I think you pose a very valid question 88. Speaking for me, just for me, I have concluded the following.

1. There was a dude named Jesus.
2. He descended from the David family tree.
3. He felt as if his life's calling was to be crucified, die, and rise again.
4. He fought that calling until he could fight it no more - @30.
5. He did what He had to do to make it come to pass.
6. It came to pass.

I explain the "resurrection" as - he wasn't totally dead. Remember, at the time most were "believers" in some God or Gods, and "science" hadn't yet found a foolproof way to detect if someone's brain was completely flatlined. Also, they didn't gut corpses and embalm them yet.

Half alive, when someone came to tend to His corpse, he got out. The rock was rolled away, the body missing. As he healed He was seen.

He then got on a boat to come to North America and teach the Native American Indians.

It's that simple. Either way, much of what He said has come to pass since then. You can blame corrupt churches, evil, and bitch and moan all you want about how Christianity was spread - but the bottom line is that it spread and there are Christians all over the globe - WHO WEREN'T TORTURED INTO IT.

Rog, you and Pop are all over the place. A page or two ago, when I said I wanted some old school proof of the existence of God, you basically said that all of that stuff in the Old Testament was just stories told to children, and not real.

that's not even anecdotal evidence. that's just people attributing the psychological benefits of believing in god to the actual existence of one. some feel they "can do all things through christ which strengthen [them]" while others figure they can just do it because they have the ability to do so, so why not.

i find "the power of god working in my life" to be nothing more than the confidence i have in myself, the security of the relationships i've developed with the people i love, and acceptance of the life cycle. i don't find it necessary to come to terms with life through myth i've mistaken for reality, though i certainly appreciate if others use that vehicle. if someone tells me they believe in god, be it whatever religion, i think great and generally leave it at that, at least until they begin to impress upon me the 'truth' of their beliefs and my basic inquiry about how they know leaves us with nothing more than "faith."

Valid response. I believe in the evolution of psychology the term "super ego" might be the area of the psyche to which you are referring but it's been awhile since I took a psych class. It is one area where Dr. Freud and Dr. Jung disagreed a bit. Jung was open to some external supernatural entity being able to work in the lives of people. Not as if Jung was blaring the trumpets over the power of God, but he was just open to the notion and viewed spiritual impact on humans as something science could not yet explain.

I think it depends on the method they use to impress upon you and most importantly the motivation. If they're trying to "convert" you, yes that's a pain in the ass. But if you're struggling with something and have asked a person how it is they dealt with it and their answer to you is "prayer and faith", then I don't view that as them trying to convert you as much as simply telling what works in their life.
