooked and their Italian is about 90% ham which is BS for guys who claim to be the real deal from the east coast.

Word. I'm gonna have to stop in there next time I'm in Boulder. I only ate at the one on the Hill, and it's been a good 8-9 years, but I don't remember their bread as being undercooked at all. That Harlem sandwich always came on a French roll that was plenty crusty. Never tried the Italian.

There was also some Philly-style sandwich shop on (I think) 28th & Pearl that served pork roll, egg & cheese. I was pretty stoked to actually try one after Dean & Gene built an entire album around that sandwich. I can't say I was disappointed either...

now, if you are talking 8-9 years ago...Philly Junction was still at 28th and Canyon back then.

they had a good italian sub. and cheese fries with paprika.

Last night I cooked up some kale and rapini, threw in white beans and stock and garlic, and simmered the heck out of it. Then, I poured it over gnocchi, and ate it with parmesan bread. Even the kids - picky eaters - enjoyed it.

I stopped in mid-chew when I realized that Kal got a kid that the sooners might have wanted once.

Not really.

Williams committed to Cal, per Rivals

Williams has been a Cal fan for a while. It's always interesting when out of area players are interested in the program. Sometimes it's the colors, a style of play or a certain player. It never hurts when they visit the Bay Area and love it. Williams visited for the ASU game and was pretty much sold right away but just didn't want to leap too soon.

Sought-after DB Williams drops OU for Cal

Image

When updating our recent November class rankings, we thought No. 11 Oklahoma had an unwavering group of commitments with a strong focus on the back seven defensively. That assumption quickly changed a week ago when Under Armour All-American corner Steve Williams (Dallas/Skyline), the Sooners' highest-rated defensive back, reneged on his verbal pledge and subsequently opened up his recruitment.

Williams openly stated he was favoring Cal on Nov. 12. Exactly one week later, he informed ESPN that he was officially a Golden Bears commit.

Is 'Cal football ' turning into College Basketball's version of "Duke?"
While we are in an era when it's not so uncommon for highly rated prospects to make rash choices on the recruiting trail, it appears that the conscientious corner made a careful decision about his future as a collegiate athlete.

Williams has looked deeper than the two programs' current football profiles;
it's hard to compare a perennial contender on the hunt for a BCS title bid with another just looking to finish in the top half of the Pac-10. In the end for Williams, it came down to his perception that Cal boasted stronger academics
