Down goes Frazier!
Or should I say he is about to.

I still can remember watching him against Ali in Manila. IMO, it ranked only behind the Miracle on Ice, the Steelers winning their 4 Super Bowls and Aaron hitting 715 as the best sports memories of my childhood.

My all-time favorite fighter. Just wish he'd been bigger, then he really would've killed Ali.

Mine too, loved me some Smokin' Joe and I'm not all that big a fan of boxing. Just something about that little guy going toe to toe with Ali in his prime was heroicVan wrote:My all-time favorite fighter. Just wish he'd been bigger, then he really would've killed Ali.
Re: Down goes Frazier!
Along with Hagler, Hearns, early-career Duran, and even Aaron Pryor, yeah, Frazier was right there. Loved the way he fought.
While talking about his first fight with Frazier in the documentary When We Were Kings (or maybe it was Champions Forever...I'm not sure which), George Foreman made a comment along the lines of, "I was never as afraid of anybody as I was of Joe Frazier. I knew I had to knock him out early because I didn't want him to kill me."
Man, if Joe had been 6'4", 240 lbs...damn.

same here. smokin' joe was my hero as a kid. his wars with ali will never be matched in the ring. one of the toughest sumbitches to ever lace up a pair of gloves. too bad his boy marvin didn't inherit the old man's jaw. i am fairly certain he was unconscious before iron mike ever touched him.
mike tyson against smokin' joe, both in their primes would have been fun to watch.

Marvis Frazier vs Mike Tyson was one of the most lopsided fights I've ever seen. You could almost see the light go off in Marvis' head as he realized that Tyson was going to destroy him.smackaholic wrote:same here. smokin' joe was my hero as a kid. his wars with ali will never be matched in the ring. one of the toughest sumbitches to ever lace up a pair of gloves. too bad his boy marvin didn't inherit the old man's jaw. i am fairly certain he was unconscious before iron mike ever touched him.

Re: Down goes Frazier!
not quite sure i would characterize it as a fight. a fight implies 2 or more dudes throwing down. it was simply iron mike throwing a punch and marvis going nighty night.BSmack wrote:Marvis Frazier vs Mike Tyson was one of the most lopsided fights I've ever seen. I loved watching boxing during the '70s & '80s. So many great fighters in the different weight classes. In addition to those you mentioned, there was Alexis Arguello, Danny "Little Red" Lopez, Hector "Macho" Camacho, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini, Julio Cesar Chavez, Wilfredo Gomez, John Mugabi, Bobby Chacon, Cornelius Boza-Edwards (a fight between those last two one of the best ever, with Chacon winning after having his face severely cut to the point where the fight would've been stopped today), and maybe the greatest ring technician ever, Mexican featherweight Salvador Sanchez, who was killed in a car wreck at age 23. Could have been the best ever given the chance. Even at that young age, he died with a 43-0-1 record.Van wrote:Along with Hagler, Hearns, early-career Duran, and even Aaron Pryor, yeah, Frazier was right there.
Lots of other fighters worthy of mention, too.

Whatever you want to call it, Marvis Frazier went from contender to has been in about 60 seconds.smackaholic wrote:not quite sure i would characterize it as a fight. a fight implies 2 or more dudes throwing down. it was simply iron mike throwing a punch and marvis going nighty night.BSmack wrote:Marvis Frazier vs Mike Tyson was one of the most lopsided fights I've ever seen. Compared to todays fights, that looked like a snuff film.Toddowen wrote:

Also there was no bullshit PPV, I think closed circuit didn't come around until Tyson's early days. I can still remember watching some of Ali's fights on Wide World of Sports with Pops on Sat. afternoons.Smackie Chan wrote:I loved watching boxing during the '70s & '80s. Go Bucs, Gators
Re: Down goes Frazier!
The problem isn't really PPV, as much as the era before had far more fighters that were actually worth paying to see.

Yep. PPV, HBO, Showtime, promoters, and controversial judges have absolutely ruined boxing over the past fifteen years. MMA is definitely on the rise and is taking away viewers from boxing. Although its PPV, the fights seem to never get held up from negotiations and posturing from both parties. As for boxing, Mayweather and Pac-man should be on their second fight right now, but this bartering and posturing is a fucking joke and have ruined the sport entirely.
Of course, if or when an agreement is made more people will tune into that match than any MMA fight for the next decade.

At least Joe had a chance in the ring against Ali....pancreatic cancer, not so much. Hell, he'd live longer being on death row in a Texas prison. Frazier was a good great one and I can remember driving my old car to the top of a hill so we could pick up the Frazier-Ali fights on the radio.

I have to concur about ppv. Once boxing went to the ppv model, I was done with it. I watch very little mma for the same reason. The only sport I will ppv is the NFL with Sunday Ticket. The rest can fuck themselves.

PPV has put a lot of money in the pockets of a few, but, it has been a detriment to the sport. it takes so many prospective fans out of the picture. i suspect that there are good boxers today, but, the problem is, only a handful ofBSmack wrote:I have to concur about ppv. if boxing wants to survive. longterm, it will return to network TV.

Boxing is toast. At best it will be a niche sport. Even if they go back to the days of Friday Night Fights and title bouts being on TV, the market is so fragmented that the best they can do is fight for time with MLS and the Pabst Blue Ribbon Rodeo circuit.smackaholic wrote:PPV has put a lot of money in the pockets of a few, but, it has been a detriment to the sport. it takes so many prospective fans out of the picture. i suspect that there are good boxers today, but, the problem is, only a handful ofchumpshard core fans get to see it. and many of these folks became hardcore fans because they watched ali-frazier on the tube as a kid.

bullshit.
it is currently toast because most fans are priced out. open it to a wide audience and they will come back.

Re: Down goes Frazier!
You hold on to that pipe dream. Back here in the reality based universe boxing is a dying sport. Networks will never try to compete with the kind of purses top fighters demand. Ergo, you won't see top fights on network TV until purses are reduced. And you won't see purses for top fights significantly reduced until after boxing's death spiral has hit critical mass. My guess is that will be in 20 years when the only people left who remember the "golden age" are guys who watched Ali and Frazier fight on Wide World of Sports while parked in our living rooms wearing Evel Knievel pajamas on cold Saturday afternoons as kids.smackaholic wrote:bullshit. it is currently toast because most fans are priced out. open it to a wide audience and they will come back.BSmack wrote:Boxing is toast. Re: Down goes Frazier!
Evel Knievel pajamas??? Mine were Roy Rogers. I remember watching the Friday night fights with my grandpa and seeing some great ones, but haven't been much of a fight fan since my youth. The ppv thing just drove me further away from a sport that held no special interest for me when compared to baseball and football.BSmack wrote:.....parked in our living rooms wearing Evel Knievel pajamas on cold Saturday afternoons as kids.
