Rack!
Except the part about smoking weed and surfing.
I had a couple of friends I used to go surfing with in high school that smoked weed (sold it as well as other shit).
Brian became a chemical engineer. Went to UCSD which you know well. He got into Cal as well as me. But, said he was going to UC down there because it was a better school for chemical engineering. I just believed him because I didn't know or really care. Maybe you can enlighten me.
And Mark. Who ended up becoming a doctor.
Seer and Diego are just losers and it really doesn't have to be due to smoking pot and surfing. Just wanted to clarify (protect) something I love (surfing) and don't wanted it grouped in with those losers.
Other than that, you're spot on.
I've got nothing against smoking weed OR surfing, per se, as long as it doesn't get in the way. I was just making an example. God and gOD knows I did plenty of both (OK I spent the equivalent of probably a couple of years on a Boogie Board or treading water wearing Duck Feet). The golfing at Torrey Pines was pretty excellent as well. And it took me seven years to get through UCSD with an ME and Controls Systems degree, but I did it. It has an excellent engineering school, even back then. But TBH I picked it because of the location. My mother and her father were both born in San Diego and we used to come down every summer for vacation.
I always thought you just went down there to go to school. Didn't know the family relationship.
One of the good things about the Bay Area and Northern California. Wildfires in the winter are literally impossible. Not only does it rain, the hills around here have grass and it looks like Ireland in some respects as you well know.
Mom and Dad met at Stanford. She was from San Diego. He went to Lincoln HS in "Frisco." They were living in Parkmerced when I was born. Stanford wouldn't take me - probably from smoking too much weed and too much time on the golf course. I did get accepted at Berkeley and UCSD, and decided on Black's Beach. UC was much easier to get into back then.
This is the house on Bush Street in San Diego that my great grandfather and his two sons built in 1914. It's still there, and now worth a couple of $ million plus. I have a bunch of pictures from when it was being built. One of these days I plan on going down there and knocking on the door to ask if they want copies.

I get a kick out of Diego or whoever the lefty incompetence apologist was who said these fires happen because the climate change induced winds are blowing trees into the lines.
Let’s just go ahead and give you that maybe these winds are worse due to Republicans burning too much carbon.
So WTF are you gonna do about it other than cry about getting to carbon neutrality.
You do realize that in some places, they bury power lines.
In other places they cut down trees that pose a threat.
Is that not a thing in Cali?
We know where the fault lines are, so maybe we go above ground there. Maybe we keep everything in the air and simply chop down trees near them.
Was listening to someone on the I terwebs who was socal born and bred who said that in the 70s the hillsides had all sorts of firebreaks cut into them. But at some point the environmentalists or maybe power company accountants who looked at firebreak maintenance as an unnecessary cost, brought a lot of it to a stop.
Who wants to look at all those unsightly firebreaks anyway?

Fuck'em. I had friends that went there and wish they'd gone to Cal. Of course, they stayed for 4 years
Too funny.
Not much diversity and they live in a bubble on campus there. That's why they are so ill-equipped when they get out of school to deal with the real world. They just expect to get a job for $150,000 a year when they get out of school and not have to work. Entitled fucks.
Funny story. When I went in to talk about getting financial aid at Cal freshman year. The lady looked at me and said "You're smart, you got into Cal. You figure it out".
I told my friend that went to furd about it. He started laughing and said when he went in looking for aid. The woman told him. "Which package would you like'?" Spoiled fucks.
Too funny.

They’ve been burying a lot of the power lines over the past ten years. People complain about the cost of electricity in California but hardening and/or burying them is not cheap. Frankly, the utilities love doing this and here’s why. In our fucked up utility space, the three major Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs) - PG&E, SCE and SDGE - are guaranteed a profit of around 10%. But that’s not from selling electricity. They are only allowed to pass through to their ratepayers the cost for generating or purchasing the electricity that they supply. Their profit is based on capital investment. Building and maintaining the infrastructure and of course operating costs. They submit a rate case to the PUC based on predicted sales and expenditures, and that’s what the rates are based on. So, the more they spend the more they make. Makes sense, right? Ever wonder why they love building huge solar farms in the desert and 500 kV transmission lines to move that power, but fight tooth and nail against rooftop PV while constantly trying to greenwash their public image?
There have been economic studies that show Public Safety Power Shutdowns are more effective and cheaper than burying the power lines. Ratepayers don’t like having their power shut off but also don’t want expensive power bills. The utilities are fine either way with their guaranteed profits. Their biggest concern is maximizing shareholder profits. Ratepayer satisfaction is way down the list.

So you ran away like a sniveling little cunt. Color me surprised.
Maybe just fake news (again), but leaving Calif. seems to have been a "thing" for some time now. Wonder why.....
This reminds me of all the idiot "libs" promising to leave the country if Republicans are elected. The only difference between them and you is that you actually cut and ran.
There are "Leaving California" groups on Facebook with thousands talking about leaving for Texas or Florida or Tennessee or some other shithole. Some people leave because of employment, some leave because of family. Legitimate reasons. A lot of them just talk about how much they hate Newsome and how California is so "blue" that they can't stand it anymore. What a weak fucking excuse.
Granted, it's just one data point, but I have a coworker who resided in California for many years and couldn't stand the liberalism/govt. any longer. An opportunity to move to a different position in the company that would take him to virtually anywhere he wanted in the mid-Atlantic popped up. He and his wife jumped all over it. Moved his family out to PA and he has zero regrets.

65° and crystal clear with 3 mph winds in The City right now.
Got close to 80° in the Bay area today. 77° in Santa Rosa.
Northern California having the most disastrous wildfires in California history.

If Climate change is such a driver on these fires, and it isn't going away, where is the spending on mitigating these risks? Didn't CA recently say they ran a surplus over the last budget year?
88 makes a good point, if DEI is such a fantastic idea, where are the wins or benefits of that initiative in this situation? I did see someone related to the LAFD or county FD saying that if she had to resuce someone's husband, that husband put themselves in a bad situation. If this is true, it is horrible.
Mikey, didn't the state allocate millions toward new water storage 6-8 years ago? Your point about where to put it seems like a valid one, but wasn't that considered when allocating the funds?
Finally, the mayor pulling a Ted Cruz is horrible. But the citizens still have the ability to not re-elect her, unilke my fellow Texans.

State to probe why Pacific Palisades reservoir was offline, empty when firestorm exploded
A large reservoir in Pacific Palisades that is part of the Los Angeles water supply system was out of commission when a ferocious wildfire destroyed thousands of homes and other structures nearby, the Los Angeles Times found.
Officials said that the Santa Ynez Reservoir had been closed since about February for repairs to its cover, leaving a 117-million-gallon water storage complex empty in the heart of the Palisades for nearly a year.
The revelation comes amid growing questions about why firefighters ran out of water while battling the blaze, which ignited Tuesday during catastrophically high winds. The Times reported early Wednesday that numerous fire hydrants in higher-elevation streets of the Palisades went dry, leaving crews struggling with low water pressure as they combated the flames.
Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday ordered an independent investigation of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power over the loss of water pressure and the empty Santa Ynez Reservoir, calling it “deeply troubling.”

At one time this was considered to be the wildfire "off-season." Now that, thanks to what you Republicans call a "hoax," there is no off-season. So go ahead tell us Mr California Wildfire Expert....when should reservoirs be taken offline to perform necessary maintenance?

Who were the moronic local politicians who allowed the PP area to become so high-density that they couldn't evacuate the area w/or major traffic jams nor could they maintain a water system that can provide a sufficient enough supply of water, even during times of obligatory maintenance downtimes?
