Now we have illegals streaming in from South America. On top of all the middle eastern refugees that have been streaming in for years.

The USA is a big place, why do they all come to Calif?

I was watching the match on CBC. Because they are not ESPN. They did a segment about Canada's last WC appearance. 3 games, 0 goals. Kind of puts our squad and their troubles into perspective.

Reality = the players are trotting around a good deal of the time.

Hell, I've already said that a person has to be fit to play soccer well.
It's not an easy sport and it's also more physical than many Americans realize.

It's not ping pong. Tennis, as well as soccer, are both grueling sports. Of the two, tennis played at the highest level is infinitely more watchable.

Radio Fan and I had a back-and-forth on tennis v. soccer a few years back.
I won't replay it all here, but I will say that tennis is extremely difficult to play well.
It is a skill sport and those skills are difficult to master.
The TV guys make it look deceptively easy.
It is also extremely demanding, physically, if you're playing at a high level.

Mvscal noted that a soccer player can not leave the game.

Neither can a tennis player.
Once you're in the arena, you can't leave it.
If you're playing poorly, or you're tired, or you're feeling ill... tough nuts.
You can't take a seat.
You stay, try to hang in there, and try to work your way through it without getting pounded.

Yes, because you've got NO help.
No teammates to pick you up.

It's demanding, physically and mentally.
If you're off your game, you're going to get your ass kicked, almost certainly.

Every sport played at the highest level is physically and mentally demanding. Some more mental than physical, and vice versa, but all of them are such that your average joe could not compete. Global interest? That's not the point.

Looking at it from a purely sports angle, most global interest is contrived and the only people who really care are those who still have a dog in the hunt. Do you really care enough to watch who wins a 1-0 game between Argentina and Belgium? Probably not.

And while you may not care who won an epic 4 hour tennis match at Wimbleton, trust me when I say it was more watchable.

When you're out of the country, you get a different perspective on America.
Just looking at the major media outlets, and how they treat the World Cup, it is evident that there is a full court press to pump it up and make it something glorious.

This is just my take, and I don't have proof for it, but I suspect that this is just the "global elites" (who run the media) trying to condition the American to "join the world."

"Soccer is wonderful" has been the overriding narrative they've pushed -- and the amount of "front page" coverage it's gotten doesn't reflect the true interest it has with the American people.

It's by far the most popular sport with the people here.
Tennis is about 4th or 5th.

It would be like if all of a sudden the Korean media decided to pimp Wimbledon for 14 days straight.

It's an untapped market. Just imagine if FIFA bent over and allowed broadcast networks to whore out soccer games with commercial breaks every 10 minutes. It would immediately become the US' top spectator sport.

Not without significant rule changes. A lot of people (who know nothing) say soccer is hockey on grass. That isn't a bad idea necessarily. Implement unlimited substitutions, rework the offsides rule to mirror hockey and change yellow and red card penalties to minor and major penalties to create a man advantage "power play" for certain periods of time.

It wouldn't be exactly the same thing, but it would speed up the game and create a little more scoring.

Not really, that take is pretty overblown. At least at the WC level. I don't watch MLS or Premier League.

In any event, the very fact someone can theoretically "fake" injuries with any degree of regularity just proves how physical the sport is. It happens in football as well for strategic purposes, and I presume you don't consider that a "pussy" sport.

One of Brazil's key players just broke his back in a game. That ain't happening in tennis.
