... for hitting paydirt on pirate scumbags and freeing Captain Phillips unharmed. Seems they took out 3 of them simultaeneously with head shots from about 200 yards and the 4th surrendered. Teach those Somali pieces of shit for trying to hi-jack an American flagged ship.

Yes, I know there are two other threads up about this, but since shit trolls are ruining those threads, I decided to start another and give credit where it's deserved.

When this whole thing 1st happened I assumed a SEAL squad would be helo'd in close at night and dropped off to swim in and take over the life boat. It had to be approved by the token CIC for them to take action 5 days later??? WTF? 5 days later?

AP, you forget this was a hostage situation where U.S. assets had to travel to get into position. We deployed and evaluated the situation. As with any HN we slow things down, gain containment and when talk is not enough we pull the trigger.

First, I didn't forget anything. Secondly, SEAL operators are assigned to Navy ships all over the world in high threat areas. They are trained for hostage situations and are deployed on ships that have these things called "helicopters." Really and seriously... I'm not trolling here.

I also thought it was about time, but then realized these pirates have been holding some hostages for months, so five days doesn't really seem that long. Bottom line is that all's well that ends well.

Don't make this about Obama. He can take or get credit for not fucking it up or just staying out the way. I don't care what his role was and neither does the ship captains family.

Anyway, the SEAL team should have been on it as it happened. It seems command decision makers are obligated to micromanagement from the CIC through the Pentagon. I knew this would happen.

But was it ? I don't know. I'm going to be optimistic on this one and suggest Bobby42's initial take was spot on - including a lot of behind the scenes shit going on. Consider a Frenchman was killed in a similiar situation where the French went "all in", just recently.

I'm leaning towards a strategic delay, measured response, and overall successful mission.

mvscal did mention that initially some hostages would die, but he didn't suggest that we kill them.

What he did suggest is that the way to prevent piracy (of the seas, not the type practiced on weekends by m2) is by removing the kidnapper's incentive. Don't negotiate, don't offer them anything whatsoever, other than certain death, and the kidnappers will quickly learn that kidnapping doesn't pay. If it doesn't pay, they won't continue to do it.

They're in this for profit, not idealogy. Take away their potential for profit and they'll move on to something with profit potential.

Had that been our policy all along, this past week's kidnapping doesn't happen.

The vast majority of this "piracy" we see is simply kidnapping; kidnapping for profit. So far, it's working. People are paying, so the kidnappings continue.

If nobody ever paid...game over.
