Greg Robinson hired as new defensive coordinator at Michigan

He's had a poor history as a head coach but he's done well as a coordinator/assistant. I think RichRod and Magee will get the offense rounded into form eventually but the defense was going nowhere with Shafer. I like the hire...
Michigan men, thoughts?
Any news on who will be scheduled for the open date on October 17? I say bring back App State.

If Muschamp had chosen to leave Texas, Robinson was my first choice to be the DC at Texas. Most Texas fans think he was the 2nd best DC we've had during the Mack Brown era. (Muschamp being #1)

Ya dude sucked as a HC but some guys are meant to be HC's and some aren't. He's a good DC and he'll do a good job for Mich. While I did laugh about Mich having such a crap year, especially since it saved a Nebraska record for the timebeing, that program will get it rolling again.

Re: Greg Robinson hired as new defensive coordinator at Michigan
GR did a nice job in his one year at UT with a crap-ton of talent with the Derrick Johnson and Michael Huff's of the world. I saw GR's "glory years" as DC for the Broncos in the mid/late 90's up close and, while i'm not a Donkey fan, GR's formula for success has usually been a 2 TD lead (thanks Shanny) and a lot of talent (thanks Pat Bowlen, Mack)....other than that I'm not a fan of the guy and I don't think his record is all that great when the before mentioned two factors are not in place. As an NFL coordinator, it's pretty easy to look smart when you pin your ears back and blitz with a big lead when Team X has abandoned the run game. For all the success he was associated with, GR is not a bigtime memory among the Donk fans i know.
if i were a Maize and Blue kinda guy, i'd be in the "wait and see" holding pattern on Greg.

Shoot, Trgovac could've left a week earlier and maybe he would've been a candidate for this gig.

because it's so obvious any def. coord connected to michigan would leave the nfl for $300,000 and second fiddle to dickrod.
i'm comfortable with the hire, if only because it seemed like a thorough search done by an intelligent man and that a side effect of last year was an entire checklist of things not to do.

Don't get me, I like it too. His work with Texas and the Broncos speaks for itself. He's an outsider but he's got great credentials. Starting with bringing in RichRod, the premium on "Michigan men" isn't a priority and it should be about getting the right guys for the job. I hope he's able to better utilize the defensive talent they traditionally have.

Ya, I think if he was interested he'd had have bolted while Mich's DC job was still open and got himself an interview.M Club wrote:because it's so obvious any def. coord connected to michigan would leave the nfl for $300,000 and second fiddle to dickrod.

Re: Greg Robinson hired as new defensive coordinator at Michigan
Before Toomey and Robinson came in, Texas had a real toughness problem, those two along with McWhorter turned the Texas program around and since then Texas has truly become an elite program. Even though Texas lost to Oklahoma their only year at Texas they set the ground work for the last 4 years and IMO made Texas the 2k5 champs by helping the players bring out the best in themselves. People like to point to Vince, but since 2k4 our oline has been dominate and our defensive front 7 has not had the problem of running out of gas in the 4th like they did before 2k4.King Crimson wrote:GR did a nice job in his one year at UT with a crap-ton of talent with the Derrick Johnson and Michael Huff's of the world. i agree that 05 UT is not given near enough credit on D in the "it was all Vince" angle people take. there were killers on the 04 and 05 D, many in the nfl. who's Toomey? Do you mean Duane Akina who was at Arizona with Dick Tomey in the so-called "Desert Storm" years? dumping Bull Reece was a good move for Mack.Vito Corleone wrote:Before Toomey and Robinson came in, Texas had a real toughness problem, those two along with McWhorter turned the Texas program around and since then Texas has truly become an elite program. G-Rob = Bad coach. Great hire for the Big-10!
Re: Greg Robinson hired as new defensive coordinator at Michigan
i forgot about your skill at evaluating coaches: anyone who wins 90% of their games isn't very good while ferentz migrates between the best coach in the country and the ABSOLUTE FUCKING BEST COACH EVER!!! depending on whether or not iowa's 6-6 or 8-4. i'm pretty sure michigan will go on beating iowa at an 80% clip.TheJON wrote:You're comfortable with Pete Carroll?

You're right. Greg Robinson's been a miserable failure just about everywhere he's been. But go ahead and think you've got a great hire!
You're arguing with a Chiefs fan about how bad his fucking defenses suck balls??? I got some old VCR tapes I could send you if you'd like.

When you argue, could you at least maybe know what the hell you're talking about before arguing? How many times do I have to state, I think Ferentz is a good coach but he's not as great as some Iowa fans think??? Said it on here 88,985.2 times. I like Kirk, and I've always said if he ever leaves I will hardly care. I do not whack off to the guy like many Hawkeye fans do. So I'm not really sure why you would even make that statement.ferentz migrates between the best coach in the country and the ABSOLUTE FUCKING BEST COACH EVER!!!

Re: Greg Robinson hired as new defensive coordinator at Michigan
For the record, Pete Carroll had an overall winning record in two stints as an NFL head coach and he went to the playoffs twice in four seasons.
He won the AFC East, and a playoff game.
Lotta Jets and Patriots coaches down through the years can't say the same. By no means was Pete a failure as an NFL head coach. With an above .500 career record and multiple playoffs appearances in just four seasons at the helm he was in fact an above average head coach in the NFL.
But yeah, he's been a bit better at the college level. Turned out to be a good move, that.

No, I mean Dick Tomey who was also at Texas the same time Robinson was. At the end of the year Tomey took the SJSU job (i think) and Robinson took the Syracuse job. Tomey coached the DE and Robinson the linebackers. Robinson tends to get most of the credit for how good the defense was in 2k4 but that is probably more do to being Derrick Johnson's position coach.King Crimson wrote:i agree that 05 UT is not given near enough credit on D in the "it was all Vince" angle people take. there were killers on the 04 and 05 D, many in the nfl. who's Toomey? Like I said, if Muschamp would have walked I think Robinson would have come back to Texas. He did a damn good job for us. Bull Reese did a good job at getting Texas a faster defense that was good at swarming to the ball, but he had no clue how to stop the spread offense and required no accountability for missed assignments. It is this last reason that I think Texas got the reputation as a soft program. When Tomey, Robinson, and McWhorter came in they changed everything, 1's were competing against 1's, the fat lumbering linemen were replaced by smaller quicker guys like Lyle Sendlin and Kasey Studdard, but the biggest change was taking away the conditioning responsibility from Maddog and giving it to Tomey and Robinson. Like I said, after they got it, you haven't seen the Texas defense run out of gas like they did in the past.
