Iowa vs OU in Alamo Bowl?

I was just thinking about Iowa's bowl chances and I figure that if we go 8-3, with some help we end up in the Outback Bowl, but most likely the Alamo Bowl. And I do think this team will win their last 3 games.

And it is very possible that Oklahoma would be the opponent. I still have hopes for a New Years Day Bowl, but if we end up in San Antonio, it would be nice to play Oklahoma. We haven't faced OU since 1979 and playing a traditional power in a bowl game is always nice. But the main storyline would be Bob Stoops/Chuck Long against Kirk Ferentz. I've always wanted to see this matchup. Obviously, both fan bases are disappointed with the season and the Alamo Bowl wasn't exactly where we all wanted to be back in September, but heck, it's not Boise! Besdies, everyone says that San Antonio is a great place to visit. And that is important when traveling to a bowl game.

Personally, I'd rather play OU in the national title game, but that ain't gonna happen this year.

So here is my fearless prediction....

Iowa vs OU in the Alamo Bowl on December 28.

OU vs. Big 10 opponent would be good.

I think OU goes to the Alamo Bowl, unless Texas somehow gets upset in the Big 12 championship game.

Texas -- Rose/Fiesta with win in Big 12 championship game, Orange or Sugar with loss.
Texas Tech -- Cotton
Colorado -- Fiesta with win over Texas in Big 12 championship game, otherwise Holiday.
Oklahoma -- Alamo if Texas wins Big 12 championship game, otherwise Holiday.

From the Big 10 standpoint, Iowa would need the Big 10 to get a BCS at-large bid for the Alamo Bowl. Here's how I see that shaping up:

Penn State: BCS, most likely Orange.
Ohio State: Capital One
Wisconsin: Outback
Michigan: Alamo

Iowa is looking at the Sun Bowl at best, quite possibly the Music City Bowl instead.

that's about how i see it.....provided OU finishes 7-4 and not 6-5. both the Cotton and Alamo reps would sell their mothers to Moroccan slave traders to get a South team (OU/Tech/ATM) instead of the non-travelling CU fan base. the students who DO travel will have already gone to the Big XII championship. but CU has a decent alum base in Cali....

all this predicated on CU being favored in all it's remaining games and not pulling the classic Barney "inexplicable loss".

If Iowa wins out, I guarantee they don't drop past Alamo. That would put us at 6-2 in Big-10 and 8-3 overall and we'd be ranked around #20. Penn State is going to beat Wisconsin and Ohio State is going to beat Michigan. That would mean we'd be in 3rd place all alone. And we travel as well as anyone. I can't see the Alamo Bowl, who is the Big-10's 4th pick, passing up on the #3 team when that team travels well. If it comes down to Iowa and Wisconsin, how can they take Wisconsin over Iowa if Iowa beats them, finishes higher in the conference, and has the same overall record?

I sure as hell am not going to El Paso. The last 2 times we went to the Sun Bowl, all I heard from Iowa fans was how there was nothing to do there and it was the worst town in the country.

No fucking shit, numbnuts. Iowa wasn't the topic, El Paso was. Just because Iowa is boring doesn't mean El Paso isn't. I'm not visiting a shithole city for vacation. Not sure exactly what the state of Iowa has to do with anything. But go back to paying off the refs and shut the hell up.

Wisconsin isn't any good. They're a lot like UCLA in that they really aren't any good but have a nice record. Michigan State gives Penn State fits a lot of times, but they still should win that.

Indy, do you guys need just one win or do you need two? Not sure if A&M has used that provision that allows a win over a 1AA team to be counted once every four years.

In any event, JON, easier said than done.

What you forgot to mention is that Iowa's remaining games are road games against Northwestern and Wisconsin, followed by a season-ending home game against Minnesota. It's entirely within the realm of possibilities that Iowa finishes 5-6 and out of bowl contention altogether, note that I'm not saying it will happen, but it definitely could. There's a logjam of 3-loss teams in the Big Ten, and the next few weeks will be crucial in sorting out where (or, for that matter, if) they go bowling.

I don't think aTm is going bowling this year. They only need one more win, but the remaining schedule is kinda brutal -- road games against Taco Tech and Oklahoma, plus a season-ending home game against Texas. And this was a team that barely escaped against Baylor. I see them going 0-3 to end the season and no bowl. Sorry, although I could be wrong.

Of course, win one and you're in somewhere, most likely the Houston Bowl, although the Alamo Bowl could be a possibility if the win comes against Oklahoma.

I get what you're saying Terry, but Iowa won't go 0-3. 2-1 at worst. We have more talent than any team left on the schedule. Minnesota never plays well at Kinnick. I guarantee you we beat Northwestern by at least 10-14 on Saturday. Wisconsin really isn't any good, but that is Barry Alvarez' last home game so that will be tough. But I think after the emotions of the game start to fade away, we'll end up winning with a superior football team.

I never said that. I said there were about 21 POTENTIAL draft picks. Doesn't mean they'll all get picked. Majority of them will. None of the teams left on the schedule match up well with us. They're not the type of teams that give us problems. Too one dimensional or not physical enough.

Say what you will about Wisconsin, JON, but they have only one loss all year. Meanwhile, you guys lost to Ohio State, and, more importantly, Iowa State (nice pickup on the edit, Terry :roll: ).

I'd say 2-1 is your best-case scenario the rest of the way.

Northwestern is a team that no one likes losing to - in fact, it burns pretty bad. Rack the hell out of them, though...they've been a scrappy team that always makes things pretty damn interesting in the Big 10.

Indeed, N'western is a tough little team, who plays the spoiler role real well...usually 1 or 2 times a year. Randy Walker has been great at recruiting kids that are pefect for his offensive spread system that the opposition rarely stops, but until they start to play any sort of defense, they'll always be relegated to a group of spoilers. I just wanted to further highlight the ineptness that is an Iowa team performing on the road.

Why would I be bitter? We lost, big deal. Losses don't bother me more than a couple hours after games. Nor should a loss to your favorite team bother anyone my age and over more than a few hours after a game. If it does, you need to get a life.

If we win out, and I still think we will. Strange as it may seem, I'm actually more confident now than I was before the Northwestern loss. I told you Wisconsin was a fraud. And we match up well with both Minnesota and Wisconsin. Either we'll get blown out by 30 in both of those games or we'll win. Just depends on if this team decides to take on the whole "Us against the world" mentality. If they're pissed off enough, they'll win these games.

If we do, we do still ahve a shot at the Alamo. But only if the Big-10 gets 2 BCS teams. If they do and we win out, we'll be in San Antonio. If we win out and the Big-10 doesn't get 2 teams in the BCS, it's off to El Paso. Win 1 game, and we go to Nashville regardless of whether or not the Big-10 gets 2 BCS teams.
