Most of us agree with Felix that it isn't good for someone to have to work 70 hours a week in order to... just get by.

And back in the 50's and 60's, one person (the father, overwhelmingly) could work one decent job - perhaps 40 hrs, and support a family fairly comfortably.

What happened?

What concrete changes does Felix propose to rectify this situation?

That's the question.

you just asked "what happened??"

I cant believe you just asked that.

In the 50's and 60's we made things, we were THE SHIT. Now, everything is outsourced and made by idiots getting 1 or 2 bucks a day.
PLUS, and this is the best part, you'll love this, Liberal policies of entitlements and free money.
Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson's worst fears have been realized.

"When the people realize that they can vote themselves "free money", that will spell the end of this great republic".

WOW, how prophetic and wise these founding fathers were.
And how dumb are the democrats of today like chuckie schumer and barney frank and chris dodd.
WOW.

Good jobs are now being outsourced to India and China because their level of education is equal to or exceeds that of our workforce and they'll work for less money. The answer is to improve education and to educate students to be flexible, skilled in a variety of tasks rather than being an expert in one, and to be willing to work for less money. Times are changing and we have to change too. There will be fewer and fewer low paying jobs in America over the next few years. McDonalds will be manned by fewer employees as they go to a self service. Walmart will have the technology to know what's in your shopping cart before you get to the cash register, eliminating employees in the process, and factories will be manned by one man and one dog. The man to feed the dog, and the dog to keep the man away from the machinery.

The problem is that generalists get shit on in the job market just as much as the one trick whose trick is now out of date. Employers want certain skills for high paying jobs and they want those skills to be CURRENT and at a high level. You can't ask kids to take out shitloads of loans, work for 4+ years to get a degree only to be pigeonholed as a generalist.

Sounds like a dystopian novel waiting to happen. The problem is that the vision you paint is not sustainable. If we can't afford to buy it, folks in India can't afford to make it and ship it to us. And not for nothing, India, China and the rest of the developing world are on the brink of cataclysmic social and economic revolution. Arab Spring is going to look like a fucking tea party compared to when 2 billion or so dirt farmers have to come to grips with the modern world.

That will be the future, bri, and if kids want to get a decent job, they'd better be flexible and well versed in a variety of areas. Of course they can specialize and increase the chances of remaining unemployed. The changes we've seen during our lifetimes, both big and small, will pale in comparison to what we'll see in the next 10-20 years.

Mace, I AM a generalist. I AM that guy you speak of. I've done everything from tech support to QA, to tech writing to some small project management. Where the fuck are the jobs?

Mine isn't. My company shipped about $6 million worth of concrete forming equipment to Bangalore, India this year and have another order in the works.

Granted, we are a small company and $6 mil may not seem like much in the grand scheme, but still. Fact is that since the domestic homebuilding industry took a dump in 2008, 80% of our business is international, mostly in Latin America. Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, Panama, Chile, to name a few. We've done business in over 50 countries.

Contrary to what many now seem to believe, the U.S. still manufactures and exports shiploads of products overseas. Not near as much as we import, of course, but a lot of peoples jobs depend on that market.

Not that it'll ever happen, but a potential part of the solution could be for colleges to charge different amounts for tuition depending on the major. A degree in English or basket weaving should cost far less from the same school than a degree in microbiology or nuclear physics. A degree in a specialty that's in demand should cost more than one for a general liberal arts degree that will likely yield the recipient a relatively low-paying job. All bachelor degrees are not the same and are not valued the same in the job market, and therefore should not cost the same.

The solution is to get the federal government to fuck off. They have no business guaranteeing student loans. The only thing they have accomplished is to artifically inflate the cost of education into the fucking stratosphere.

More people were also able to buy houses because Clinton coerced the banks into mortgages that would never be repaid.

If the last 20 years have taught me anything it is that an education and a degree are not mutually inclusive. The rational response to overpriced sheepskins is to first get an education, not necessarily a degree. And that is what I will be telling my son when he tells me he wants to go to some 6 figure diploma mill 14 years from now.

FYI, there is a movement afoot to subvert the high cost of education. Here's a couple of examples of that in action now. With total outstanding student loan debt approaching 10% of GDP, there will be more.

Reminds me of a GF... has a BS (psychology) from a very prestigious private school (Smith).

You would think that someone with a Bachelor of SCIENCE degree would understand some basic scientific stuff... like what an "ion" is, that solids become solute in liquids at higher temps, and gasses at lower temps, a basic understanding of the laws of thermodynamics...

but no.

Hell, she barely seems to understand psychology.

I kind of followed 88's path early on, squandering a year at UConn, school of engineering. Totally immature. Didn't have a clue what studying was. Then joined the Navy, got an outstanding technical edumacashun and have been working as a tech since.

Not really sure what the answer to our problems are, other than they would be lessened if gubmint stopped trying to fix them.

One thing that annoys me is the ridiculous idea that everyone needs to go to college.

Bullshit.

As dins has shown, it is a huge waste of time and money for some. Another thing that pisses me off is the way degrees are given artifical (IMO) worth.

Yeah, there are some vocations that absolutely need the formal training, such as medicine and a few others. There are many others that really don't. Many jobs out there that require a degree shouldn't. Many of these jobs will require OJT anyway and simply require a person that is reasonably bright and willing to learn. I guess you could say that a sheepskin is proof of this, but, I would argue that. I have met degreed people that are dumber than a box full of hammers and brilliant people with just HS, sometimes less.

I think there are lots of technical jobs out there that require engineering degrees that could be filled very well by a person with a few years of experience in that particular technical field. I definitely see cases of degreed engineers who suck at their job because they just don't understand the field they are in.

BTW, can one of you college graduates tell me how to properly spell degreed? my spellcheck ain't liking my spelling.

That may be your best post ever.

Case in point. My company hired a CAD engineer who was supposedy competent, he teaches CAD at some area CC, so his resume said. This guy should be able to hit the ground running, yes? Um, no. The other techs have to hold his hand and walk him thru damn near every basic aspect of engineering drawings for the first month.

Meanwhile, they bring this rather sharp dude up from the shop floor who knows how to actually build the product using CAD drawings and in matter of days, he's up to speed.

Point being, classroom knowledge often doesn't translate into workplace knowledge and there's no substitute for real world experience.

While I absolutely agree with your overall point... in this guy's defense, there's quite a few different drawing programs out there, and few people are well-versed in all of them.

One of my closest friends was in that boat a few years ago, but I don't think it took him a month to become adept with the new software. He wasn't the wiz-kid he was with other drawing programs when he first started at his present position, though (and it's quite possible some of his work is visible to some of you right now).

The worst offenders are possibly in Information Technology. That stuff all seems simple in the classroom/lab... then the Real World looks nothing like the sterile shit in the lab, where all the applications work so nicely together, and the phone isn't ringing off the hook for keyboard replacements all day. And they never have to crawl under the fat chick's desk with 2 year old rotting food under it in school. Few get the rude awakening that neophyte IT guys do.

Have you tried to have a conversation with today's typical college graduate? Its alarming.
Some of them have no concept of reality! Some of them are so stupid, it makes you call into question the teachers and professors.

I have had contempt for left wing teachers and professors for quite some time now. And with the current crop of graduates from our universities? I feel very justified in my overall contempt.
