Is there a bigger lock of the year than UF over Tenn?

Post by Killian »

After all the shit Lane has been saying, I can see Urban taking a page from SOS and throwing when they are up 50. If I was a betting man, I'd put everything I had on UF.

No he is not. You know he'd love to do it. But he's also smart enough (barely) to know it would be the end of his coaching career if that happened. It would be too obvious.

Or maybe this is what Vegas wants you to think.........

There's no such thing as free money in sports betting. There are bets the oddsmakers want you to think are free money. It's the fools that think there's a free money bet that end up losing their ass.

You would think this is a lock with all of the bulletin board material Kiffin has given the Gators for this game, but you should be leery of Tennessee players knowing what's at stake as well.

I seriously think the line will continue to increase with everyone going heavy with Florida, but I think Tennessee gives Florida a very physical game.

But what the fuck do I know. I'm 8-12 this year in the CFB pick'em.

Spurrier, in turn, took a page from Jimmy Johnson. Jimmah's Big Boy was terrorizing college football opponents back when Spurrier was still coaching at the basketball school in Durham, NC.

CU will be wearing throwbacks from the 30's or 40's. the potential for bad, tragicomedy is there. you can't lose to teams you schedule for throwbacks.

On paper, it's a very tempting spread. I had to stay away though because I could see UF laying a colossal beatdown on UT, 95 Huskers style. Florida should have very fresh legs since they haven't played anybody yet, and I think all the Kiffin smack talking is still very fresh in the minds of the Gator coaches and players.

The Kiffin smack talk is irrelevant, other than for things like using time outs against him at the end of a blow out, just to rub it in. Once the game begins and everyone starts hitting each other all the bulletin board hyperbole by the media is a non-issue on the field. These guys aren't going to be lacking for motivation, regardless.

Florida may win by forty, and if they do it'll simply be because Tennessee sucked too much to prevent it.

I didn't say they lacked motivation before, I just think they'll play with extra fire now. I can't know that for sure, but that's my opinion.

And coaches looking to make a statement don't just call timeouts, Van. Urban will be going for TDs early and often.

SMU -6.5? Wazzu hasn't been within double digits of covering yet. By the way, if being 6.5 dogs at home to SMU isn't rock bottom I don't know what is.

Yeah, what the hell happened to Wazzou? Earlier part of this decade they were one of the best teams in the country for 3-4 years and now they're about the worst team. If I recall correctly, they had a similar run to what Iowa did in 2002-2004......weren't those the years Wazzou went on their string of 10 win seasons too??

I know Price left, but you would figure they would have had no problems attracting a good coach. Middle part of this decade, that was a damn good job especially considering U-Dub was starting to fall apart thanks to their crooked coach.

Same reason KSU fell apart. No location + no tradition = shitty coaching prospects.

When Price left WSU made the mistake of promoting the long-time loyal assitant coach Bill Doba. Nice guy. Decent football mind. But not equipped for the riggors of being the head coach of a major D-1 program. He was older. His wife was fighting a losing battle with cancer. Just couldn't handle the load recruiting wise. He won 10 games and beat Texas his first year with Price's players then the talent ran dry quick. I mean, we're talking about a roster full of guys who just aren't D-1 athletes period. The misconseption with Price was that he won with less-talent. Perhaps that was true with respect to the USC and Oklahoma's, put Price always had his share of athletes. Those 2001-03 teams had 5 db's that would go on to start games in the NFL. Lamont Thompson, Eric Coleman, Jason David, Karl Paymah, and Marcus Trufant. Only Trufant became a star, but still, you don't make an NFL roster as a defensive back, let alone start unless you are a superior athlete. And Price had them.

*** Update. I just read where the one big-time athlete WSU has, two time NCAA 400 meter hurdle champ Jeshua Anderson, is quitting the football team to focus on track***

Never hire the long-time loyal assitant coach to replace a succussful head coach. There's a reason they were a long time ASSISTANT coach. It's resulted in declines at other schools but WSU seems to be the most extreme example. The one that was as bad that comes to mind was when Ralph Miller, the legendary Oregon State basketball coach, retired. His longtime assistant Jim Anderson replaced him at went to the tourney his first year with GP as a senior in '90. Then it all came apart and the program hasn't been back to the dance since.

You can attract good coaches to shitty places. Some you couldn't get, but there's plenty of good coaches out there that would take a quality BCS gig regardless of location.

Iowa never has problems keeping coaches around. We've had 2 coaches in the last 30 years and both have been successful. Iowa City is a great college town, but if you're beyond your college years it certainly isn't much to see.

Nebraska has no problems finding good coaches, and I wouldn't wish my worst enemy residence anywhere in that state.

There isn't a BCS school that couldn't find a decent coach when they're coming off 3 straight 10 win seasons, I don't care where you're located. So I don't buy this reasoning.

i think the idea is that he'll keep his foot on the pedal. whereas they generally go into ball-control mode after getting up a few td's, all kiffin's talk means meyer goes harder longer.
