I'd love to see California Chrome pull off the first Triple Crown since 1978 but I doubt it's going to happen. A lot better horses than him (supposedly) have won the Derby and Preakness and came up short at Belmont. 11 of them to be exact.

But if he does win, what a story. This was a bargain basement horse bred for $10,000 - basically chump change for thoroughbred racing. This is a working mans' horse.

But I'm not betting the mortgage payment on him.

My wife has an aunt who is REALLY into her horses. You know where every single one of her horses came from? An owner at Finger Lakes, the Rochester area thoroughbred racing facility, who was about to put the horse down, usually because he can no longer afford to run and feed the poor nag. There are maybe 100 people able to support adopted horses in the Rochester area. Finger Lakes runs hundreds every year with more being foaled every year. The ones that can't support their feed by winning? Let's just say that Mike Vick was kinder to his dogs than the sub humans that traffic horses to Mexico.

The city recently shut down the dog racing here, and are all over the horse track (which makes some dough, since they're one of the very few that run in winter).

My thought is that even for those in the circumstances you suggest, their brief life is infinitely better than that of cattle, swine or fowl bred on a factory farm for the express purpose of becoming a Happy Meal.

WW is right. Now the cattle round here are pasture fed happy fucks until the moment they are stun-gunned to death so they probably have it better than the average nag. But for the most part if you are getting your farmed or ranched protein from higher up the food chain than grubs and crickets you might not want to comment on how horse racing horses are treated.

If a horse isn't abused, then it isn't being trained to race. The abuse comes in the form of the stress and injury to their bodies from the training, not from their owners being mean to them.

True to a point. We have not brought up bull riding or fighting which are surely raised for vice and as I have stated before horses are tasty. In addition we, for the most part, don't need to eat cattle for food. That overeating of beef is a vice. You saw the movie 7 right?

Substitute the words football for racing and players for creatures and you have the reason why I am nowhere near as passionate about the game of football as I used to be. But at least football players are willing participants.

Just to clear something up, then I'll move on. I'm not bitching about horse racing, I was commenting the attitude Wags seems to have, in that once the entertainment is over, the treatment of horses is irrelevant. That's a pretty lousy view of this so called "sport". Personally, when it comes to chicken and cows, they are raised to be slaughtered. While it is very unfortunate that the conditions with which they are raised and kept is so appalling, you have a choice as to whether to eat them or wear them. I like chicken and beef. Like Vincent Vega said, bacon tastes good, pork chops taste good. Free range cattle and chicken do get much better treatment and are far healthier to consume.

About two thirds of race horses, at the end of their day, are forgotten and worse. Brian makes the point about football players, and it isn't an unfair analogy. The significant context though, is that football players choose their life, horses don't. When I wrote that quote about race horses, I wasn't complaining there either, just bringing up WW's nonchalance toward their treatment post-racing. How can you be passionate about the sport, but not give a rats ass about the animals that ARE the sport? At least football players have people and organizations now finally coming to their aid, while it is tragically too late for a lot of these guys. Where is the same caring about race horses?

Wait you want me to feel bad about guys making a cash grab today because they were unsuccessful in life outside of football?

Sorry that isn't going to happen. Show me one example of a player saying I don't think I can play and a team forcing him out onto the field against his will.

Football was far more dangerous back in the day, yet guys still played for damn near nothing. There is this thing called ego and celebrity that most were drunk on.
