Discussion potential - your conference's all century team

Post by The Seer »

Pac 12 network came up with their own to mark the 100 year anniversary for the Pac. Not in agreement with a lot of the choices but obviously some talent listed. It always seems they put a lot of stock in how well players did in the league as well as in college.

This.

What is the point of doing a CFB list if it is based on what they did in the League. Perfect example is that Florida State QB that didn't even go to a camp with an NFL team. He chose instead to play in the Association.

He did kinda win one of those Heisman thingies -- couldn't have sucked too bad.

I suppose you'd have to make four lists (Missouri Valley, SWC, C-USA, AAC) if you're Houston.

As far as SWC, the only player from Houston who definitely makes the list is Wilson Whitley. Other than that, there really is no one else who is deserving. I suppose you could make and argument for Klingler or Ware, but I wouldn't be shocked if they were left off.

C-USA - Keenum and Sebastian Volmer are no doubt first teamers. I'd give the nod for Patrick Edwards to line up with Rice's Jared Dillard and James Casey as the WR/TE combo.

AAC - it's WAY too early to make an all-time list.

Nothing wrong with considering overall team success, especially when discussing QBs...

but did you read the list?

Look at the players Peete and Leinert had around them, compared to others.

BTW -- I believe USC has only had one offensive lineman named as the team's Offensive MVP.

And his name was neither Anthony Munoz or Tony Boselli. So maybe there is something to the "too much emphasis on what they did in the NFL" thing.

he was 20-23 at Stanford in 4 years and never to a bowl. so, not "even" winning a Pac title seems a bit of a straw man argument that relies on exaggeration for effect.

for a little local/homer color and history...

he did beat OU in Norman as a FR or Soph. i was there, raining like mofo. of course, OU peeps we thought the forward pass was only slightly less manly than cheating back then.

http://soonerstats.com/football/games/b ... mM9KlWrTnA

that Sooner team started #4 and finished #3 beating a Bobby Bowden FSU team in the Orange Bowl that, had FSU won, would have won the MNC. pretty good scalp for the young Elway....who was pretty damned freakish to see even back then. maybe only Lawrence Taylor compared as a player i saw in person as a visitor to Norman who was kind of on another planet on a lesser team. though UNC was in the top 10 when they came to Norman (and got waxed by OU after talking a lot of shit, it was LT ya know....lotta shit, lotta personal fouls).

i think John McKay is wildly under-appreciated by sports fans because of the Tampa Bay NFL expansion.

he's a top tier all-time college coach. he won 3 MNC's.

i thought this was funny on the McKay wiki:

"After receiving harsh criticism from the media about McKay's coaching skills in the NFL, McKay replies "You guys don't know the difference between a football and a bunch of bananas." In the next interview, members of the media left bananas for McKay. He then replied, "You guys don't know the difference between a football and a Mercedes Benz."

He was also a hero in WW2. Seems like people forget that about him.

He also went... Quack Quack.

i din't know he was a UO guy. hooray.

all that said. i'm on the what they did as a college guy list. Rodney Peete was the greatest to me if he's winning games for USC.

Tommie Frazer. Steve Davis. Troy Davis. Jimmie Harris.

BTPCF.

What kind of drugs are you on, musc2?

Peete's glorious four year career at SC (freshman year he played about 33% of the time):

1985 (6-6) lost to Alabama in the Aloha Bowl - finished unranked
1986 (7-5) lost to Auburn in the Citrus Bowl - finished unranked
1987 (8-4) lost to Michigan State in the Rose Bowl - 18th in final AP Poll
1988 (10-2) lost to Michigan in the Rose Bowl - 7th in final AP Poll

Decent QB on a pretty good team (sub-par by USC "standards")
Went to two Rose Bowls but never won a bowl game.

Not exactly all-century material.

WRONG.

At best he one on title that no one recognizes since the BCS was in place. SC is the only one who claims that title.

In fact Leinart lost the last 15 games he started.
