When does Brett step down or get benched?
When does Brett step down or get benched?
Not sure but this was a topic on local radio this morning and got heated. Packfan needs to understand that Rodgers is the future. What is more important at this point? Getting your FUTURE QB PT and reps or keeping alive a legacy and watching it suffer miserably through poor play.
I say go with the youngster.

When a season has gone so far down the crapper as this one has for a team, a decision one way or the other regarding the aging-legend/new kid is gonna get criticized.
You could LOGICALLY argue either way.
I think the thing to do is to let the legend play on this season.
Determine your approach for NEXT season at the conclusion of this one.
I'd keep Favre in the saddle if I was coach.

Favre has 15 TD, 14 Picks, 3 fumbles, and the 18th ranked passer rating through 8 games.
So, by HIMSELF, he is giving the ball up twice per game. You won't win many games like that regardless of who is playing next to him. In fact, you win ONE with stats like that.

You put Favre on the Arizona Cardinals roster and they would be a playoff team.

Favre is still their best chance to win. And he has earned the right. This isn't even debatable.

He's been in the decline for a while. At 36 his best years are behind him.
If Aaron Rogers isn't even as good as Alex Smith, what makes you think the Packers would be better off starting him?
Of course you don't really think the team would be better off. You're just a Packer Hater who would like to see the inexperienced Rogers take a shot at matching Davis Carrs Sack numbers for the 2nd half of the year.
Meanwhile your own team (TB) is teetering on the edge, ready to fall into the shitter. But you don’t have a take on that do you?
Butkus didn't wear an earring.
Debatable? That's what we are doing right now.
All I hear so far is that he's earned the right to go out and sling INTs. When you are that bad, does best chance outweigh the future. At least find out if Rodgers is goign to be your QB. You may have a chance at leinert.
You people think its so black and white. Screw his record starts. A change is needed. Since when was 17 turnovers in 8 games the "best chance" to win??????

I feel 100% of the time, rookie QBs should hold a clipboard the whole first year. When injury dictates, let the rookie have their chance and maybe you catch lightning in a bottle (see Big Ben and Tom Brady).
All that being said...
Now, I am not saying you throw the rookie QB in there. Keep him on the bench barring injury. I'm not saying you throw a different QB in there at all. Keep Favre in there. Green Bay isn't going anywhere this year anyway. Might as well get the last 2,000 miles on that jalopy.
What I am saying is that the above quote saying he goes out on his own terms is a bad move. Ask Joe Montana about that. San Fran had Steve Young waiting in the wings so what did they do? Trade the old guy. He had more skins on the wall than any other QB sans Terry Bradshaw, but Young was the future.
Rogers hasn't proven a thing yet. Keep Favre in. He still brings in $. However, as soon as Green Bay sees the slightest light through the QB tunnel in either Rogers or a FA, you dump Favre on his ass if he won't go out quietly on his own.
Troy Aikman was someone who "could have punched his own ticket" but he was forced to resign. Otherwise, he would have been dropped just like Favre should be if he makes any noise about retiring.
All that being said...
I totally disagree with this statement. Favre won you guys a Super Bowl, yes....9 years ago. What has he done for you lately?War Wagon wrote:Farve goes out on his own terms and when he says he's ready, period.

What makes you think that the Packers will be able to accurately evaluate Rogers with the team in such disarray?T REX wrote:Whoa....I never said the rookie was better. But why not give him a shot to see what he can do. You are 1-7. I don't think it can get any worse, do you?
Based on how long it took Brees to get up to speed under similar circumstances, I don't think it's possible this season. What I do believe is possible, is ruining the kid’s confidence.

He didn't want to quit though, and there was always talk in Dallas about him wanting to come back. JJ made it clear to him that he was moving on. Same shit happened with Emmit Smith. Troy sings a different story these days. He says he didn't want to come back because of how fucked the team was in the coaching department. Not sure if that's revisionist history or not.

VERY much revisionist history. I lived in Dallas at that time. ALl I listened to was Sports Radio 1310. They talked with Troy every week. They always asked him if he was interested in getting in there again. He always would say things like "I'm staying in shape. I feel I still have the arm strength. My back is feeling better than it ever has."Headhunter wrote:Troy sings a different story these days. Troy wanted to play. He could have made that team a lot better than it was, but JJ wanted the world to see his 2nd round pick of Q-Car was genius and that he was a great GM. JJ was wrong on both counts. He finally figured that out. That's why he brought in Parcells.

It's time for B. Favre to retire... If the Pack is going to suck for the next couple of years... what's the point of hanging around?
The Favre we all remember... left the party a couple of years ago. It's sad, but he will end up being the "Willie Mays" of Pro Football.
As far as Aaron Rodgers is concerned... he'll end up being one of the best qb's in the NFL.
The difference between AR and the rest of Tedford's qb's... AR has talent. Tedford's other qb's that went on to the NFL, were average football players at best. I wish the Niners would have taken AR as opposed to Alex Smith.

I don't think any "rookie" qb would do to well in a "West Coast" type offense. Walsh said it takes about 3 years to begin to master the offense, and that's why he didn't use it when he coached at Stanford. Montana didn't start till his 3rd NFL season.Joe in PB wrote:Aaron Rogers TC reviews were not good. The packers were surprised at how poorly he adapted to the pro game, & that he wasn't close to being a starter then.
If AR were to play now... he would get killed! Hell, I'm not sure he should even be given the chance to start next year if Favre is gone. Playing time this year??? Sure, but only in spot situations.

Frisco, I'm not a Packers fan per se, though I do have tremendous respect for that franchise. I'm a Chiefs fan first and foremost and any other team that stands in our way at any point can go get bent.
That said, I'm a football fan, and warriors like Farve only come around so often. He deserves the right to decide when to hang 'em up.
Sheesh, this losing has to be fucking killing him, and I know it's tough to go out there and play with no supporting cast. It would be real easy for him to throw in the towell at this point.
But just for that reason alone he won't quit. Guys with character, heart, and desire like he posseses won't simply lay down just because the going has gotten tough. On the contrary, he'll re-double his efforts trying to go out in style. He may fail miserably, but he'd rather die than give up.
Besides, he's my starting QB in JAFFL.
That trumps everything.
Favre is no different than any other superstar in the twilight of his career. He can still play but, at some point, the future will have to take priority over the here and now.
He can deserve the moon and the sea, but one fact remains. If he isn't honest with himself when that time arrives, the team will be.
Sure. They'll shower him with honors, throw ticker tape parades and name every street in Green Bay after him but, make no mistake ... when that time arrives, he'll be shown the door.
At this point, it doesn't seem like the Packers are convinced Rogers can be the future of the franchise, though.
Looks like Father Time will have to wait a bit longer before drafting The Gunslinger.

Let me make it quite clear in this thread, I am not being drafted by Green Bay.
Now, GreenBay is a dieing team at this point, they can ride the Favre show till its end. If the Packers had stacked the team with great players then it would be wise for him to consider other possibilities. If Favre wants to play one more year for his personal reasons then he should be cheered on by Packer fans to go find a team a "decent" quarterback away from a championship.
Fortunately, we just hit the Colt's era and Favre will not be super bowl bound. Packer fans, Indy fans went with this through the end of Reggie Miller end and even though we didn't win, it was great to celebrate and watch Reggie go. Now, the Pacers are competitive and Reggie is gone (though he is kicking himself, expecially if we make it), but it's over. Sad, but I was entertained the last 2 years.

If only the Packers had a QB who could give them a season of a 92.4, a completion percentage of 64.1%, 4088 yards and 30 TDs, that would be a great QB. Oh wait, those were Favre's numbers....JUST LAST YEAR.
I am just amazed that one bad season, with his main weapons out and a depleted O-line, that folks want to throw Favre under the truck.

I'm with you. It's not like he's completely inept. The guy can still throw the ball. It's strange seeing the Packers playing this poorly but it has a lot to do with the injuries and their young guys on the offensive line. If they can improve their secondary and their offensive line and stay healthy, they could be a playoff team again next year.
One bad year...unfortunately.....it is his worst ever.
Downturn of his career or an anomaly?
I am going with the odds.....his age is the x-factor and at 36-37 he's no spring chicken.
It is the end of an era and the beginning of a legend in GB.

I think Favre is still one of the better NFC QBs , even at his age . He still can light it up , given he has the weapons .
I would think a team who needs to win in the next year or so , who doesn't have a solid QB ( just think if he went to CHI next season ) would leap at the chance to sign Favre .
I heard a rumor that Rodgers was being considered for the NFL Europe this offseason .
Favre should leave GB , and go out they way he deserves to go out : a winner .

Favre will retire week 17 vs. the Seahawks when Holgren is in town. This was staged at the beginning of the season. It all just took you this long to figure it out.
