Michigan Wins...MSU wins...

Post by BlindRef »

Does State make a bowl game?

The Big Ten has 7 bowl eligible teams right now with 7 tie in's.

If Michigan and Michigan State win, that will make MSU bowl eligble, knock Ohio State out of the At-Large birth and there won't be a spot for the Sparties...wouldn't the bowls fall like this or am I missing something?

BCS: Michigan
Citrus: Penn State
Outback: OSU
Alamo: Whisky
Sun: Northwester
Music: Iowa
Motor City: Minnesota

Michigan State...no where.
Those who stay will be champions.

What if the opposite occurs? Would OSU be one of the 2 at large BCS teams?

I can't see them getting left out in the cold if they somehow manage to beat PSU. MSU would end-up in some lower-tier bowl. Maybe they could play Neb.

If State wins, they might keep John LLLLL around...that's all the reason to root for them. Conference title implications aside, few things bring me more join than watching MSU continue to flounder in mediocrity. Mr. Smith will keep that dream alive.

You Michigan guys sure talk a lot of junk for a program that has won only one title (and a split one, at that) over the last half century. MSU fan doesn't have much room to talk, that I know, but with Michigan fan's arrogance and expectations, you'd think these guys have won 10 or 15 titles within the last 50 years. Shoalzie, you have gone on record as saying, many times, that unless Michigan wins the NC, their season is a total failure. Well, since 1950 both MSU and UofM have one title to their credits. According to your logic of winning it all or failing completely, wouldn't that put these two programs on the same level, over the course of the last half century?

Good point. I keep forgetting that one of OSU's losses was OOC.

I was thinking the same thing...thought the Bucks had two conference losses like Michigan. If Michigan can pull it out on Saturday, I'll be glued to the PSU-MSU game...one of the rare times I don't want State to lose. We'd have a 3-way tie for the best record but Michigan would have the head-to-head wins against the Lions and the Bucks to give them the title. I don't care about the BCS or what bowl Michigan goes to...when the national title is out of the picture, I'll take the win over OSU and the Big Ten title and call it good until next fall.

I don't think the MSU-PSU game is gettin' enough play here. Babs, where the fuck are you? You, of all tards, should know the basic trend of your fucking squad after they've melted all mid-season.

Doesn't Sparty usually have some late season heroics? I expect so, especially after the Buckeyes whip scUM.

By no means do I feel good about this game. I believe in the heart of PSU this year. I believe that MSU has the talent to make this interesting. Recently, the home team rolls in this series.

I've been pulling up East Lansing in Google Earth, and showering my screen with insults, curses, and effluvium.

If MSU and tOSU win, there's a good chance that tOSU gets a BCS at-large bid. In that case, MSU would get one of the Big Ten's bowl tie-ins.

If MSU beats PSU and UM beats tOSU, I suspect MSU goes bowling somewhere, if not in one of the bowls with a Big Ten tie-in. The SEC already is guaranteed not to fill at least one of their bowl allotments, and there's a good chance that the same will happen with the Big 12 and Pac-10. And MSU would have two wins over Top 10 teams (ND and PSU).

On a national level, biggest beneficiary of a UM win over tOSU has to be ND. Not only is one of their major competitors for a BCS at-large bid eliminated, but that win would have to help ND with the computers, which is where their BCS ranking currently is being hurt most.

Oops, my bad. If MSU and tOSU both win, tOSU wins the Big Ten and gets the automatic bid. Penn State, with a late-season loss, probably wouldn't get an at-large bid, and they're the only other Big Ten team that would conceivably be eligible for one.

But I still stand on my statement that MSU, if they win, will go bowling somewhere.

There's not a good chance it would happen. It would happen. People are forgetting that OSU only has 1 loss in conference. They win, they are at worst Big Ten (Co-) Champions. If they win and PSU loses, they win the conference outright and are a lock for a BCS game.

You beat me to it.

But you're right, if both OSU & PSU win tomorrow, the Buckeyes are a legitimate contender for one of the two at-large BCS spots. Notre Dame pretty much has the other one wrapped and bowed.

You're right about that last part. If PSU and tOSU both win, however, I don't think tOSU is necessarily a lock for the BCS. tOSU would need to finish in the Top 4 to be guaranteed an at-large bid, and I don't see that happening (although it possibly could). Meanwhile, you've got competition from ND (two losses by a combined total of 6 points, one against the #1 team in the country), Va Tech (could finish 10-1) and Oregon (could finish 10-1, would have a pretty strong geographic advantage for the BCS if the Fiesta Bowl has two open slots, which will happen if USC and Texas play in the Rose Bowl). Not to mention that ND is at #9 and needs only to move up three slots for a guaranteed at-large bid; that could happen if they get the right help down the stretch.

Assuming tOSU, ND, Va Tech, Miami and Oregon all win out, it's anyone's guess who'll get the two at-large bids.

If Miami wins-out it is ACC-champ and goes automatically.

Don't forget about Bama, they still have only one loss.

Because ND is ND they'll likely get one spot, the other is hard to say.

True. But Va Tech needs Miami to win out in order to get consideration for an at-large bid. A Miami loss would put Va Tech into the ACC championship game (assuming Va Tech wins out), in which case they'll either go as ACC champs or get shut out of the BCS.

Until today, that was a good call.

I'm not so sure about that. ND was eligible for the BCS in '98 and '02, and got passed over both years.

With Miami's loss, it had to help the Buckeyes' chances for an at-large bid.
