most overplayed song ever
Maggie May
This was on two different radio stations today at the same fucking time as I drove home from work.
It was a great song, now I cringe everytime I hear it.
Please, make it stop.

Re: most overplayed song ever
yeah, I know.
Just need to pile all my cd collection in the car... 'cept I'd get bored with that too eventually.
No, I'm not paying for radio.
But wtf is up commercial radio thinking they need to regurgitate the same stale shit a million times over?
Next on the hit list - Dire Straights, Money for Nothing.

There is the option of listening to something other than 70s dinosaur rock. I love my classic rock as much as the next guy. But life is to short to only listen to one genre.War Wagon wrote:yeah, I know.

Get a car stereo that plays MP3s for about $99.95 (which kicks the living shit out of the high dollar stuff we had as teens), and load all your shit on a 8G thumbdrive.
Serious rocket surgery there.

"Bang On The Drum". They play it every time the Packers score a touchdown. You can hear it 6 or 7 times in the course of three hours on a Sunday.

Washington University in St. Louis has a college station the wife once worked for. I can get it at home but now far from there. Super weak signal. And the damned priveledged Wash U students are rarely on.
We have community radio with good shows, but also lots of shit shows.

Tom Sawyer, Rush.
Not so much that tom sawyer gets overplayed as it gets so much more run than other Rush tunes. And, IMO, tom sawyer ain't even in their top ten. Maybe not even top 20.

agree with Maggie May. you know who loves Maggie May? girls who see themselves as the kind of non-bourgie hot slash that a youngster would love to get in on to the sacrifice of his other opportunities (fitting his unwillinglessness to jump social classes, by quitting school and playing pool for a living).

at what point did Tom Petty become important like Bob Dylan in the minds of FM radio? more baby boomer nonsense...

I don't get it. Dylan ISN'T important in the mind of FM radio. I hardly ever hear Dyaln played, and when I do, it is always the same 2-3 songs (Like A Rolling Stone, Rainy Day Women and Tangled Up In Blue) over and over again.King Crimson wrote:tom petty: freefalling, at what point did Tom Petty become important like Bob Dylan in the minds of FM radio? more baby boomer nonsense...
As for Petty, he is an average songwiter who is a great live performer. He also had the good sense to hang out with Dylan, George Harrison and Jeff Lynne for a while. Oh, and he'll play places like Western NY whereas getting the indie bands to play here is like pulling teeth.

Back when I actually used to consume FM rock radio, Free Falling was played all the time. Pretty sure MGMT isn't getting play on Top 40 stations, numbnuts.

I believe KNRK is the highest rated station here, and a great bastion of both very popular and fringe-indie, and I have the displeasure of hearing the non-musical entity known as MGMT frequently.
Speaking of my unber-cool music town, I just heard a cool story -- Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse) bought a cool house that abuts a park. He's converted the top floor into a practice studio, and anytime it's warm out (which is most of the year), he/they open up the doors (I guess there's a big deck), and crank it way the hell up. People gather just outside of the yard and have a picnic and slam sore beers while getting a free MM show.

Coincidentally, indie bands ALWAYS play Portland. Anybody see a coincidence?Dinsdale wrote:I believe KNRK is the highest rated station here, and a great bastion of both very popular and fringe-indie, and I have the displeasure of hearing the non-musical entity known as MGMT frequently.Screw_Michigan wrote:Pretty sure MGMT isn't getting play on Top 40 stations, numbnuts.

I was going to wow everyone by showing the week's lineup at the Crystal Ballroom, but then I remembered it Portland Jazzfest week, which has taken over the Mecca of Indie Bands.
Next week, they have a slow week, but the Cold War Kids and March 4th Marching Band are playing (if you've never checked out the March 4th Marching Band, they're a hoot -- the OL's friends from New England always rave about them... they get around).
Actually, a slow month at the Trampoline (so dubbed for the "floating" hardwood floor (place is over 100 years old) that bounces up and down with the subwoofer (smart roadies put the subs right on the floor) and dancing going on... pretty awesome)...
next couplefew weeks have Devo, Bright Eyes, Ani DeFranco, Deftones/Dillinger Escape Plan, and Iron & Wine. That's a pretty slow month at the Crystal.

On a sidenote -- browsing the club listings, I found it pretty funny to see Yellowcard listed at a smaller club... and they aren't the headliners.
Hope they enjoyed their 15 minutes.

I like Dillinger Escape Plan and Devo pre-Rugrats Theme.
