Bryce Brown and Orson Charles

Post by Van »

Anybody know what's going on with those two? Is there a deadline for signing these guys and, if so, what is it?

I really doubt USC lands Brown and I'm not expecting Charles either but for the sake of argument what would adding Rivals' #1 player (the #1 RB in the class, even above Trent Richardson) along with adding Charles do to everyone's class rankings?

With USC having added no RBs in last year's class (basically standing pat on McKnight, Johnson, Gable, etc) a guy like Brown would be situated pretty well should he choose to come to USC. He's scheduled for an official visit soon here so maybe it's not entirely out of the question...

Someone on this board (I can't recall who) said something to the effect that USC would be better off without this guy, or this guy's family...something like that.

What was that all about?

I have heard Brown has a handler, not unlike Uncle Kim that was handling Emannuel Moody. I think Brown is more of an Oregon lean than a USC lean.
Charles is more of a goal for the Trojans, USC was out of the TE recruiting when they had the Morrell Presley verbal last summer but after he was talked in to changing his mind and playing for the powdered blue, USC jumpes back in and went after Charles. Says a lot about Orson that he would consider the Trojans when they were jumping in his recruitment so late in to the game. He is in LA this weekend and Im sure that all of the Trojan fans are handing him blank checks, I just drew a 4 on mine and told him to add all the zeros he wanted, also gave him the keys to my wifes Cayenne since she seems happier driving the RX 350 instead.
Charles is also from the same high school as Keith Rivers so I'm sure keith is showing him around and doing all he can to talk the kid in to not staying in Fla and playing for CUM

I've heard Bryce Brown may have shit canned his "handler", Brian Butler.
Butler played the line he might forgo his college carreer to enter the CFL draft. I think this pissed off his family.
His main mentor is Lawrence Pete, who was a D-Tackle at Nebraska and his uncle. As of right now he's living with Pete in Omaha. Word is he's looking for guidance from him rather than Butler.
I believe he's visitng Tennesseee this weekend.

The rumor mill has Brown saying some crap like "Every starting RB from Oregon ends up in the NFL."

That's rumor... reality dictates that Oregon is the teaser name that top recruits throw around to draw attention to themselves before they sign with one of the big daddies (sup Tahj Boyd, Terrell Pryor, and countless others).

Although I can see where a top RB would seriously consider Oregon -- they run run run, and then they run some more, and Runnin' Chip Kelley isn't going anywhere any time soon. Rueben Droughns, Maurice Morris, Onterrio Wizzinator, and Jonathan Stewart have parlayed their "college education" into a nice professional salary, and JJ is soon to follow. Ain't a bad track record for producing NFL RBs.

Then again...

Oregon's #1 RB graduated, and the 2nd stringer who got 1000 yards also has been given the boot (although I don't know if it's permanent), so the opportunity is there to beat out the other guys for the starting spotas a freshman, which would be attractive to a recruit, considering the huge numbers Oregon RBs consistantly put up...

So it's not out of the question.

Reading some Duck stuff, apparently, Butler is still trying to call the shots.

This guy is really getting some bad advice.

Rumor has it (the stuff of which February in CFB is made of), Randy Shannon is about ready to tell Brown/Butler to fuck himself.

Sounds like Oregon isn't too far away from that, either... but it seems like Oregon might even be where he's headed.

Either Butler is the worst handler ever, or Brown has a personality disorder.

As much as I like seeing players of that caliber come to Eugene, at what cost will this come? I just have a strange feeling that wherever dude ends up, NCAA investigations are sure to follow. And with Myles Brand having one foot in the grave these days, Oregon probably isn't going to be getting the free pass on improprieties that they've become used to (same for Indiana hoops).

Mad talent, complete pain in the ass this kid is.

It's what God told him to do. Can't wait for Kiffin's reaction.

Memo to 'Spray...

I hate to say I told you so, but see, this is precisely why I told you Tennessee brought in Lane Kiffin, and this is precisely why Vols Nation doesn't give a sandy fuck about whatever ill advised comments he made during pre season suck fest press conferences.

Kiffin was hired to bring Tennessee back...through recruiting. That is what Kiffin does, and that is what Ed Orgeron does, better than most people in America. Snagging Nick Saban's head recruiter, same deal.

Recruiting. It's what separates Pete Carrol and Urban Meyer from plenty of other equally good Xs & Os coaches. It's what builds programs which aspire to be more than mere one year wonders.

Tennessee, of all people, they just landed themselves the #1 back in the country and the #1 player overall, at least according to Rivals. This, on top of some other major unexpected "gets" they landed.

Bryce Brown may turn out to be a bust. There's no guarantees #1 recruits will turn out to be major stars. See Colorado's top freshman recuit as evidence.

Nonetheless, consider this Tennessee's official warning shot across the bow of the SEC. With Kiffin and his all star staff of recruiters in place Tennessee is going to get after it, hard...

Personally I would like to see if he can coach first. Parity in the SEC will destroy good recruiting if you can't coach. Hell, Bobby couldn't even wing it in the ACC...superior talent+bad coaching=poor seasons.

Not saying the guy can't coach or wont be great for the program, but I do believe coaching is more important than recruiting.

I wouldn't either, but I certainly wouldn't consider him the top difference maker of the 2008 recuiting class, even though he was the #1 rated prospect.

His freshman year was supposed to go like AD's at OU, and he barely was even a blip on the radar.

Just sayin' that could be Bryce Brown too, despite all the hype.
