While that's true, these were built probably more than 50 years ago and were about 100 feet from the cliff at the time. It's not a secret that these cliffs erode over time, and that was probably taken into account when they were built. The original developers made their money years ago and left. The people living there now have probably known that they would eventually have to vacate and are probably getting a decent deal for an ocean view. Somebody's going to have to clean up the mess though, and create some new ocean front property for the next round of developers.

Either that or the Coastal Commission will prohibit anybody from building there again.

Okay I'll bite. Where's south of San Fran not "south" ? I drove north on I-5 from Chula Vista to the Oregon border. Must have missed the sign that said, "You Are Now Leaving SoCal". It's south enough for me. Just one man's opinion.

And it's low information voters like wolftard complaining about "zoning protocols" at fault for allowing development too close to the cliffs, who are the same ones who will turn around and bitch about rampant over regulation when the Coastal Commission won't allow developers and landowners to build wherever and whenever they want to.

I hitchhiked out of the Marble Mountains. My complete rows of teeth made me a carnival attraction. I was particularly impressed with the locals repackaging Hamburger Helper as Spotted Owl Helper.

Medford and Ashalnd, and to an extent Redding, are somewhat civilized (Medford is actually a pretty cool city... if you like heat). Once one leaves those enclaves, the sound of dueling banjoes fills the air, which is often drowned out by chainsaws.

On our vacation roadie a number of years back that was pretty much a CCW lap around Cali and Oregon, we developed an appreciation for the neckness of Cali once you get outside the cities and away from the coast. I have driven through rural SEC country and it has nothing on rural Cali or OR but there is one place that beats them all IMO. central PA.

As for where "NorCal" starts, it would seem that SF would be a proper border. Everything below SF and above LA would be cencal, LA on south, socal. But apparently you calis say that SF is nocal. I guess it's your state, so you guys get to make the rules.

Where does nocal start then? Monterrey?

Pretty much. Probably San Jose, Santa Cruz on the coast - the Bay Area is all NoCal.

Monterey is at the northern end of the Salinas Valley, which geographically, historically and culturally makes it Central California.

BTW, if you've ever seen East of Eden (if you haven't you should), it took place in the Salinas Valley. A lot of the outdoor scenes were filmed in Mendocino, about 250 miles north (real Northern California).

Depends which Cali you talk to, as socal's link alludes to.

But I believe most people consider CenCal to be the Central Valley (Sacramento/San Joaquin valleys).

"Most people" don't know WTF they're talking about.

The Central Valley and Central California are two different animals, though not mutually exclusive. It's more of a north/south thing than an east/west thing.

There's probably not a legal definition but the coast from SLO to Monterey would be considered the Central Coast. Maybe as far south as Santa Barbara or even San Buenaventura.

The 3 regions of California aren't really linear, but gray area border counties.

Northern Cal is pretty much the top of Monterey County, Merced Co, to the bottom of Mono Co heading toward Nevada.

Southern Cal is pretty much below San Luis Obispo county along the bottom of Kern County then the top half of San Bernardino Co to Nevada.

The Ft. Tejon Pass (4,144 ft) on the I-5 is pretty much the border between Central and Southern Cal.

Then there is LoCal, which is a subset of SoCal.

This isn't like dissecting the State of Kansas into 3 parts.

I thought the same thing driving back to DC from Crapchester after Christmas. Counted three Confederate flags on the stretch between Harrisburg and the NY/PA line along US 15. Might be one of the most depressing drives in the US, though some of the elevated stretch and stretch along a river is sort of nice.

Also, I was struck with how many truck stop porn shop and titty bars were along US 15. I would NOT want to see the women in those titty bars.

Anyone that has ever done the I-80 trek across PA likely had to stop at least once for gas and possibly suspension work (worst interstates on the planet) can attest to the veracity of the statements made here about this place.

There are plenty of run down depressed places in upstate NY and New England. These places at least had glorious pasts when they had were manufacturing hubs. You see it in the old victorians and huge, mills/factories. These places are "has beens". CenPA on the other hand looks like a "never was".

Damn fine place to hunt white tail, though. On our last trip across I-80, must have seen 50 white tail roadkill and prolly 2-3 hundred still on the hoof. I suspect the average cen PA neck has a venison rich diet. I would venture to guess that the majority of their caloric intake is venison/mountain dew.

They've spent a few dollars. Not just the boulders to absord the waves, the building on the right. I thought that was a slab from an old parking lot accordianed over the side, hanging from rebar. It's an old buttress.

Central PA is just an extension of Appalachia with a little bit less of the Jesus freakery mixed in. WV, Western VA, East Tennessee, East Kentucky, South East Ohio. All the same basic white trash mix.
