OK all you gun nuts
A friend of friend of a family member has a gun they might be looking to off-load. A 1939 Luger. So far, condition unknown. I always thought that was one of the prettiest handguns ever made, and would love to own one, assuming it's functional. Anyone have any useful feedback?

Get the Luger, assuming it's functional.
Find Arch.
Put him out of his misery.

Are we to assume that it has Nazi insignia on it? If so, and it’s in good condition, yes, it is a collector piece and worth anywhere from $700 to $Big Bucks. Just don’t shoot it, although there’s no functional reason you can’t. It just devalues the gun.

Is it the Parabellum?
That is a cool looking gun. Good luck!
I hope it is functional and you accidentally shoot yourself with it.

Awesome collector's item. Might be worth a couple of grand, depending on condition, of course. As far as a functional firearm goes... piece of junk. That hinged slide thingy is ridiculous.
Interesting fact -- at the beginning of the 20th Century, the German military was looking to buy a shit-ton of those newfangled autoloader pistols. Several companies submitted designs, and were vying for the contract. In their rush to get enough into production to complete the first run, they fucked up big time -- it was supposed to be chambered for the existing 7.65 cartridge, but some people along the way screwed the pooch, and totally fucked up some dimensions. They were so far into the process, it was easier at that point to just design a round to fit the gun, which they did.
And the 9x19MM round is by far the most common handgun round in use today.

I got 99 problems but the 'vid ain't one

Most serious or semi serious gun collectors have one. Interesting design, friend has one, shot it a couple times meh...the prices Dins mentioned seem in the ball park depending on condition.

Define "better".
Need to knock some mofo down, right fukking now and make him extremely aware he's been shot?
1911, all day.
Like to shoot frequently and you don't have a trust fund?
9mm.
Wanna shoot a lotta fukking rounds without reloading?
that's another for the 9mm.
And if you gotta carry your ammo?
9mm much lighter.
And all other things being equal, you'll get a little better accuracy.
I used to Listen to G.G. Liddy when he had his radio program and he's was always going on and on about the Pope being the posterchild for the 9mm being inferior. Dude took a chestful of 9 mil at near point blank range and Jesus kept him around another decade or two. Said he'd a been one dead ass Papa has the guy been carrying a 1911.
