Sometimes I hate regional coverage

Post by MgoBlue-LightSpecial »

USC-ND...who gives a fuck? This game has the feel of a Tuesday night Sun Belt tilt on ESPNU. But with less offense. Two unranked also-rans who won't go bowling because one sucks at cheating and the other feels mid tier bowls are "beneath" them. You know, since it's ND, and they play in championship games.

Seriously, when the annual Jimmah v Killian slugfest doesn't take place you know this game is especially lame.

Wish I could be watching Bedlam over this shite :brad:

Not a big fan of regional coverage myself, as a general rule, but it worked out pretty well for me last night.

As I've mentioned before, the cable package I get gives me both the Rochester and Buffalo network TV affiliates. As luck would have it, last night the Buffalo ABC affiliate got ND-USC, and the Rochester affiliate got Bedlam (don't ask me why, that was ESPN's doing, and ESPN has never made any sense whatsoever to me). So I managed to watch both my Domers end the 8-game losing streak against USC, and the end of the Bedlam game. Best of all possible worlds for me, as it turned out.

Not quite sure where you got your info from, but . . .

Until 1970, ND didn't play in bowl games. Period. (Except for the 1925 Rose Bowl, which was planned ahead of time to be a one-off.) ND changed its policy when, and only when, it became apparent that playing in a bowl game would be a necessary prerequisite for winning a national championship. So part of the change in ND's policy was the express limitation that ND would play in a bowl game only when such a game had the potential to impact the national championship.

It's not that mid-tier bowls are "beneath" ND so much as it is that ND believes that a trip to a bowl game should be a reward for an extraordinary season, not so much a 7-5 season. I don't believe that ND's fanbase is entirely unique in that perspective. Of course, that particular ship has long since sailed.

All of that being said, ND is going bowling this year. The Champs Sports Bowl has expressed an interest in taking ND, and while the overwhelming majority of ND's fanbase probably wishes that the Big East had a better non-BCS option available than that, I'm reasonably certain that ND will accept that bowl bid when and if it's offered.

Dude, Meds has been almost completely MIA from these boards for a year. At least. I can't speak as to the reasons why, but given what's transpired within his school's program in the past year or so, it's hardly surprising that he hasn't made it a priority to return. You don't expect Killian to get into that with a ghost, do you?

Whatever the reason for ND declining bids to lower-tier bowls, they're only hurting themselves. Who cares if the team "earned a reward"? The biggest benefit of going bowling is the extra 3-4 weeks of practice, which I would think would be of even greater importance to a 7-5 or 6-6 team than a 10-2 or 11-1 team.

Since 1970, ND has decline 2 bowl births. Last year during a coaching change and in 1996 when they went 8-3, and eventually changed coaches.

Minor nit, but ND also turned down a Cotton Bowl bid in 1975. Back then, the players voted on whether to accept a bowl bid, and it seems that at 7-3 (they'd finish the season 8-3 with a season-ending win over Miami), they didn't consider themselves good enough to have earned the bid. http://notredame.247sports.com/Article/ ... -Dame-7943
