I don't know if I can speak for everybodys location, but aroud here I'm seeing all the area towns education depts. waste tens of millions of dollars on new school buildings.
In Portland, the "school repair levy bond thingy" was just soundly defeated -- thank goodness the transplants didn't screw that up with a lack of history. The school board wanted about $600,000,000 to do repairs andupgrades to the school buildings.
Yup -- $600 mil, in a city (proper) of about 600K pople, but it was goingto be collected in property tax... which worked out to several hundred dollars a year on the average house. Nevermind that this city of 600K has about the worst unemployment in the country.
But no, it gets even better -- those of us who ain't new remember that PPS (public school board) has played this game before...twice in the last 15 years. When they write the ballot measure, they include some really tricky fine print that says they can use the money for "emergencies," or some shit. And twice before, they took the extra money that was requested for building maintainance (which their maintainance budget is a line that reads '$0.00'), and decided they had an "emergency" need for across-the-board pay aises and boosts to the already enormous retirement package... not one dollar wentto building maintainance.
In return for this outstanding stewardship of public funds, they reward the taxpayers with a graduation rate of about 50% (Portland's per-student expenditure is right up there with any city in the country).
But damn, you should have seen how much $$$ the giant general contractors poured into campaigning for it.

But it's uite elling that you think the "American dream" involves having everyone else pay your bills for you.
Let's look at the other side -- how can you possibly define the "American dream" as being forced to pay for other people's progeny? We all make a choice whether to breed or not -- to bill those who choose not to for the expenses incurred by those who chose to is morally reprehensible... but Lenin thinks it's great.
Is it too much to ask people to keep their grubby mitts out of my pocket every time a whim strikes them?

You need to research the correlation of birth rate to education in modern society.
Ironically, educated people
don't procreate.
As much.
Of course, some good old fashioned, state-run family planning could make the necessary corrections...

You wouldn't recognise a Darwin thesis if it picked up a Galapagos Turtle and slapped you across the chops with it.
You could at least site Margaret Sanger if you're trying to make some point on intelligence/genetics.
Using Darwin as a foil just makes you look lazy...and ignorant of Darwin's work.

It's why public education should end at grade six. It should be limited to nothing more than basic literacy, arithmetic and home ec.
Any further education on the college track or trade track can be provided by the private sector.

America is practically down to a financialised economy. The "private sector" is now nothing more than investor/vultures who anticipate growth return that's measured in
months not
years.
The only thing that investment firms will be sinking money into is business junkets to China.

Tod and Dins are right on the mark with examples of political hacks thinking if we just build the taj mahal, the chillins somehow get smarter.
What bullshit.
Our K-12 edumacatin' system, run and funded on the local level was the envy of the world 60 years ago. Since then higher and higher levels of gubmint have taken over control and funding and the results are pathetic.
All those fancy new buildings help one group, the union contractor mafia.
I have very recent first hand experience with this. A buddy of mine has a bidness installing playground equipment. He is just finishing up a yob in springfield mass as one of them shiny new schools Todd is talking about. There are 3 playground sections, a baseball field, water sprinkler park, fancy landscaped area.
Every bit of it done by prevailing wage workers. This means every shovel holder on site is paid better than 30 bucks an hour.
This place is in the ghetto. How many of the workers there you think come from that neighborhood?
Not a fukking one.
So, in a horrible economy where good workers would be tripping over one another for a 15 dollar an hour yob, you have a number of worthless fukks mandated to make more than double that.
Worst part is, the fukking hood rats there will have this place torn to shit before the summer's over.
I could say fukk it, I got paid, which I did, working the weekends for Bill, but, it still bugs the shit out of me.
Contrast that to a supervision I helped him with yesterday.
A "supervision" is one of the gigs he has, out in the 'burbs where evil whitey lives. Evil whitey don't get a million bucks from uncle sambo, well, that's an exageration, the tab for the springfield job was only 990K. Whitey raises money through the PTO selling cookies, etc. Then they buy the equipment themselves and hire Bill to spend a day instructing THEM in putting up THEIR playground for THEIR kids.
And guess what, in 5 years, it'll prolly still be there.
Wanna know how many of these supervision jobs he's done in the ghetto over the last 15 years?

Should I not be pissed about overpaying union thugs to build fancy parks in the ghetto that will be trashed in 3 months?
Should I expect the parents in the hood to be encouraged to take part in doing something for their own kids?

I don't have an issue with public education nor my tax dollars being spent teaching children to read, write, and compute. I think the social engineering of youth seems to be where most of the money is going though.
I do take issue with the corruption of unions. Checks and balances. We all need them most of all a corruptible institution as government.
