Tebow is a good kid...I don't need announcers and talking heads to tell me that. I think they're so over the top with the praise of certain guys that some of the public begin to resent them and to me, that's not fair to them. I couldn't imagine what the media would've done back in the days of Jim Brown or Johnny Unitas or Muhammad Ali or Jesse Owens or Babe Ruth. The media coverage of exceptional athletes is part of the reason why I just like watching the games and I can do without SportsCenter and the panel shows. You don't need to tell me Tebow is a great player and great guy...just watch the games and form your own opinion. Too many people are on TV for the single purpose of telling you what they think. Just report what's going on and allow the people to decide what to think.

He was talking about how NBC's coverage of the Olympics was to tell more about the story behind the athletes as opposed to showing more events. They tried to appeal to people's feelings as opposed to just showing the games. Seems all the networks do this now.

The reason? They are trying to attract the dickless crowd. Men will watch no matter what, and just live with the shitty commentary. Many women, sans the touchy feel good stories, would be watching Oxygen and Lifetime movies where all the men beat thier wives while cheating on them and murdering their children.

That's a valid point...it's the times we are in. Sports on TV is as much about getting people to watch as it is about just broadcasting the events to those who want to watch it. I hate that it comes to that and there's so much fluff and fat to broadcasts but it's a tool for the networks to draw more people in. The regular sports fan is being alienated by the networks because they just assume we're dumb and we'll watch anything with sports. Why would the average fan watch the game last night? It was for the mythical national championship.

the other things about Ball Four that were "new" to the public were the wide-spread use of speed and other "pills" by players in games. and also the "inside" look at the financial stranglehold owners had on players and salaries before Marvin Miller and Curt Flood.

but, as you other guys have said, the first time i read Ball Four in high school i thought it was it the wildest, most raucous and irreverent thing thing ever. then, i re-read it a couple summers ago and it's pretty tame by today's standards.

i don't even own a telly and happen to hate tebow. the in-game narrative is more than enough. "spend a few minutes with him and you'll be a better person." oh? because he goes on missions and won't stfu about jesus? i have immediate friends who do much more impressive things, like provide maternal care in the bolivian mountains. the only impressive thing he does is throw a mediocre ball to one of two receivers, runs a bit faster than the other team's defensive ends, and benefits immensely from the seven other guys on offense who run sub-4.3 40s.

one thing really stuck to me about Tebow. It was his interview following the Ole Miss loss in which he said no one would work harder than himself. I found it odd that someone who pledged to work that hard could not even learn the play book and had it strapped to his wrist.

I feel bad because I'll be rooting against Tim Tebow when he begins his NFL career. I don't want him to be a star. I'm afraid that if he is, we could be looking at 15 more years of Favre-like worship in the press-box but even worse.
