Moving to Portland - any tips, info?
So my job is taking me to Portland from Detoilet in about 6 weeks. Been looking at hoods. Gonna rent for a while to scope out the place before settling in. Anyone got suggestions for moderately-priced (read less than 1000/mo) hoods? Also, how good is that transit system? I'll be located across the Williamette next door to the Convo Center. Want to be able to move to a single vehicle and rely on transit to get to work. Thanks!

I imagine the worst neighborhood in Portland has to be better than Detroit. Enjoy Dinsland. Care to share what you do for a living that you would be better for the company out in Portand.

Re: Moving to Portland - any tips, info?
Portland is very bike friendly. Try to find a place that is a reasonable bike commute and drop a few bucks on a good bicycle. I ride 12 miles to work (not often as I should, but pretty regularly in decent weather). It is an awesome way to wake yourself up in the morning. And with some decent raingear, year round commuting shouldn't be a problem in Portland.
If money is no object, go ahead and buy a $$$$$$ rig at the local bike shop. If money is an object, craigslist has tons of very solid older bikes. Spend a few hundred on one of those rather than a $300 wallymart pos.
Wonder how many fukked up trolls I'll find there tomorrow?
If your commute is under 5 miles a good fixed suspension mountain bike would work well. Longer commutes will have you wanting the extra speed of a road bike.
I'll PM you with a very good biking interweb board where you can research the pros and cons.

I don't ride route 1.Toddowen wrote:Let me guess.....Boeing?
Smakaholic, shouldn't you be a little more concerned with being there for your family in the next few decades? I wouldn't dare make a 2 mile daily commute on a bicycle where I live.
Someday that chamber is gonna be the loaded one, pal. Put that thing down and get back in your car.
The roads are pertty much deserted when I ride in. On my ride home I take a different route which is pretty much deserted all the time.
If you stop doing everything that MIGHT get you killed, you're dead already.

Re: Moving to Portland - any tips, info?
I realize my spreadsheet is prolly way out of date, but I thought Dr. D worked for the city of Detroit. Not much chance of a transfer under those circumstances.
But since everyone else has danced around the 800 lb. gorilla in the room, I'll mention it: Dr. D and Dinsdale in the same city? Is Portland big enough for both of them? Time will tell, I guess.
Btw, this will make two Skunkbear fans in the U&L. Dr. D and M Club could be bestest buds and what not, except for the political differences.

I stopped working for the City of Detroit back in 2003 and took a position with a suburb at that time. I'll be doing HR and LR work in Portland now.
Already doing the commute by bike thing now putting in about 11 mi each way.
What's the fishing like on the Williamette and on the Columbia? My pops says there's a major program to restock the Columbia out that way with Steelhead!

Dr.D? Nevermind, you won't like Gresham. You should look into 82nd and Foster. Don't worry, all the darkies live in NE, close to the Convention Center. You won't encounter many of them panhandling because that's a white man's gig, and affirmative action hasn't quite reached PDX proper yet. Unless you're a homo.
Re: Moving to Portland - any tips, info?
Saw something in the paper about this last week I think. They wanna spend 20 gazillion dollars and make everyone fishing below McNary dam use single barbless hooks.JMak wrote:

Depending on who you listen to we might have a record Steelhead run this year already. Whether this is because of El Nino, commercial fishing, Global warming, stocking efforts, ocean temperatures, river flows, spring flooding, summer droughts, sea lions , commorants, algae blooms, dredging the river....take your pick.

Take up residence accross the river in Washington so you don't have to pay Oregon state income tax. Then buy all your shit in Oregon so you don't have to pay Washington sales tax.

MClub, I'll be working just a few blocks west of the Convo Center.
Wifey's been checking out hoods like Sellwood, Mt. Tabor, etc. Plan is to go out by myself for a few days to locate housing.

Ol' Lake NoNegro, eh.
Re: Moving to Portland - any tips, info?
Sellwood's nice enough, though a bit too close to Milwaukie for my taste. Plus, there's that bridge. Play a lot of Journey and you'll fit in fine.JMak wrote:MClub, I'll be working just a few blocks west of the Convo Center.

Tabor's my favorite part of Pdx. I initially lived in Multnomah Village but moved to Clinton/Division. Not a fucking worry.
