Replay, update for 2005 and your thoughts

Just wanted to pass on some info regarding replay to you guys. The NCAA is allowing all Division 1 conferences to experiment with replay this season. Given the success in the Big 11 last year everyone is going to get a shot this season. Here are some of the stats for replay in the Big 11 last season:

10,000 plus snaps
43 game stoppages for detailed review
21 corrections
2:28 average delay

Just to clairify, many more than 43 plays were reviewed, but most were able to be verified before the next snap and therefore didn't require stopping the game. The way the system worked in the Big 11 last season there were three people in the replay booth. The first person was a tech person from the TV production crew who ran the system. The second was a communications person who kept track of things like down, distance, time, etc. The final person was the TA or techincal advisor. This was the actual person calling the shots and who made the decisions.

As soon as a play came to an end the TA could begin reviewing it. Using DVR or TiVo he would begin reviewing anything that was close. He could have the tech guy give him all the different camera angles and he could freeze frame etc. While this was going on the communicator would be looking out at the field letting the TA know what was going on. In other words he would call out when the players were up off the ground, when the 25 second clock had started, when the players were at the Line of Scrimmage, or when the ball was about to be snapped. In this way the TA could stop the game if he had not yet been able to determine if the replay supported the call.

So many more than 43 plays were reviewed, but the vast majority of these were found to be correct before the ball was snapped again and so there was no need to stop the game. This fact was missed often by TV guys who mistakenly thought that only if the game was stopped were plays reviewed.

Here is where other conferences are leaning to at this time. They have until the 1st of June to let the NCAA know of their plans for this fall. Again this is just as of today and could change by June:

ACC Will use the Big 11 system exactly
Big XII Leaning more towards the NFL style where the Referee will stick his head in a box and review the film himself. NU's coach wants coaches to be able to challenge plays like the NFL while OU and UT coaches have said that coach's shouldn't be able to challenge. Got to figure Stoops and Brown will win out over Cal, but stay tuned.

A few side effects of replay that were realized last season in the Big 11 were that coaches behavied better, it had a calming effect on fans, and there was less destruction, profanity, and violence.

As far as I know, the SEC will be reviewing IM this season. It doesn't exactly allow for a great deal of overturn, but as horrid as the officiating in the SEC has become in recent years, anything helps...though the stoppages will be a pain.

Sorry now I get how I was unclear on what I meant for the SEC. They are going to have something, but I was saying they are unsure on which system.

Not exactly true. In addtition to the regular television cameras, there will also be additional cameras to help the official in determining the correct call of a reviewed play. This is supposed to speed up the process. I have heard that there may be 2 more people in the booth to look at the play, but the final decision rests on the technical advisor.

They used it twice at our spring game the other day and both times the correct call (both overturning the ruling on the field) was made and done in under 1 minute in each instance.

I think that replay was a good thing last year. It's good to have a method of reversing totally blown calls, or at least a chance in hell at it.

I'd like to see some of the arbitrariness taken out of it. I favor the NFL system, where a coach has to instigate the replay. I think it becomes an interesting part of the strategic aspect of the game.
