This shithole needs a jazz thread.
My favorite jazz quartet of all time gets on the A train....
Kinda ho hum until about the 6 minute part when brubeck, morello and wright start jamming. These fukkers are tight.
Camera work is fukking awesome as well.
Pretty sure Morello is the original "joe cool".

hard to hear the videos over the fukking crickets in this forum.
oh well.
just found another rendition of A train by the master himself.
The duke is a straight up genius.
why can't black folks be as good at running functional democracies as they are at playing jazz?

don't everybody jump in at once. good thing there's a separate music forum. all this traffic would overwelm cds.
I think I might have to offically move joe morello to the number 2 spot for favorite drummers if I watch this clip anymore.
papa jo jones is a mutherfukking wytch. So effortless.

Even though I might prefer listening to joe morello or papa jo, there's no denying, buddy is the fukking king of the drum kit.
LZ, if you're out there and you wanna know what "chops" are, have a look at this.....
and I fukking love buddy's sneer when he's kickin' ass on a solo, he's got that look that say, "yeah, mutherfukker, you fukkin' wish you could do this"
btw, dude's 61 in this clip.

OK I just saw this. Some good stuff here.
I especially like me some Oscar Peterson.
Also into old Miles Davis quintet type stuff from 60s, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and the whole progression of some of the musicians from Davis' groups through Bitches Brew, Weather Report, etc.
Was privileged to see Elvin Jones play at the Blue Note in Greenwich Village about 10 years ago.
I'll have to look up some nice clips later.

the 50-60s is the zenith of jazz. some of the newer fusion type stuff is really cool, but, not quite as cool as this stuff is. check out some old thelonius monk stuff from before he went completely batshit crazy.Mikey wrote:OK I just saw this. Some good stuff here.

the young whippersnapper speed metal fans need to take travis what's his face's ballsack out of their mouths and check out jo jones, rich, elvin jones, morello, roach, etc to see what real drumming is. jo jones can do more with 1 stick, his hands and a snare drum than one of those wankers can do with their quadruple bass (pray for him) 87 piece drum kits.

50-60's is the time for bebop and modal jazz. that you guys are pimping Brubeck is a little iffy. the official white-person who went to a liberal arts college in the midwest in the 60's jazz hero.

So, Crimson, I see are from the 'you gotta be a black dude with a heroin habit and funny hat' school of jazz appreciation.
Racist, fukkstik.
Sorry, but nobody "runs circles around time out". It is a jazz masterpiece. It may not be your cup of tea, but, so fukking what. I will admit that DBQ has, for lack of a better term, a "whiter" sound to it than typical black jazz groups of the time, but, it's still fukking jazz and they are right up there with the rest of them.
I did listen to a few of the cats you mentioned. Pretty cool shit. I get a kick out of thedude cat that hangs an entire woodwind section around his neck when he plays. Looks like pickkkle at a black panther's meeting with saxes in play of black cahk.
Note* This is a jazz thread. Everybody is a cat. Use of the term dude will not be tolerated.

Not to get off the subject of jazz, but this guy is one of my favorite drummers of all time. Like I said, not a pure jazz drummer. I'd say R&B though. sorry, but, nobody else even comes close.

Just 'cause it's got congas don't make it "latin". I guess you don't know R&B from a hole in the ground.
And, I will have to respectfully disagree with this:

Re: This shithole needs a jazz thread.
went back and listened to that first clip of dave garibaldi again. it definitely starts out kinda funky, but then it starts getting complex and at times has a latin sound to it, although i will admit that a good part of that is the congas, but, at no time am I thinking R&B for the same reason you state later. It's too complex. He certainly plays things that are more complex than purdie, but to say that he or anybody else for that matter has a better funky grove that prudie? neeeegah please. one of the clips in your second post has a stronger funk groove all the way through. it might be kind of R&Bish.

The guy plays drums for Tower of Power and has been for 40 years plus. You call TOP "kind of R&Bish"? How else would you classify it? "Funk" maybe, but I'm pretty sure that that would be at least a subset.

just sayin' that that first clip of him you posted did not strike me as R&B at all.Mikey wrote:LOLsmackaholic wrote:went back and listened to that first clip of dave garibaldi again. it definitely starts out kinda funky, but then it starts getting complex and at times has a latin sound to it, although i will admit that a good part of that is the congas, but, at no time am I thinking R&B for the same reason you state later. Re: This shithole needs a jazz thread.
time for a little old school big band.
nothing rocks like this tune.
has a rock or R&B group ever tried doing anything with sing, sing, sing? seems like it would work pretty well, especially an R&B group with lots of horns.

I've got that Benny Goodman at Carnegie Hall collection. Pretty good stuff.
Here are some more recent masters at work. This band was one of those that got me interested in jazz back in the day.
Jaco (RIP) was one amazing bassist. Shorter is an American treasure.

I know that this thread tends toward black and white jazz but I uncovered a few videos on youtube that you guys HAVE to check out. This is some truly awesome stuff. Rite of Strings -- three amazing musicians at work.

Here's about the first thing I found while searching for Lionel on Youtube. A nice little mix of jazz, big band swing, rythm and blues, and some afro-caribe thrown in.
I heard something. Very low level noise, basically. I guess you could turn it all the way up and identify it as some sort of music. Not sure I'd go as far as calling it audio.
