You Cali's fascinate, but it's like a terrible experiment gone horribly wrong. 49 other States sit back and wonder just what in fuck is wrong with you. How did this happen?

And then I listen to something like this from the Chili Peppers and i sorta' understand.

Not sure what you meant with the Californication mention/explanation but thanks anyway for the link. It's been a long time since I've heard that one. RHCP might be the only semi-recent band I actually like, among bands with vocals; especially male vocals.

Damn good band. Thanks.

Absolutely, positively couldn't freaking stand them for the longest time. Somehow, they grow on you, which is indeed the mark of a good band.

I don't impress easily, but that's nice. Can't really compare RHCP to any band ever, they're that unique. Closest i can come is that they're a hybrid of Led Zep and U2, but even that doesn't do them justice. Nope, that's an entirely different animal.

I never hated 'em, but I wasn't originally much of a fan, either. They grew on me, too.

It's like a lot of bands; I didn't think much of them at the time, but now, years later, after we've been inundated with so much pure pop garbage, I begin to appreciate real bands using real instruments to play real songs with real melodic content.

Plus, no one can deny that the Chili Peppers were seriously funky. Flea is an underrated bassist and Frusciante, while absolutely horrible as a lead guitarist, is one helluva good rhythm guitarist and song writer.

:D

Nice!

Look, they're no Zeppelin or anything but they are, or were, a good funk based hybrid band with a good sense of melody, and they put on a good show.

To me, they're sort of a dumbed down and much more melodic Primus meets a Venice Beach hippy version of Prince. Maybe Faith No More, only with worse drug addictions, no classical pretensions and more funk.

Which would describe exactly what I thought of Jackson Browne circa 1978 and what I know now. I'm astounded by my own ignorance and will never under estimate my ability to be a clueless moron.

MGO -- They're the only band that was playing in the 80s that has actually got better with time, bookmark away...

Van -- are you a fan because Flea enrolled at USC last fall?

ucan't, no, but I did recently read that about Flea. For a psychotic lifer pothead the guy's a fairly interesting dude.

I'd agree that they are one of the few 80s era bands that got better over time.

I haven't been the least bit interested in U2 since, what, The Joshua Tree? Pretty much, ever since Bono donned those fucking glaucoma glasses and anointed himself the Dalai Lama I've had little use for them.

The RCHPs did actually get better, over time. They were better with Frusciante than with Hillel Slovak and they're better with Frusciante back in the lineup, compared to when Navarro was there.

Not too sure where WW came up with the Zep meets U2 comparison, though. They're the complete opposite of U2, in every way. They favor a stripped down approach to production, while U2 and The Edge in particular make Phil Spector seem like Robert Johnson. Unlike U2, they're also utterly without pomp or pretense. They're basically a party music jam band.

Zeppelin? Okay, the RCHP also has four members. Thus ends any similarities.

Seer, I don't know which apartment this is...

...but it's not the same one. That one is not across the street from Chatsworth High, right behind the left field fence, across the street. (Lemarsh St, I think. In fact, come to think of it, though the building fronts DeSoto and the address is a DeSoto address the place might actually be called Lemarsh Gardens.)

Whatever the Chili Peppers pass themselves off as nowadays is a pathetic shell of what they once were.

People say that about just every band to ever walk the earth.

Define "once were." Which version of RHCP?

Pick any version. I could never get much enjoyment out of the RHCP beyond "hey, that's kind of a catchy bass line" and then instantly moving on.

BSSM and earlier, Van. I was a big fan of One Hot Minute, too.

Mgo, you have to give a little props to Kiedis for being born and (somewhat) raised in Kentwood. That said, when I saw the Peppers in 00 in GR, it was extremely disappointing.

I'm confused. Does that make the music sound better?

Flea is an underrated bassist
There are many, many amazing bassists never got a sniff of what qualifies as underrating Flea. I think Flea has been overrated, if anything.
