I've got nothing against smoking weed OR surfing, per se, as long as it doesn't get in the way. I was just making an example. God and gOD knows I did plenty of both (OK I spent the equivalent of probably a couple of years on a Boogie Board or treading water wearing Duck Feet). The golfing at Torrey Pines was pretty excellent as well. And it took me seven years to get through UCSD with an ME and Controls Systems degree, but I did it. It has an excellent engineering school, even back then. But TBH I picked it because of the location. My mother and her father were both born in San Diego and we used to come down every summer for vacation.

I always thought you just went down there to go to school. Didn't know the family relationship.

One of the good things about the Bay Area and Northern California. Wildfires in the winter are literally impossible. Not only does it rain, the hills around here have grass and it looks like Ireland in some respects as you well know.

Mom and Dad met at Stanford. She was from San Diego. He went to Lincoln HS in "Frisco." They were living in Parkmerced when I was born. Stanford wouldn't take me - probably from smoking too much weed and too much time on the golf course. I did get accepted at Berkeley and UCSD, and decided on Black's Beach. UC was much easier to get into back then.

This is the house on Bush Street in San Diego that my great grandfather and his two sons built in 1914. It's still there, and now worth a couple of $ million plus. I have a bunch of pictures from when it was being built. One of these days I plan on going down there and knocking on the door to ask if they want copies.

Was listening to someone on the I terwebs who was socal born and bred who said that in the 70s the hillsides had all sorts of firebreaks cut into them. But at some point the environmentalists or maybe power company accountants who looked at firebreak maintenance as an unnecessary cost, brought a lot of it to a stop.

Who wants to look at all those unsightly firebreaks anyway?

They’ve been burying a lot of the power lines over the past ten years. People complain about the cost of electricity in California but hardening and/or burying them is not cheap. Frankly, the utilities love doing this and here’s why. In our fucked up utility space, the three major Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs) - PG&E, SCE and SDGE - are guaranteed a profit of around 10%. But that’s not from selling electricity. They are only allowed to pass through to their ratepayers the cost for generating or purchasing the electricity that they supply. Their profit is based on capital investment. Building and maintaining the infrastructure and of course operating costs. They submit a rate case to the PUC based on predicted sales and expenditures, and that’s what the rates are based on. So, the more they spend the more they make. Makes sense, right? Ever wonder why they love building huge solar farms in the desert and 500 kV transmission lines to move that power, but fight tooth and nail against rooftop PV while constantly trying to greenwash their public image?

There have been economic studies that show Public Safety Power Shutdowns are more effective and cheaper than burying the power lines. Ratepayers don’t like having their power shut off but also don’t want expensive power bills. The utilities are fine either way with their guaranteed profits. Their biggest concern is maximizing shareholder profits. Ratepayer satisfaction is way down the list.

Who were the moronic local politicians who allowed the PP area to become so high-density that they couldn't evacuate the area w/or major traffic jams nor could they maintain a water system that can provide a sufficient enough supply of water, even during times of obligatory maintenance downtimes?

A granddaughter and her husband, living in Encino have evacuated and moved to safety with friends in a safer area. I thought it was being contained.
