His self imposed contact negotiations came and went at 5 PM. Word is Tech wants to move on...unreal!
Heard a Texas Tech know it all say a less than 0% chance he survives Friday's lynching. Way to know yourself Taco boys..

Minus Leach, Tech is making a big play for the Big XII South cellar in both revenue sports.

This shit had to happen after signing day. We could've capitalized on this and gotten at-least one good recruit.
Sucks to be Baylor-fan if Briles jumps-ship. They were just looking like a program with potential.

Re: Mike Leach Gone!?
that remains to be seen. since, in part, it comes from Hal Mumme's O at Kentucky that Stoops said, when he was DC at UF, gave everybody fits. which is part of why Stoops chose Leach as his first OC--thought his first choice was rumored to be Kevin Rogers from Syracuse (McNabb years) but who took a job at ND and Bob Davie. anyway, outfit Leach's O with real talent on both sides of the ball....you never know.Sudden Sam wrote:You know damn well his offense would've sucked in the SEC.Papa Willie wrote:Oh - so NOW he leaves them. I don't see how the "suck in the SEC" angle applies to Leach and not Malzahn?

So if I read it right, taco tceh wants to be able to extend his contract but int he process increase the buyout should he leave, restrict him from talking to anyone else without permission and loweing the amount they have to pay him should he be fired.
Oh yeah...great season and get all these shit clauses in a new deal? With what he's brought to that shit school and program, he should get to sign his own checks. Without him, they go back to crap.

Re: Mike Leach Gone!?
Sam,
As much as I can't stand Leach as a person, he's a hell of a football coach. He has to stand in line behind t.u., OU, A&M, LSU and other major programs to get Texas talent. And with that tier 3 talent, he still wins games. Give him real talent, as has been said before in this thread, and he can be scary. I would even venture to say he could be Urban Meyer scary.
And let me reamphasize how much I hate that douchebag...but I gotta say I think ANY major program would give him a long look and see his potential with better talent. He will not take a "lower echelon" job. Not as his next one at least.

Re: Mike Leach Gone!?
as someone who has worked for 2 universities you can't believe ANYTHING they publish about themselves....without exception, it's the most shameless rah rah PR around. they don't even care if shit is true or not. baseless sports hyperbole is child's play.Sudden Sam wrote:From TT's site: Arguably one of the most innovative coaches in the country, Mike Leach has not only transformed Texas Tech Football, but also the face of college football with an all-out aerial assault.
outside the hyperbole angle, Colorado publishes (and broadcasts on their commercials at halftime of whatever game you are watching) that "CU ranks #11 of public universities in the world". OK, that ranking comes from a poll done to rate international graduate student experiences.....it's not AT ALL a comprehensive ranking of the university. sorry, off topic here.
to be honest, i stopped following the Leach story a couple days ago....just see what plays out. but, this sounds like an ugly episode for Taco fan (is Spike Dykes still alive? His son coaches somewhere doesn't he?--OC or something).

Re: Mike Leach Gone!?
Leach needs to take his system to a Big East school where he'll actually have a chance to play in BCS bowls. No big, bad Texas and OU to hold him back there.
Re: Mike Leach Gone!?
Leach would be an interesting fit in the Pac 10. I'd like to see what he could manage with Oregon's financial support. Seeing him at Cal might work too.
Not that either of those two places are looking for a new coach, mind you.
Washington St would be too large of a step down but that's the kind of a place where his gimicky offense would work. They're not going to get by on talent so they could use Leach.
I wouldn't really want the guy coaching my team though, not unless I was a Washington St type program. His gimicky offense will be good to bring a program out of the doldrums but he'll only get you so far. I'm just not a big fan of coaches who don't give a rip about defense.
Yeah, he could take that offense to the SEC. If he took it to Mississippi St he'd soon have them doing much better than they've been doing with their stone age offenses but the problem occurs every time he has to kick off. With the exception of Florida the SEC's offenses aren't as good as the Big XII's but still his defenses will get punched in the mouth.
Until he begins to stress defense as much as offense he'll never be more than a flashy opponent. He'll never win championships.
Yeah, he's the right guy for a Washington St or a mid level team in any conference. He'll put you on the map but that's it. For a lot of places though that's enough, and more than they can expect with who they have now.

Re: Mike Leach Gone!?
Defense doesn't win championships but a lack of defense definitely prevents championships.
Championships require balance. You're not going to win a championship without the ability to exert your will on the opponent on both sides of the ball and that's true whether its football, baseball, basketball or most any sport. It may not be in equal measures but each side of the ball does have to be able to do it effectively, when necessary.
Mike Leach teams don't have balance. Mike Martz teams don't have balance. Don Nelson teams don't have balance. It's always a lack of defense.
Many an Auburn team has had good to great defense and a severe shortage of offense. No balance...no championships.

Not a shabby backfield, true, but that Auburn offense sure didn't do jack once they faced a good defense...

They did though in '03, and they got...shut the fuck out!

Leach is just a stubborn arrogant fuck. He may "give in" eventually, but he's going to make sure that the general public thinks he "won".

Texas Tech, Mike Leach finally agree to contract extension

Texas Tech and football coach Mike Leach have finally agreed to a contract extension after more than 10 months of negotiations that will keep him at the school through 2013, a source with knowledge of the talks told The Dallas Morning News on Thursday.
Leach met with Tech chancellor Kent Hance for almost three hours early Thursday afternoon and the two sides have agreed to Tech's $12.7 million offer that will extend Leach's current two-year deal three more seasons. The contract hasn't been signed but that could take place as early as Friday, the source said.
Tech athletic director Gerald Myers and Leach's IMG agents, Gary O'Hagan and Matt Baldwin, didn't attend the meeting between only Leach and Hance, the source said. Leach and Hance could not immediately be reached for comment.
Leach and Hance hashed out the sticking points earlier today involving four clauses that Tech inserted into its latest offer Jan. 9 that wrecked previous progress. The four clauses involved the guaranteed termination compensation Leach would receive if fired, the buyout amount he would pay if he left early, a penalty for interviewing for another job without permission and who controlled Leach's personal property rights.
A news conference has been called for 6 p.m. today.
The two sides agreed to take out the buyout in the contract altogether, the source said. Tech had wanted a $1.5 million buyout, but now Leach will become the fifth Big 12 football head coach without a buyout in his contract.
The two sides agreed to raise Leach's guaranteed money to $2 million, the source said. Tech had offered $1.5 million in its latest offer. Both parties agreed that Leach is to give notification if he is to interview for another job, the source said, but doesn't need Myers' permission, as Tech had originally asked. Both sides agreed to meet in the middle on Leach's personal property rights, the source said.
The convoluted and sometimes heated contract negotiations first became public after The Dallas Morning News filed an open records request in mid-January asking for documents involving talks between the two parties. On Wednesday, the drama played out nationally as Leach talked to everyone from ESPN to a local radio station.
Tech had set a Tuesday deadline for Leach to agree to its terms, but no deal was signed. A few hours before Tuesday's 5 p.m. deadline, Tech's Board of Regents called a "special teleconference meeting" for Friday in which regents were to discuss Leach's contract status and future with the school. Earlier Tuesday, about 40 people showed up outside the football offices for a rally on Leach's behalf.
On Wednesday, Leach formally requested that the regents meeting be open and for him to have the chance to speak. But that won't be necessary after an almost yearlong standoff has ended with Leach able to keep his job following a 2008 season in which he led the Red Raiders to one of the best seasons in school history.
Leach, who just completed his ninth season, is seven wins shy of becoming the school's all-time winningest football coach.

Re: Mike Leach Gone!?
No real program would hire this tool. He's not a good coach. In fact he's a BAD coach. Spare me the "11-2 or 600 straight bowl games, beat Tejas....." Whatever. He doesn't stress defense, he runs a gimmick offense because he doesn't know how to draw up real X's and O's, and he's a fucking pussy. There are Texas high schools that play a tougher OOC than he does. Bill Snyder thinks his scheduling is lame. He has maybe 2-3 good wins his whole career at Taco Tech. There's a reason he only gets to look at other jobs and doesn't actually land them........because no decent program is dumb enough to hire this bum. He should consider himself lucky he found himself the only gig in America that would allow him to be successful.
I wouldn't hire Leach to coach my local high school team.....
