Dinsdale,
It's a thread for things that don't warrant their own thread. Not a thread for tedious, overwrought bullshit.

Other than the line of beers, nothing in that video made me want to visit Portlandia.

Re: A thread for things that don't warrant their own thread
I can sum up Portland with this one story:
I walk into a local brew house near the hotel and order a cheeseburger and fries and a local brew. Beer comes out and is pretty good. I order a second. Before the 2nd beer comes out my burger and fries are delivered. I ask for ketchup. Shocked look appears on the lady's face and she says tomatoes aren't in season. I ask what that has to do with ketchup? Her reply is they only serve locally grown tomatoes and therefore ketchup. I inform her that without the ketchup I don't want my food. She is pissy and acts as if I should know their ketchup schedule. Manager comes over and we go round and round. I hand him a $10 bill and leave.

I'm with Seater on this one. Anyone that makes burgers has a responsibility to provide basic condiments.

For myself, I want more than just "basic" -- like multiple hot sauce/mustard options.Goober McTuber wrote:I'm with Seater on this one. Anyone that makes burgers has a responsibility to provide basic condiments.

That's even better, but apparently this dump couldn't even muster up some ketchup. Isn't ketchup essentially non-perishable? How 'bout this: When local tomatoes are in season and ketchup is produced from them, why not buy enough cases of it to last through when tomatoes aren't in season? Revolutionary, I know.

Re: A thread for things that don't warrant their own thread
I'd imagine you can't get much better than fresh local ketchup but I can understand that it might be a problem when ketchup isn't in season.
That being said, we get tomatoes here all year round, but I still prefer Heinz even though it's made by filthy liberal scum.

Dins, I long ago forgot the name of the place, but it was in the Pearl area.
I agree with the others in that condiments must be provided with a burger, to include good mustard, hot sauce and on occasion a good BBQ sauce. Pickles, onion, lettuce also are a must.

I can't say for sure, but I believe there's only one local ketchup company, and they're very small.Smackie Chan wrote:Isn't ketchup essentially non-perishable? Sounds like some douchey pub in the Pearl* is singlehandedly increasing demand, so they need to ramp up.
* - When I was a young man, the area now called The Pearl was streets full of junkies, and the Henry Weinhard stinky-ass Brewery, and nothing else. Some wealthy developers changed that, and now a shitty little condo is $750K. Sure, it was an unutilized area of downtown, but I'll pass on the ridiculously overpriced housing with shit for parking. There's some celebrities that live there (at least part-time), but they don't care about ridiculous housing prices.

Shame on that dogs owners as well. Here's hoping they were hit with a huge fine in addition to the medical bills.

Any One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest fans here?
They take a little fishing excursion, only to be told "that's the wrong boat," if you remember.
The wrong boat looked just like this:
40-whatever years later, that old heap is still fishing.
Since the rest of the pics of my day on the bounding main weren't very good, I put the one OK one here.
OK, Twin Rocks came out OK.

Oh brother. Can't swing a dead tuna without hitting a haystack rock around here (oddly enough, they seem to always want to name haystack rocks "Haystack Rock," and there's several of them). I wasn't too terribly far from this one:

Next time I'm in the Upper Peninsula I'll do a Pictured Rocks PET. May not be the U&L, but it's a tad nicer than Detroit.
Re: A thread for things that don't warrant their own thread
Ah Stone mountain. I did 4th of July 198something there. Except for the rednecks it was awesome.
Re: A thread for things that don't warrant their own thread
There's one just like it at Cape Kiwanda, right outside Pacific City. Love that place. Lots of hot chicks surfing, and the only bar I know of on the Oregon Coast that's right on the beach (until the next tsunami hits). They make good beer, too (which they're now expanding, so we'll see how long it stay good).Papa Willie wrote: I was thinking that might have been Pacific City, but see that it is not.
One of my favorite places.
I did take a pic out of the window at the joint I was eating at, which was pretty scenic, save for the fat tourists. In Wheeler, about 40 miles north of Cape Kiwanda. The pic looks out across prime salmon water, starting in about a month. A friend has a house 3 blocks up the street from where I'm sitting there (although I was staying with a different friend down there this time).

Wow, there must be at least 3 trees in the "forest" around Half Dome.

Trees grow in soil, not on rocks.Dinsdale wrote:Wow, there must be at least 3 trees in the "forest" around Half Dome.
Tell me you knew.
Re: A thread for things that don't warrant their own thread
Funny stuff.
'Round these parts, trees grow out of cracks in the sidewalk. Trees grow on the rocks in the ocean. The slightest erosion, a tree grabs the silt, and makes soil for more trees. Not much bare earth this side of the mountains.
You're out of your element,Donny Mikey.

We cut through their parking lot yesterday, since the tourists had the traffic fucked up.Papa Willie wrote:Pacific City was nice. We went from Newport up to Tillamook (yes - we did the gay cheese factory tour).
More impressive in Tillamook was the air museum there. Had an Me109 there that I didn't expect as well as a few other things. Practically had the place to ourselves, too...
Lot of other people had it to themselves, too -- probably why if it isn't closed yet, it's about to. Probably the super-badass one in McMinnville, too.
@0 years or so ago, the hangar next door to the one the museum is/was in burned down, which was the largest wood structure ever built (got a metal roof later). Those hangars housed blimps for surveillance over the Pacific during WW2. Interesting WW2 history there, since it was one of a couple "mainland attacks" by the Japanese (which were not "attacks," but ruses to try to manipulate the Navy fleet into moving). The ruses didn't work because all the old codger beachcombers saw them, and opened up with their 30-30's, and made even the fake attack impossible. They actually have (had?) a Springfield Rifle Museum there in tribute to that day.
Cool place, except that cowshit smell when it's not raining (and sometimes when it is). And one of the great fishing destinations known to man (hell, even Derron did a fishing PET there).
And Mikey - Stone Mountain is a rock. http://superbeefy.com/how-did-stone-mou ... the-world/[/quote]

Re: A thread for things that don't warrant their own thread
They had a small museum, they were building the huge one to put the Spruce Goose in at the time. Then after the wars started, Evergreen Aviation was rolling in ridiculous money, and expanded it to multiple buildings, featuring every plane you can imagine. They have a SR71, Titan Missiles, and almost got their hands on a space shuttle. They built an indoor waterpark with slides coming down through a 747, dropping into the building. But now they don't own the skies over the Middle East anymore, and Evergreen went bankrupt... problem being, they were using many of the museum pieces as collateral for their accumulating debt, and now the lienholders want their money -- the Spruce Goose being one of those items. Things went bad in McMinnville quickly, but I believe the museum is still open for now.Papa Willie wrote:This was back in '99 when I went. Didn't know about all the other history there. Very cool. Head about the museum in McMinnville, but didn't get to go to that one. I'm wanting to say that they were in the process of setting up the "Spruce Goose" there at that time? I just remember something being said about that...
