JULY 2-4 UPDATE:
Tom Cruise may have bagged Katie Holmes, and have the #1 movie,
but it wasn't enough to stop Hollywood's box office slump, now at 19 weeks.
The alien-invasion movie took in $77.6 million over the holiday weekend,
making it the second-best opening over the Fourth of July weekend
behind $115.8 million for "Spider-Man 2".
The weekend's other wide release, the Martin Lawrence comedy "Rebound",
fouled out with just $6 million from Friday to Monday, coming in at No. 7.
TOP 5:
1. "War Of The Worlds", $77.6 million (Cumulative Gross $113.2 million since opening last Wednesday).
2. "Batman Begins", $18.7 mil (CG $154.1 mil, 3 weeks).
3. "Mr. & Mrs. Smith", $12.7 mil (CG $146 mil, 4 weeks).
4. "Bewitched", $10.8 mil (CG $40.3 mil, 2 weeks).
5. "Herbie: Fully Loaded", $10.5 mil (CG $36.8 mil, 2 weeks).
Next up on the "Silver Screen Slumpbuster Sweepstakes": "The Fantastic Four".
At the store Monday, I saw that the new TV Guide has one of those multiple-cover deals
with "F. F." characters on it.
Strangely enough, I didn't see any with Jessica Alba as 'The Invisible Girl' on it!
