It's a combination of poor recruiting, in my opinion, I think coach (Lloyd) Carr (who retired after the 2007 season), to be perfectly honest, left the cupboard bare in his last few years. I don't think they recruited the talent because you look at the upperclassmen that they have. They're all great kids. I had a chance to meet with a bunch of them. They practice hard, they play hard, and they're tough, but it comes down to one thing when you're talking about playing at a high level like Michigan is used to playing at, and that's talent. And they have zero on defense. One kid, the Martin kid. Other than that, a lot of guys would be nice little subs at Indiana.

But yet it still shows no sign of improvement after Dick Rod came aboard...Carr may have left the cupboard bare, but RR should answer why it is still that way.
Re: Chris Spielman on the Michigan defense
not defending dickrod's approach to defense at all, but in fairness to him carr's recruiting nosedived near the end of his tenure, meaning this year's senior class, as well as next year's fifth-year seniors, will have come from classes carr didn't put much work into. it makes sense that the defense has gotten progressively worse since the leadership of dickrod's first defense was recruited all the way back in 02 or 03. this year's was recruited when carr stopped making in-home visits.
in the meantime, many of dickrod's higher-rated defensive recruits either transferred or were thrown in jail.

Re: Chris Spielman on the Michigan defense
There isn't a single TCU defender that could crack the 4-deep at Michigan.
