There are dozens of games which you could say hinged on one or two 'key plays'. It says nothing about whether or not the game was close.

I would say they left about 14 pts on the field. The stupid pitch by Bush and the Int by Mike Grif are the big plays that basically took points away from USC.
Keep in mind I'm not saying Texas would have won against tOSU, No matter if Texas gets that TD or if they hit that fieldgoal, the fact is we couldn't stop tOSU from passing. So they probably would have passed more and kicked our ass more. What I'm saying is that a hand full of plays did make a huge difference and about 10 other plays made a strong difference.
And yes, I know you can say that about any and every game so this is no revelation, but in this particular game I would point to the box score as being closer to reality as to how close the game was then the final score.
I think most of the problems are easily correctible, while others are going to be a work in progress.
I think our passing game is going to be a work in progress while our pass defense with the return of a few players can be corrected enough to win out on our schedule.
