It was probably Bolton, who's been itching to bomb Iran for years (along with a few Senators like Cotton) and possibly Pompeo, who convinced Trump to launch the strike. Trump's reason for then calling it off is that he later asked if there would be any casualties. When told that it would probably be 150 or more he decided that the response was not proportional. But we are still "cocked and loaded" . Wonder why he wasn't informed about the probably casualties before launching in the first place. I guess he's just not that detail oriented.

I think Trump made the right decision to call the planes back. We need to respond somehow, but launching a major strike with scores of casualties in response to shooting down an unmanned drone would be a major escalation. probably leading to subsequent overreactions by both sides and rest of the ME. Just exactly what Bolton and his warmonger cronies would love to see. These guys need to die in an ugly mustache fire.

Osama had it coming to him. But Al-Waliki and his son, both US citizens? No. At the very least a public trial in absentia should have been held and if found guilty and then given a death sentence, then drone him. As it was, even if Al-Waliki was deserving of death, his son was innocent.

But you're forgetting, the US has no credibility on that point. That was done to the DPRK under Clinton and you simply reneged. The deal was worked, signed and the cash wasn't delivered. The light water reactors were never built, so the heavy water reactors were switched back on. Iran still exists in the abstract 'Axis of Evil' alongside the DPRK, they're not stupid.

Interesting to see the 'sanctions' flag being tarried, despite being morally reprehensible to any thinking person. Using food as a weapon is the height of perversity. And practically, they don't work and have never worked - it's futile.
