1. California: The joke around the Old Blues is that many have an overdue date with St. Peter, but refuse to leave Earth until Cal gets to a Rose Bowl. You’ve got to love a fan base that would rather play in the Rose Bowl, where the Bears haven’t been since 1959, than the BCS Championship game. Jeff Tedford said as much a month ago at Pac-10 media day. That’s crazy, but it’s sort of heart-warming, too. Then there’s the quirkiness of Memorial Stadium, which includes Tight Wad Hill and a remodel delayed in part to tree huggers. The school is testing the passion of Bear fans by asking some to pay as much as $225,000 for a seat in the renovated stadium. As a personal aside, I’m particularly impressed by the intelligence of Bear football fans.

3. Oregon: You’re No. 3 Duck fans, but I’m not happy about it. Oregon fans travel well in bowl games, and they do show up for games, so I’ll give them that. But in a survey of just about every person I know, Duck fans are the most annoying, entitled fans in the Pac-10. It’s really not close. I hate to lump all Oregon fans into one group, because some of them get it,





4. USC: There is a huge sense of entitlement among USC fans. If the Trojans are going good, as they are now, they support the heck out of the football team. But when things aren’t going so well – see the Paul Hackett years, when 55-60K crowds were the norm – USC fans would just as soon spend a Saturday afternoon at the beach. If the Trojans ever drop down as low as something like the Sun Bowl, you’ll be able to transport all of the fans to El Paso in a school bus.

I'm heading to KC for the Royals game tomorrow. Probably down a few Boulevard's and eat their new Buffalo chicken bites and fries they have at The K. They have some excellent buffalo sauce. I love spicy food and their sauce is extra spicy.

Fat Tire is some very good beer. We just got Fat Tire here in Iowa maybe a year and a half ago. I was hooked on that stuff when I lived in Montana back in 2002 but didn't ever drink it again until we got it here. For whatever reason, I always forget we have it and rarely order/buy it. I am going to have to make a point to drink more Fat Tire because it is one of my favorite beers.

FeCal avgd 61,632 fans in a 9 win season in 2008, 85.6% of the stadiums capacity. in 2007 they avgd 63,136, 87.6% of the stadiums capacity, but the Tennessee and USC games both brought more than the 72,000 fans Memorial Stadium reportedly holds.
FeCal also has over 25,000 undergrad students
USC has been at 94 and 95% capacity of a 92,000 seat stadium the last 2 seasons with an undergrad student body of 16,000 students.
Ill admit that when "he whose name we dont say" was still coaching USC, my family didnt use our season seats, we had better things to do than watch that boob ruin the program. We still bought season seats just didnt go to the games. The last few years I have been given tickets to basketball games through Cardinal and Gold and we haven't gone to any of those games either. Im not going to drive 90 minutes north of here to watch something I dont enjoy, makes me a bad booster of my schools program, oh well.

Where in Montana did you live? I have family that live in Boezman and I absolutely love it there. Fat Tire is great, but it's changed a little bit since they decided to mass produce it. Doesn't taste the same, but still very good. Who knows, if it was sold here in Michigan, it might just become another of the beers I rotate on a weekly basis. I'm waiting for all of the fall beers to come out. Brooklyn's Pumpkin Ale and Arcadia's Jawjacker Ale are two of my favorites, regardless of the season.

fat tire isn't as good as it used to be...and i've been drinking it for 15 years (i think it's solid, not great in the local brew scene). it's never been "my beer" but it's on tap everywhere around here. in fact, i avoid buying it these days since you are buying the name and the extra 1.50 per 6 that comes with it. i think of the Colorado beers, Avery and Flying Dog make a much better set of beers right now, today.

I'm fine with it when your team is going no where and you want the administration to make changes. It's a double edged sword. Yes, you want to support your team but on the flip side, if you shell out money for an inferior product then you are green lighting the powers that be to keep things the way they are because your numbers are still in the black.

People were all for Davie when he started, but by the time 2001 rolled around and he started the year 0-3 with blow out losses to Nebraska and Texas A&M, people were fed up and wanted a change so they stopped coming to the games. I remember hearing from my buddy who was an ND student at the time that you could literally walk up and buy Navy tickets 10 minutes before the game started for $5. When Willingham started, you couldn't get a ticket. After 2003, people were less enthused but were ready for 2004. After the BYU debacle, and later the punt from the 30 BC abortion, people stopped coming. There was even a movement to fax the AD a letter stating why you wouldn't be attending games or buying merchandise.

Now, people are obviously on the fence about Weis. What doesn't help is the shitty schedule. So the people who would typically spend the money and fly in for the weekend to see friends and go to the games decide not to shell out that money and stay home and support the team. Call it bandwaggon if you want, but I think it's the only way to get your voice heard. For 12 Saturdays each fall, you can't get me away from the TV for 4 hours that day. I'll buy beer, watch the game and scream at my TV. But if the ND administration wants to continue to spit in the face of fans by putting a sub-par product on the field and by playing shitty teams, they aren't getting a dime of my money.

I don't think anyone on here can call me bandwaggon, but if that makes me a bandwaggon fan in some eyes, so be it.

Anyone who actually has season tickets, got them a loooooong time ago (likely a generation or two ago) and if they don't re-up for them, they will lose them forever. There is no waiting list because ND will not sell season ticket packages any longer. They opened up a section of the stadium for people to purchase them and they were gone before you could blink. They did that for reasons to let real fans yell and holler, and to keep them away from the wine and cheese crowd. That's an entirely different argument.

Typically the people that have season tickets that don't go, give the tickets to family members or local charities to be auctioned off. As soon as ND is good again, they will take their tickets. Yes, that is bandwaggon. But usually the ones who have the season tickets are also big money Sorin Society or other alumni contributors. And typically when ND stuggles, those donations go way down.

Many people can leave home Saturday morning and still get to the game a few hours ahead of kickoff, have time to catch up with old friends, and still get home before the kids are in bed. That's not the case for me. I live about 500 miles away from ND, so if I were to drive to a ND game, it would become a weekend-long event. In that case, I'd be leaving my wife home alone for the entire weekend with a pre-schooler and a special-needs child, plus, on occasion, her infant granddaughter. Throw in the fact that my son is now into youth football, and I'd be missing his game as well if I went to a game before November. The combinatino of being old married guy with a young family, plus living so far away from campus, makes it difficult if not impossible to get back for the games.

I suppose I could fly, but the South Bend airport is tiny. Most people who fly in for games fly to Chicago then catch the bus/train or rent a car to ND. That makes for extra hassles.

Throw in the fact that one of the perks of being ND fan is that virtually all of your team's games are televised either nationally or over a significant region of the country, so it's extremely rare that I can't see a ND game on TV (I think the last time I couldn't see a game on TV was the Air Force game in '06).

I can't miss my kid's youth football games. His season ends October 24. The Navy game is the day after my birthday, and I'm pretty sure my wife wouldn't appreciate me being out of town, alone, on my birthday. I'm gonna try to swing a trip for the UConn game on November 21.
