You said it, James, Bey could have been had by trading down.

They not only passed on Crabtree and Maclin in favor of Bey, but they passed on at least 6 or 8 guys who I would have prefered for them to take rather than Bey ... notably Raji and Monroe.

Bey never had a REALLY good college season.

As I see it, it's very much a HOPE pick.

Oh well, maybe he'll pan out, but as I view it right now, it was a poor choice.

Won't do much to silence the "Al is in love with fast guys" chorus of mockery.

I thought Miami taking Ted Ginn, Jr over Brady Quinn was pretty bad, but Bey at #7 might be the single worst draft pick I've ever seen...

Bey at #7 cannot be justified, not on any level. The Raiders now have to sink high first round draft pick $$ into a situational at best gimick receiver.

How much better would it be if they were at least spending that kind of $$ on a Brian Orakpo, or a Michael Crabtree...or an offensive lineman who might actually allow the Raiders to build a passing game?

This is literally insane.

For what it's worth, Bey sounds like a good kid.
Hard worker, good head on his shoulders ... apparently.

I have no problem with "us" drafting him, I just think that if he's the guy you think is YOUR guy, a trade down to land him would have made a helluva lot more sense.

Nobody honestly had him on their radar as a top 10 pick.
Consensus view of him is that he was a late first round pick for somebody.

Are Crabtree and Maclin going to be better pros than Bey?

Nobody knows for sure.

Wait a few years and we'll know.

pop, of course nobody knows for sure, but we do know this isn't how you conduct a draft. You don't take an unproductive, drops prone non entity who's no better than the fifth ranked prospect at WR, not with the 7th pick. You go with one of the more highly regarded and far more productive WRs, if you're set on a WR. You're going to have to pay 7th pick money, so you at least need to draft someone who's a 7th pick value.

Or, like you said, you trade down.

I'm just stunned that someone in the Raider room didn't say, "People, wait. Does anybody here realize who we're passing on, to take this guy? Does anybody here realize that we could get just as easily get this guy in the second round?"

Pops, im actually pretty damn happy with our second round pick (especially since Chicago was going to pick him at 49 and ended up trading becuase we snagged him)

On the surface, the Mitchell pick looks to be a reach, too.

That's just based on him being rated a lot lower than a number of other safeties.

But Mitchell's stock rose of late and yeah, he was seen as a hot commodity by other teams.

Oakland is lacking at safety, so they jumped in and took him.

A lot of people seem to think he's one of the real "sleepers" in the draft, I dunno.

Scouting report says he is fast and he's a big hitter.
Yeah, I've seen some clips.
He packs a serious load.

Scouting report also shows he really can't cover worth a shit.

Hmmmm ...

Am I the only person to notice how much genuine respect Chucky has for Al Davis and our organization? He praises The Nation every chance he's had on NFL Network. The other hosts are clearly irritated by it. Its hilarious and epic watching him being the median that justifies our picks-the other hosts bash us, and immediately after Gruden comments and renders what they said pointless. They know that they can't comment back because he was in house for so many years with us and is one of the very few who truly knows how we operate. Gruden being a top tier coach that loved working for Al and loves the organization and The Nation seems to rub people wrong. Gruden looked straight at Mayock and said "The Raiders are global and Al wants to win. He doesn't care what you think"

Mayock just looked down at his desk immediately.

Prior to the draft I had never seen him in an interview.
Watching him now, he is REALLY a kid you want to pull for.
Seems like a genuinely good and humble guy.
Someone who just wants to work and do the right things.

The "bad guy" Raiders have brought in a lot of good character people in recent times.

I watched an ESPN segment on the DHB pick.

McShay, Kolber, Cris Carter, Dilfer and Tom Jackson laffed at and mocked the pick.
Then they had an interview with Bey, and as he answered a question from Kolber, you could hear the boys giggling and yukking in the background.

I seriously couldn't believe the lack of professionalism there.

WTF?

Mock Al, fine.
Mock the Raiders.
Mock the pick if you think that's your job.

But DON'T mock the kid as he's doing an interview on probably the biggest day of his life to this point.

I can see those guys mocking Al for making the pick, but these guys did not mock the kid. No way.

Believe what you want, but there's no precedent for it. In twenty however many years he's been at ESPN Tom Jackson has never mocked college kids, live, on air, while they were being interviewed. I highly doubt he's done so, at all, even when they weren't being interviewed.

Todd McShay? That guy's every bit as P.C. and nice as Kirk Herbstreit. He's not going to make fun of college kids, on air.

Cris Carter and Trent Dilfer are like a couple of school boys trippin' on acid for the first time.

Jackson is happy to pile on with a few yuks and comments of his own.

McShay and Kolber are ok, really.
Kolber doesn't say much.
McShay questions the pick.

But listen around the 3:35 point, when Kolber asks Bey what knowledge he about the Raiders.

You can hear giggles in the background and Kolber speaks as if holding back some laughter.

The whole set-up was a joke.

You're going to blast the pick and the kid ... and then bring him on for an interview and laff in the background as he answers a question?

Yes, nice.

Okay, pop, I just watched that entire clip, twice.

Much ado about nothing. Just as I suspected, it wasn't anything even remotely close to what you said. At no point did anybody mock the kid during his interview. There was one giggle, off camera, from Jackson (it sounded like) but it was in response to Kolber's question about the Raiders. It wasn't mocking the kid.

In fact, Tom Jackson didn't mock him, at all. All he said was Al won.

Suzy Kolber said nothing bad, at all. Trent Dilfer didn't mock him. Jesse Palmer didn't mock him. All he said was the kid was very unproductive, in part due to his poor hands.

Nearly the entire clip was Cris Carter, ragging on the kid's lack of production, and hands. It was Cris Carter, talking about how track isn't football, and how track guys don't make for good football players. It was Cris Carter, being a draft analyst, expressing his shock at the Raider's pick, and giving reasons for his reaction. It was Cris Carter, doing his job.

He never mocked the kid. He only said the other WRs are more NFL ready, because they've been much more productive, and they have better hands. That's what Carter is being paid to do there.

When the kid was being interviewed nobody mocked him. Actually, nobody mocked him, period. Carter and Jackson mocked the Raiders, and that was it.

They're hardly alone in doing so, and the Raiders deserve every last bit of mocking they receive for this one.

And then they brought the guy who they just buttfucked on so that they could "speak" with him. LOL

... and more giggling was heard in the background.
