Guilty pleasure
Just checked out TNT's Falling Skies.
Enjoyed it. Hard to go wrong with the aliens-invading-earth theme.
They lay the foreshadowing on a little thick, but I'm OK with it.

Not sure how old it is, but Netflix Sam...
I just got through episode 2 of season 1 of Lost. Never saw an episode before. Netflix is the kickass.

Haven't seen an episode.
There's only been one, which was a 2 hour pilot.
Probably woulda enjoyed it.
Maybe by the 22nd century, Aabama might discover that On Demand thingy.

Re: Guilty pleasure
I watched the 2nd episode Sunday night on TNT. Good costumes, special effects, dialogue and so forth, but the plot is rather lame. Aliens invade Earth to steal our children so they can collect scrap metal for them to redeem at the galactic recycling center - seems to be the extent of it.Dinsdale wrote: There's only been one, which was a 2 hour pilot.
And I can't abide 5 minutes of commercials for every 8 minutes of show. But I've always been a sucker for Sci-Fi so guess I'll keep watching it. Not much else to do late Sunday night anyways.
Re: Guilty pleasure
I've got both episodes DVRed but haven't watched any yet. Might check it out over the weekend if I have time.
I'm pretty reluctant to get at all invested in any serial dramas anymore since they rarely fail to disappoint after a few episodes. Watched Lost religiously for a couple of seasons and then Lost interest. Same with a few others, though I don't give them as much time anymore as I did to Lost.

Watched a couple of episodes on Showtime a few weeks ago and thought it was great. Seems like you could pick it up anytime and understand what's going on without having to go back to the beginning, though. My complaint about a lot of the serials is that it seems like you have to watch every week to know what's going on, but in spite of that after the first few weeks nothing really happens or gets resolved.

i like Dexter but was a little underwhelmed by the last season. it was better than most stuff....but, kinda middling compared to season 1 or 3 imo.

Re: Guilty pleasure
This thread has gotten off track. Dexter is not a guilty pleasure. Dexter is quality. A guilty pleasure is something that has little to no redeeming artistic value whatsoever yet you enjoy it nevertheless.
My guilty pleasure is Japanese splattergore flicks. Ichi the Killer, Tokyo Gore Police, Hard Revenge Milly, the Zatoichi Blind Swordsman flicks etc. They're best enjoyed at 2 am with the bleary-eyed intoxicant of choice.

Saw seasons 1 & 2 on Netflix in like 4 days. Been like 2 months and I've only seen disc 1 and 2 of season 3. Been waiting forever for disc 3. Netflix doesn't get it. Streaming is the future. Why go away from it? I almost considered cancelling my Netflix because most things Ihave been wanting to watch lately have been DVD only.jiminphilly wrote:Not to keep this thread off it's rails but unrack Netflix for removing it from streaming. You can also try Graboid. Their basic membership starts a $5 bucks a month for 10 gigs of downloads. HD downloads cost more. It's pretty good to fill in the holes that Netflix has. We just hook up a laptop to the TV and it works fine. They've got a pretty good selection of movies and shows.IndyFrisco wrote:Saw seasons 1 & 2 on Netflix in like 4 days. i've been using Graboid for a couple years...it's good for me esp since the software upgrade. It's far from perfect and more "arty" or foreign or "indie" stuff is hit or miss. sometimes you dl something that's in German. overall, i went from netflix 3 at a time to 1 with unlimited streaming and Graboid 14.99$ a month and 50,000. though i've got way more stuff than i can watch on my external HD right now.
for instance, i've prolly watched 90% of Dexter and Breaking Bad from Graboid dl's. i watched season 1 of BB in 3-4 days. marathon it, no waiting for the mail.

"Studios are starting to put their foot down," says ThinkEquity senior analyst Atul Bagga. "They weren't paying attention to streaming at all, but now they see an opportunity to monetize. And they're going to take it."
That's a big threat to Netflix. On the other hand, the company has the money and motivation to spend more to keep its rapidly growing subscriber base happy.
"The cost of content is going to go up, no doubt about it," Bagga says. "It's going to come down to who has the ability and the willingness to write big checks. Netflix is probably the one to do it."
Netflix had a $161 million profit last year on sales of $2.2 billion, and it ended last quarter with $342 million in cash on hand.
But Netflix's rivals have much larger bigger wallets. At the end of the first quarter, Amazon had almost $7 billion in cash, and Google had a whopping $37 billion.
....
"Netflix is the first and the biggest," Bagga says. "In a broad sense, the rivals aren't competing with each other. Everyone is competing with Netflix."
But if this turns into a clash of titans, Netflix is still a small player battling much larger and richer giants.
"Netflix is merely a conduit," Pachter says. "Of all the people who want to be in the business -- Google, Amazon -- they're smaller by far. The big boys will take share of subscribers, or bid up the cost of content. Either way, Netflix loses."

Unlimited streaming and 1 DVD at a time is going up 60% in price ($15.98 a month) effective Sept 1st for current NF customers. Netflix better start offering better streaming content or this will backfire. They recently pulled Dexter from streaming. WTF are they doing?

while everyone knows the future of content is streaming....fooling around with the business model that made you the big dog in the market-place is risky.

Sam, I watch tv nightly from 9-11 after I put my kids down. I suppose I could read, but I only really like to read when I travel for some reason. What else should I do from 9-11 that would be more relaxing that enjoying a movie of my choice on the tube...err...flat screen?

You not a Kyra Sedgwick fan or is the show have bad acting, plot, etc?
Sedgwick gets on my nerves at times, but I think the entire cast actually works well together and I think the writers are moderately clever in how they are able to cases to come together at the end. Like I said, its a guilty pleasure and not for everyone. I've seen far worse.

I've heard that they outperform anything you can buy. Obviously, the higher the better, but they can go in the attic or whatever. Use plywood for the reflector, and stain or paint the poo out of it, and it could be roof mounted.
Round here, we get a bunch of digital stations, but I'm in a pretty big urban area where the towers are on the highest hills on the sides of town. But I guess the homemade antenna pulls it in from deep. Quite a few bible-thumper channels, but probably 17 others, or thereabouts.
