Belmont Stakes
I'd love to see California Chrome pull off the first Triple Crown since 1978 but I doubt it's going to happen. A lot better horses than him (supposedly) have won the Derby and Preakness and came up short at Belmont. 11 of them to be exact.
But if he does win, what a story. This was a bargain basement horse bred for $10,000 - basically chump change for thoroughbred racing. This is a working mans' horse.
But I'm not betting the mortgage payment on him.

I enjoy horse racing and this is a chance to watch history.

Love the name. California Chrome. But horse racing sucks. And it's cruel.

Horse breeding will never be the same in Los Alamos after CC run this season...

Not a hockey fan but the game right after the horse race was pretty good.

Horse racing is the most "American" of all domestic sports. It's a throwback to the days before unions and free agency corrupted baseball, for example. These wealthy owners purchase and breed these filthy animals, pump them pull of shit (sup Ken?), run them into the ground, and when they have extracted every single penny of winnings out of these horses, they do what would make Donald Sterling proud: they put them to fucking death.MgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote: The "sport" is disgusting.

He's not even slightly trolling. Even if one accepts your idea that the top horses are "pampered," then what happens to the other million or so nags that are born every year?

Jsc failed in having them aborted? No?
They live, hopefully a happy life. Then they die. Hopefully, painlessly. Just like any other creature on Gods' green Earth.
Or is it your take that they would've been better off never to have been born at all?
If that's the case, see Jsc crack above.

Re: Belmont Stakes
Wags,
My wife has an aunt who is REALLY into her horses. You know where every single one of her horses came from? An owner at Finger Lakes, the Rochester area thoroughbred racing facility, who was about to put the horse down, usually because he can no longer afford to run and feed the poor nag. There are maybe 100 people able to support adopted horses in the Rochester area. Finger Lakes runs hundreds every year with more being foaled every year. The ones that can't support their feed by winning? Let's just say that Mike Vick was kinder to his dogs than the sub humans that traffic horses to Mexico.

And the horse farms are the ASPCA compared to dog racers.
The city recently shut down the dog racing here, and are all over the horse track (which makes some dough, since they're one of the very few that run in winter).

So what?
My thought is that even for those in the circumstances you suggest, their brief life is infinitely better than that of cattle, swine or fowl bred on a factory farm for the express purpose of becoming a Happy Meal.
Unless you're a complete vegan, don't act so offended.

Re: Belmont Stakes
WW is right. Now the cattle round here are pasture fed happy fucks until the moment they are stun-gunned to death so they probably have it better than the average nag. But for the most part if you are getting your farmed or ranched protein from higher up the food chain than grubs and crickets you might not want to comment on how horse racing horses are treated.

Re: Belmont Stakes
Wags and MS, your opinions here are shockingly offensive.
Sure, race horses are groomed and treated like royalty, up until they are no longer useful. Then, for the most part, they are treated like insects, forgotten, left to rot or slaughtered like chickens.
Wags, you glorify their "brief life" as infinitely better" than cattle, pig or chicken. In this you're right. But their after use treatment is horrible and your dismissal of it is hypocritical. I'm no vegan, but you saying "so what" reveals your seeming love of horse racing as superficial and false. Would you embrace your own daughter being pampered and fed and treated as royalty to only be tortured, killed by a hammer blow to her forehead then skinned and slaughtered for meat and clothing?
Yeah, yeah, big difference between animal and human...until it isn't. My point being, you love racing, but seem to care less about the creatures that entertain you, and what happens to them when the party is over.
Moving Sale...dude, cows are not happy fucks in any way, shape or form. These poor fucking creatures are treated like slaves, tortured, over-fed and abused, over-crowded and finally blunted to death in horrific fashion.
They also make great coats and saddles and taste delicious on the grill.
Horses...not so much.

Yes they are slaughtered like chickens. And if you eat chicken you might not want to bitch about horse racing.Jay in Phoenix wrote: Sure, race horses are groomed and treated like royalty, up until they are no longer useful. I said the ones around here are happy and they are. I know lots of ranchers around here and they range fed on thousands of acres in good weather till they zap them. In fact the weather is so good that the meat doesn't even marble as well as Midwest beef. Are most cattle abused from day one? Probably but not around here. And horse is tasty and makes great hides. So to summarize, most cattle are abused and some are not and the same for race horses.Moving Sale...dude, cows are not happy fucks in any way, shape or form. Cattle are raised for man's nourishment, not man's vice. And I don't believe that "most" are abused, anyhow. So to summarize, most cattle are abused and some are not and the same for race horses.
If a horse isn't abused, then it isn't being trained to race. The abuse comes in the form of the stress and injury to their bodies from the training, not from their owners being mean to them.
Wags, you have a very warped view of life. I will pray for you tonight.
Re: Belmont Stakes
True to a point. We have not brought up bull riding or fighting which are surely raised for vice and as I have stated before horses are tasty. In addition we, for the most part, don't need to eat cattle for food. That overeating of beef is a vice. You saw the movie 7 right?MgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:

I do, but I have no way to prove it. What would you put the number at?And I don't believe that "most" are abused, anyhow.
So you think all race horses are abused? I guess there is an argument to be made for that. Not sure how it is not mean to abuse them but that aside, there can not be an argument made that the big time studs work for a few years and then live it up in nice pastures with very little stress. The abuse comes in the form of the stress and injury to their bodies from the training, not from their owners being mean to them.

Re: Belmont Stakes
Just to clear something up, then I'll move on. I'm not bitching about horse racing, I was commenting the attitude Wags seems to have, in that once the entertainment is over, the treatment of horses is irrelevant. That's a pretty lousy view of this so called "sport". Personally, when it comes to chicken and cows, they are raised to be slaughtered. While it is very unfortunate that the conditions with which they are raised and kept is so appalling, you have a choice as to whether to eat them or wear them. I like chicken and beef. Like Vincent Vega said, bacon tastes good, pork chops taste good. While the treatment of these animals on most farms is sad, not to mention the crap they are fed and is passed on to us, I'm not complaining about it, at least as far as their treatment is concerned. Leave that to PETA. The additives on the other hand...much different story, for a different thread.Moving Sale wrote:Yes they are slaughtered like chickens. And if you eat chicken you might not want to bitch about horse racing.
The discussion centered around race horses however. Not the same thing, so you can't compare them and make the same argument.
Free range cattle and chicken do get much better treatment and are far healthier to consume.I said the ones around here are happy and they are. I know lots of ranchers around here and they range fed on thousands of acres in good weather till they zap them. In fact the weather is so good that the meat doesn't even marble as well as Midwest beef. Are most cattle abused from day one? Probably but not around here. And horse is tasty and makes great hides. So to summarize, most cattle are abused and some are not and the same for race horses.
About two thirds of race horses, at the end of their day, are forgotten and worse. Brian makes the point about football players, and it isn't an unfair analogy. The significant context though, is that football players choose their life, horses don't. When I wrote that quote about race horses, I wasn't complaining there either, just bringing up WW's nonchalance toward their treatment post-racing. How can you be passionate about the sport, but not give a rats ass about the animals that ARE the sport? At least football players have people and organizations now finally coming to their aid, while it is tragically too late for a lot of these guys. Where is the same caring about race horses?
Care or don't care, but don't be a hypocrite.

Sorry that isn't going to happen. Show me one example of a player saying I don't think I can play and a team forcing him out onto the field against his will.
Football was far more dangerous back in the day, yet guys still played for damn near nothing. There is this thing called ego and celebrity that most were drunk on.
