Stanford Found Guilty of Major NCAA Infractions

This once squeaky-clean athletics program has now been found guilty of two major Level II violations.

One of the violations involved the 20 hour participation rules in softball. The other one involved the football team:
NCAA issued a public reprimand and fined the Cardinal $5,000. There are no other sanctions from the NCAA, athletic director Bernard Muir said, although Stanford self-imposed several penalties.

“Many in the community will be pretty disappointed, including myself,’’ Muir said. “We care not only about winning championships, but we also want to do it the right way.

“We didn’t have the proper oversight necessary to make sure we were in compliance.”

The football program’s transgression involved former receiver Devon Cajuste accepting impermissible benefits of approximately $3,400 in the Cardinal’s summer off-campus housing program.

Cajuste received $400 for meals and movie tickets and a $3,000 loan (for a bike) that had been repaid when the violations were discovered, according to Stanford.

Stanford has since ended the program, which was approved by the NCAA at the time it was created in 2007.

“I am the student-athlete involved in the violation,” Cajuste said in a statement. “I unknowingly accepted impermissible benefits from my summer landlord. I look forward to moving on from this incident and to supporting my alma mater for many years to come.”
Though Stanford self-reported these violations in 2014 they are truly major infractions. I'm just hoping they don't lose any bowl eligibility or scholarships.

Didn't say they weren't cheating. They're just smart enough not to get caught.

Also smart enough not to recruit too many morons who will commit violent felonies while enrolled.

3000$ for a bike is a lot. i bought a 3 year old CAAD frame Cannondale a few years back in Boulder for about 700$. frame won a stage of the Tour de France. good road bike. i rarely ride it....i'm a commuter mostly. 250$ used bike around town. 3 g's is Italian high end stuff.

i've always wondered about how things go at Stanford....not the end of the world. i know Vandy fans (some of them) were relieved a bit when Franklin left. fwiw. but, being the whipping post for the SEC used to be cute, niche.....people want different things now....and athletic success is a big recruiting tool these days. at every level. kids wanna see themselves rushing the field/court like they see on TV....part of marketing the college experience. when i went to Vandy, a friend of mine plausibly walked on to the baseball team...they were terrible. today, they have been regional #1 NCAA seeds.

doesn't seem like the biggest deal ever for Stanford. i was sorta pulling for Johnny Dawkins though....i might have waited another season on that. just to go OT.

Yeah, sort of.
First time they've ever been sanctioned by the NCAA for anything. They fired the softball coach and suspended the entire staff for practicing more than 20 hours per week.

Unfortunately there was no national championship or Heisman to take away.
