You've grown used to it. The cold and wind up that way isn't anything I ever want to experience again. Lake effect snow is the worst.

Jeebus, Diego. Get the thingamajigs that go over the end of the bars. I believe Hippo Hands is the big brand, I've got a set of nylons cheapies, which still make a HUUUUUUUUGGGGGEEEEE difference. Hell, I haven't even owned a bike in years, you can have them. Spent 3 U&L winters getting around on a bike as a young man... no thanks.
Getting anywhere on a bike in anything below 25 is nuts. And 45 ain't really a prty either, but magnitudes of degrees better than <25.

Starting the last part of my trip west from Detroit to Portland. Looks like some winter weather advisories for most of OR.
I hope the roads stay clear from Boise to Portland. Getting into Iowa City on Wednesday night sucked and getting from there to Des Moines was a three hour cluster on Thursday morning. Got into Laramie, WY Thursday night under clear skies and single digits.
Laramie to Salt Lake was an easy drive with clear skies and mid-20s. The I84 stretch between Salt Lake and Idaho was freaking sweet! Mountains all around you...
Today - bail out of Boise mid-morning...

Iffy, Mak.
The weatherdorks, as per U&L usualm, were wrong. Just a matter of how wrong at this point.
But -- there's a system coming from the south, or so they say, and I-84 is a notorious bitch in winter. Not your standard, garden variety bitch, but a taking-your-life-in-your-hands bitch. The Gorge gets massive amounts of freezing rain under the right conditions -- like these conditions -- and we're talking inches upon inches. And when it does, they just shut the interstate down, to avoid the inevitable carnage, and save on the expense of fishing all the trucks and cars out of The Creek.
But this ominous storm that threatened us Lowlanders with an intimidating 1" of snow pretty much ran out of gas and pooped its pants about 50 miles south, and hasn't shown up yet -- and it's warming up quickly so far this morning... BUT, the Gorge is a whole different animal in winter. WAY colder and wetter, even though it's adjacent to the city.
If they do end up closing I-84 before you make it through -- you're pretty much fucked. If there's precipitation in the Gorge, there's probably twice as much on the alternates. As much as I owe it to this board to allow you to Darwin out -- when you look at the map to scope alternative routes... don't do it. Every one of them involves bigazz mountain passes, and if there's enough of a storm to close 84, you really don't want any part of the mountain passes. Sure, you could chain up (which is often required on the mountain roads, and they will have checkpoints), but even if you're fine, you have to worry about Jose', who is a notorious hazard in winter.
So if you get shut down -- enjoy lovely Pendleton, or The Dalles, or wherever you get fucked into staying. Supposed to warm way up over the next day or two, so it's better to just wait it out. As a few current-events-threads on these boards have shown over the years, the Cascades ain't fucking around in winter.
Snowiest place on Earth + steep twisty mountain roads = Darwin laughs
Supposed to be mid-50's here in the Valley by midweek-btw. And when it's very warm this time of year ("warm" being a relative term), pretty safe bet it'll be raining like hell. Which I'm OK with, as long as it's warm. Then we can go from "winter storm watch" to "flood watch," and the sub-80 IQ motherfuckers the news station HR departments so delight in can lie about something different.

UPDATE -- in the 15 minutes since my last post, it started...
raining. Very very light.
Not freezing rain... just good ol' U&L drizzle/mist.
Now, if there is a storm in the next month (pretty much the window for it, although not carved-in-stone), they'll claim to be out of funds for de-icing, since they spent it on this media-fuelled hype.
I still wouldn't want to be driving through the Gorge, though. BTW-if you read this before you head out, take a break and stop at Multnomah Falls, about 15 miles before you get into town. Freaking spectacular after a few days of really cold temps. You'll thank me later.

When I wish death upon you, it's virtual death. Not an actual death.
And going over Santiam Pass would provide a high risk of death... and Santiam gets shut down, as well. Way nastier winter drive than 84 or US26 over Mt Hood.
Looks like this:
And you'd be going down a twisty road in those conditions for 50 freaking miles. Been there, done that (in a whiteout -- what a party that was... last year), rather not do it again.
And Trampis is nuts-btw. A lot more resources go into keeping the interstate open than that little hodunk gravel road on the Wrong Side of the river (SR14 in WA), which will experience identical weather as 84.
From the looks of it, 84 is getting sketchy in the Gorge. Looks like traction devices are required. But don't pick up the map and decide that OR35 is an alternate -- very nasty in a storm. And US97 down to 26 might seem like an alternate -- I'd pass on that one as well.
My advice would probably be to stick to 84 -- being an interstate, it gets the most attention -- although it gets some of the nastiest conditions. Go as far as they'll let you, which will most likely be all the way into Portland.
Looking at the ODOT reports, there's a "severe" alert for the Gorge, but they're still letting people through for now, with chains or traction tires. If you don't have any (I'm assuming you do, if you made it this far west), stop at Les Schwab in Pendelton, or any other town along 84, and they'll hook you up (but they're based in Pendelton, so I'm sure they're less likely to be out of stuff at the homebase).
If you get fucked -- chalk it up to bad luck and grab a hotel -- supposed to be much better by tomorrow. That's winter travel in the U&L -- fucked if you hit it wrong. Don't feel bad, truck drivers and everyone else deal with it, too. But as a high-profile chinkcicle and numerous other lower profile fools have shown over and over, a bad travel decision in the nastier parts of the Northwest can easily result in death.
Part of life here. Is it March yet?
Other than the travel, I suppose it's a good time to move here -- right when the weather makes it's annual decent into the shitter. After a couple months of the suicide-weather, it makes the advent of spring a pretty loyous occasion.
Be safe.

^^^^^ Never driven 84 in a winter storm.
There's that whole deal with a few inch thick sheet of ice coupled with 60MPH winds, coupled with few guard rails between you and the drink.
Going from east to west of the Cascades, I'd say 84 is still the best option, but it can still be suicidal. And it gets closed down often.
Surely you've tranversed the Cascades in winter? Sketchy proposition at best, death-wish at worst.
I'll still take my chances with flat, straight 84 over the mountains, though, even though the mountains get snow and 84 often gets ice.
But once you get to the lowlands at the western base of the mountains, all is usually fine... albeit wet.
DrD just picked a shitty day for his journey... s'all. Plenty of those to be had in the next 2 months.

Frigid temperatures trigger wind chill alerts in Prairies
CTV.ca News Staff
Date: Saturday Dec. 12, 2009 12:36 PM ET
The Prairies are feeling winter's wrath in full force this weekend.
Environment Canada has issued wind chill warnings across the region, affecting large parts of Manitoba and Alberta and almost all of Saskatchewan.
Most can expect temperatures of -40 degrees Celsius, dropping to as low as -50 C in some parts of the province over the next 24 hours.
While the forecast for major cities such as Calgary, Edmonton and Saskatoon are all hovering around -30 C, forecasters are calling for a frigid minus-45 C once the wind-chill is factored in.
Environment Canada is blaming the freeze on Arctic air coupled with a Northwesterly wind and has warned that frostbite could occur on exposed skin in 10 minutes or less for most of the Prairies.
Conditions should let up somewhat by the middle of Sunday when winds are expected to weaken.
On the upside, most major cities across the Prairies are only expected to get a light dusting of snow, if any.

Alrighty then.
Cross the river at Hood River (can't miss the bridge), which last time I crossed it, they charged me $0.75... might have gone up. Take SR14 west until you see I205 South, and you're here. Or go all the way to I5 on SR14, if you're heading for the middle parts of the city, either way works out about the same.
34 and dry here-btw. I guess I'll stop using the MASSIVE WINTER STORM as an excuse to be lazy, and I'll get my ass over to a certain female's house, where I'll be fed and blown.

Staying in The Dalles tonight. Road signs said I84 closed at Exit 64.
Dins, no chains or traction devices. Wouldn't know that to do with them even if I did. The passes north and west of Boise and into eastern Oregon were difficult but doable. Just kept the speed down and stayed off the brakes.
Pendleton was dicey. Coming down the pass leading into Pendleton from the east was a pisser, couple of 180 degree turns coming down with a 6% grade and both lanes covered with snow made my palms sweat a bit. Just past Pendleton was a nasty pickup, SUV, semi accident. SUV took the brunt having looked like it flipped with all the windows blowed the fuck out and the driver's doors removed by fire/rescue.
But, I'm in The Dalles tonight. What a drive through the Gorge so far. No precip to speak of the whole way and seeing the canyon walls...wow!

Truman, the only training goal I have is the PGH Marathon...and that's in May. Tomorrow morning I'll be going 16 miles - if it's cold enough. That is, running in sub-freezing weather is much preferred to 35 and rain. Of course in this area, you're only a few days removed from 35 and rain at any time of the year...

Significant enough. Rack you very much, PSU!
Get the "cold enough" reference... You'll be perfectly warm by Mile 2. Still, a 16 mile trainer for a race scheduled for at least five-and-a-half months out should put you on pace to challenge Dean Karnazas in the Vermont100!
Did the falling temperatures/freezing rain thing for 26.2 in KC back in October... Bad enough my knees were brain-damaged by Mile 20, but to contend with wet feet and frozen digits on both hands didn't exactly not suck. That's why a combination of wet, cold, and early are my least favorite conditions to run in... but not enough to make me smart enough not to want do it again come next October. Best of luck, PSU!

If you wanna get technical, you haven't made it to the Gorge yet. Kind of just entering it there. Much harder to see the sudden transition in vegitation zones in winter (you go through 5 distinct zones in the ~60 mile drive... crazy shit).
Those canyon walls go up 4000 feet once you're in the Gorge. 'Cept last I saw driving on 84 in town, was that it's still closed.
Sucks to be you... even worse to be you and be stuck in The Dalles.

Managed five on the treadmill today - tedious as an LTS post, I know - but burned enough kcals to justify the usual assault of my liver on an NFL Sunday... especially as a Griefs fan. Again, rack the intent of your effort.
Seed planting: Would expect nothing less than marathon PET come May, PSU, weather permitting. Action-shots of spandex-clad female butts passing your old ass wouldn't suck... Had thoughts of doing the same back in October, but I didn't think digital shots taken thru a ziplock would be post-worthy, and the Eckerd was fresh out of underwater disposables. Besides, it was effort enough to haul my junky ass over the Distance without being encumbered by additional weight!

Truman has got the ticket. If you are unknowing, footraces are some of the best babe-sighting events going. My yearly trot through The Great Race is always a brisk one, buoyed as I am by endless cute college girls zinging by me in form-fitting garb. This decreases with the length of the race, though - as many times the rigors of marathon training tend to burn out the wonderful curves afore bespoken

there are places that can call weather bode, the redneck riviera ain't one of them, imo. you get occasional cold wet and nasty during the winter and 7 or 8 months of miserable humidity.

Hard to believe it but we're protected on the west by about 15 miles of Camp Pendleton (and lake Pacific), on the north by the Santa Margarita Mountains (small by California standards but prolly taller than anything you have), on the east by Mt. Palomar and the Mojave Desert, and on the south by the San Luis Rey River valley.
At close to 1000 feet elevation we don't get much crap in the air. And at night you can see lots of stars because there's not much light. Well, a lot less than there was when I lived near Vegas.
Sort of the hole in the donut. Or something.
