I have to say, I really don't think this is accurate. Perhaps this was known in this guy's circle of friends, but I certainly don't think it was common knowledge or that if it were people would have deemed it acceptable. There were rumors that started to get into circulation in recent years - probably because of the investigation, the word started to get out. I think the Grand Jury presentment hit most people like a ton of bricks.

I think the truth is, the PSU community is devastated by all of this. There was always quite a bit of respect for Jerry Sandusky because of the Second Mile. The rumors didn't sound substantive, until last Saturday when the document released basically changed that forever.

Joseph Amendola is a criminal defense attorney. His job is defend people who are charged with crimes. As abhorrent as these charges are, I don't blame Amendola for doing his job.

Mark Madden is a Pittsburgh shock jock who has worked for every radio station in town and been fired from them all over and over. His job is to stir shit up...he's getting a lot of recognition for the moment, but as shutyomouth says, he definitely didn't break this story. I know that you mentioned some book, but I never really knew what you were talking about, nor did I ever claim to have read it. We certainly did not "debate" it. Unsurprisingly, it appears you're confused to just being dishonest. That's ok, that's what you do.

I don't think anyone here throughout the years would find me to be a PSU apologist, or far less a Paterno apologist.

I grew up a PSU and PSU football fan, and that I what I remain. PSU stood for some good things in the minds of many, and even while there is currently a lot of uncertainty about the main participants and their actions, I don't think there is any reason that the high goals have changed or should change.

Even though this transition has been occasioned by some of the most disgusting revelations I have ever taken in, I am still excited for the future of PSU and PSU football. I think it is possible to move away from the old era and the people associated with it. I hope the board of trustees will move ahead decisively in naming a new administration and a new HC, and I hope they make good decisions there.

Are there PSU fans who place(d) Paterno ahead of the program overall? Of course - and at this point, it's hard not to be amazed at their folly. Paterno did much to build PSU's good reputation, and now other will be tasked to take that on and to act sensibly and wisely in pursuit of that goal.

The Grand Jury Testimony counted 8 victims and now that number is up to 11 I believe. That number could rise in the high teens or even in the twenties when the lid is completely off this jar of scandal. My question is, can twenty or so civil lawsuits with an inordinate amount of punitive and compensatory damages bring down the university all together? Will the state government eventually have to step in and fund the crap out of PSU just to keep it afloat?

My second question (football related), what if Penn State is the only B1G school ranked in the top 14 behind the B1G champion? Do you think any bowl will give them an at-large bid?

I think my earlier post needs some clarification. In all small towns (e.g., towns the size of State College, PA), rumors are passed around about prominent members of the community. It is my understanding that it was fairly widely rumored in State College that Jerry Sandusky was a pedophile. Obviously, that is an explosive allegation (as we have seen). And I don't think anyone in State College knew any specific facts that could prove that rumor to be true. It was just something that they said to each other, without any proof, when speaking privately about Jerry Sandusky. I think the Grand Jury report shocked the be-jesus out of everyone in State College, even the ones who had passed or heard the rumor that Jerry Sandusky was a pedophile. I think they thought Sandusky might be attracted to small children in a sexual way. But I do not believe any of them thought he was ass-banging little boys in the PSU showers. The magnitude of the allegations was a total and devastating shock to them.

Well, like I say - I don't know which circle of folks this was. It may well have been known by them. Perhaps I should say here that as late as last Friday, I was very skeptical of the rumors...even though I had definitely seen the report that an investigation was taking place. I made my way through the presentment on Saturday (thanks for ruining my birthday, you sick pedo fuck!! :brad: ) and felt that all remaining doubt had been taken away.

So about the report that Joe has retained counsel - last night Scott Paterno was on twitter denying that report. It was a real mistake for Joe to let his son get involved with this in any way. Joe's two public statements appeared to me to have been written my Scott, who as a son can't be faulted for wanting to help, but he should have known he could easily do his dad more harm than help.

Regarding McQueary - a former fellow player and a friend of his claimed today that we need to wait until he can get a chance to tell his side of this...and when that happens, he will be vindicated. I certainly hope that is truly the case. it is a little much to think that Mike could have walked away from this and only given the HC a watered-down version the next day. Obviously we will have to see on this, but I think it's important to note that the Grand Jury charged Curley and Schultz but did not charge McQueary. I believe that if it were as simple as it seems right now, he would have been charged. He is getting slammed by just about everyone now, and I honestly think the new Prez is keeping him out because of threats, not as a punitive measure.

As for firing Joe - whether some of the facts are unknown or not, it is my opinion that the BOT probably fired him simply because of the statement he gave earlier in the day:

They had to act before that got even further out of control.

I don't mean to be dense, but what possible excuse could McQueary provide for not going to the police when he saw an old man butt-fucking a child in the PSU showers? I tend to agree with your conclusions. As for the last part, while there are exceptions to every rule, state governments tend to be self-insured, and Penn State certainly is an arm of Pennsylvania's state government. Throw in the fact that the state likely will have to indemnify many of the potential individual defendants here (e.g., JoePa, McQueary, Curley, Spanier), and there's a helluva dilemma facing Pennsylvania government officials as to how to pay for the civil end of this. Their likely options (none of them good) . . .

1. Raise taxes;
2. Close or seriously reduce the size of Penn State's campus (which would have far-reaching consequences, with Penn State being the state's flagship public university);
3. Cut services, perhaps to a draconian level, in other areas;
4. Some combination of the above (probably the most likely road they take, given that it probably does the best job of spreading the pain among the state's citizens).

It's not uncommon, under extreme stress or extraordinary situations, people tend to withdraw if the threat isn't to them self. There's probably an element of that involved. It's more likely in women than men though.
