Mark this down
One week until training camp begins....
The Kansas City Chiefs will win the AFC West this year.
I dare anybody to dispute this forecast.

srsly, I think this team has got it's shit together, and it's about damn time. I'm not normally one to make predictions, much less whack predictions, but i feel this in my bones.
Bend over bitches.
KC 10-6
SD 9-7
Oak 6-10
Dung 4-12

If you don't want to be mocked, go ahead and begin to explain how this 4-12 team, which was 25th on offense and 30th on defense has all of a sudden "got it's shit together."
We're waiting.

Being mocked is part of the game.
But since you asked so nicely....
The O-line has been much improved. Ryan Lilja and Casey Weigman out front told me so.
Cassel, D-Bowe, and Jamal Charles are going to light it up.
On the defensive side... err, I don't mind winning games 41-38.

Wags, have another on me.
San Diego and Denver will run away in a two horse race. The bolts will pull it out in the end.
What a shit division.

Wagon, you produced nothing at all convincing.
Scott, you produced, "We play a soft schedule."
Funny that you say, "We get Buffalo, Cleveland, and Jax," because you played all three of them last year and chalked up, you guessed it, three fat L's.
bwaaaa ...
You also tout the fact that you get six games within the "weak" AFC West.
Well, what did that get you last year?
Two wins and four losses.
Yeah, I'm LOLing here.
If I was going to build a case for KC this year I would say: "Last year we had a new QB and a rookied head coach. And we were fully rebuilding. That's seldom going to produce great things. So now our QB and coach are in year two. They should both be better. We've added R. Crennel and C. Weis to the coaching staff. Our O-Line looks like it might be improved. We've got two guys, Charles and Bowe, who can make plays on offense. We've acquired some young bodies on defense the last couple of years and we're hoping they are ready to establish themselves as solid pros. In a West that isn't really strong, I can see us being a factor."
Myself, I see KC doing really well if they can nudge up and be a .500 team this year.
Thinking they are going to win the division is a little far-fetched, if you ask me.
On the bet, let me see how things are shaping up for Oakland in about a month, Scott.
I'll let ya know, thanks.

As was mentioned previously, the additions of Casey Wiegmann and Ryan Lilja to the offensive line, and Thomas Jones in the backfield to form the best 1-2 punch in the AFC West will greatly improve the Chiefs' offense. The best addition to that side of the ball however is new OC Charlie Weis. He is a PROVEN offensive coaching stud (right PatsFan?) who will maximize the talent that's available to him. Even Dwayne Bowe, who I give credit for sacking up and going to Larry Fitzgerald's WR camp where he got broken down and built back up by the likes of Cris Carter, Michael Irvin and Jerry Rice. Hopefully that experience will translate to less dropped balls and more big plays this season.
On the defensive side of the ball, DC Romeo Crennel should be a noticeable upgrade over Clancy Pendergast. Keeping LB Derrick Johnson in the starting lineup can only be a good thing as well. The addition of Eric Berry at safety should allow Crennel to get creative with his defensive matchups, as Berry can play ANY corner or safety position, and play them well. The biggest "ifs" for this defense will be IF linemen Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson continue to progress at their positions and start putting up the numbers that their lofty draft positions and contracts warrant. IF they have breakout seasons then that defense will be fucking DOMINANT, but in no way am I for one going to hold my breath and think that's going to happen.
Like Scott said, the Donks are going to shit the bed this season, but I think the Bolts are due to come back to the pack- the Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill holdouts will hurt that offense, and now that Jamal Williams is gone that run D will not be near as good.
Which leaves the RAYDAHS.....that team to me is a sleeping giant, and IF Jason Campbell even plays halfway as good as he's capable of playing and Darren McFadden decides to join the team again then that offense will be a lot better than originally thought. Their defense will be even better than last year with the addition of McClain from Alabama at LB. That bunch just might get over .500 this year, but the Chiefs quite frankly are going to sweep them home and away.
Chiefs win the division in a squeaker over the Blots.

Good pick up. Has veteran savvy and relatively low mileage. Should be a good compliment to Charles.

They haven't shown any progess at all. They're busts. The sooner you realize that and cut bait, the better off you'll be.
They're both vets and neither one is going to sit out the season. Jackson is a nonfactor. Receiver is the deepest position on the team. McNeill will show up.Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill holdouts will hurt that offense,
He only played one game last year, slim. The Bolts have gotten younger, better and deeper at the position in the draft. They also have improved vastly in the running game.Jamal Williams is gone that run D will not be near as good.
The Bolts will walk away with the division again. The Dongholes will finish barely north of 500 and the Chefs and Duhs will post losing records.

10-6 wins the division this year.
Looking at the schedule, I can't see either the Raiders or the Chiefs doing better than 8-8. It would take four wins in division to do better than .500. That ain't happenin'.
The west is probably still the Chargers to win. I just won't predict their demise if they start slow again. Both the Raiders and the Chiefs will improve, no doubt. They just aren't in "mark this down" territory yet. It's just a shame the Broncos won't start 4-0 this year, so we may never get a prediction out of their fans.

Myself, I never assume much about the schedule based on what it looks like before the season begins.
Each year there are surprise teams - both up and down.
Sometimes a schedule that appears soft ends up being pretty damn difficult, and visa versa.
In July, who knows?

Re: Mark this down
My own take on KC (posted in this thread) before the season began:
Big props to KC and to KC fan who called the shot.
SD and Oakland both had moments, and both might be seen to have more overall team talent, but the Chiefs -- wire-to-wire -- were the class of the West this season.
Much deserved division crown.
Tardd Haley deserves serious consideration for COY.
And Matt Cassel stepped up his game a whole lot, showed guts, and really balled this year.
Props to that guy.
Scott, Paul, Wagon - hit me up with a PM to let me know how to settle up on our wager.

His takes on Weis and Crennel look particularly foolish right about now.
COACHING is the main reason KC stepped up and got it's program together, imo.
Re: Mark this down
Expanding on that take, it wouldn't surprise me to see KC go on a bit of a roll with AFC West titles in the next couple/few years - as SD has done.
Reason?
Continuity.
Given the head coaching "failures" of Crennel Weis, I don't know that they will be highly sought after when head coaching jobs open up.
They could settle in in KC and keep coaching things up to success there.
If KC can add a receiver, some more defensive talent, maybe more depth or bulk at O-Line, they could be THE team to beat in the West for a while, as well as be knocking on the door to an AFC Championship or two.
Hate to think of it, but that's what I see.
SD is fading and it might be JUST Rivers for a while.
Dungver has to get it's act together.
Oakland is very iffy.
With talent very close from roster to roster across the league, I think it is COACHING which is HUGE in the current NFL.
Sadly for Oakland, Al has made his own bed in that regard and can't (or won't) get anyone other than a warm body to occupy the head coaching position.
Sure, if you're going to win a Super Bowl, you've GOT to have a handful of outstanding players, but if you've got superior coaching and a solid organizational foundation, you can win a shitload of games in the NFL these days.
Future is potentially bright for KC, imo.
