The article seems to say that A&M isn't going after this just because of the Super Bowl, yet the info presented paints a different picture as Frozen pointed out. Seattle has been using said trademark since at least 1984. Why wait until now to get upset about it.

I honestly never heard the Seattle Fan Base being referred to as the 12th Man until the playoffs this year. Personally, I could care less. However, the law is the law. If A&M pursues litigation, they will win.

Expect to see Seattle Fan Base referred to as the 12th Fan in the future while all the people in the stands have 12th Man signs. Once Seattle sucks again, this will be an afterthought.

No shit. They could honor their "greats" on the rim of the urinals.

Which reminds me of the ol' Kingdome, the worst abomination of an arena in human history. Anyone ever catch a game or any other event there? When you went into the men's room, they didn't have urinals -- they just had this big stainless steel trough that went from one wall to the other, with a few drops of water running through it. Fucking disgusting, and their restrooms usually had an odor that was unique in the world of restroom odors. But at least it didn't kill people, like the roof did.

Don't be hatin on my Seahawks. I still miss the Kingdome. Man, that place was loud, much louder than Qwest Field and Qwest rocks.

A&M comes off looking really childish on this. I would think they would have more important things to worry about.

OK, you had me sold at first, but my troll detector just pegged out.

When I went to the Chickens/Colts game, I was talking to some guys in line ahead of me, and it appeared that one of the guys in the group was visiting from out-of-town. Dude used the name Qwest Field, and the entire group he was with all chimed in with "WHERE?" "HUH?" "What is this Qwest Field you speak of? We've never heard of it." Every other Hawks fan I know says the same thing...it's Seahawk Stadium.

So there you have it, CFB posters --it IS a troll, and doesn't live in the Seattle area.

It may seem childish, but if you do not protect your trademarks, it becomes public domain as Frozen said. Yes, they've used it apparently for 22 years. And like I said, this is the first I've heard of it.

Simply put, if I were to make my own BBQ sauce (which I am working on) and put on the label "Finger lickin' good" and sold it locally for 22 years, I'd probably not even get noticed, much less get busted on it. Of course, as soon as I start to make a name for myself and get noticed, KFC would be knockin' on my door with lawyers.

Now, Seattle Seahawks have apparently been doing this for 22 years. Now that they may start cashing in on it via merchandising, A&M is trying to put a stop to it. I don't see how anyone could blame them. Of course, if the brass at A&M knew Seattle was doing this all along (and they very well might have known), then it becomes a much tougher case for A&M.

Sorry Dinsdale, wrong again. I'm talking to an audience of people on this board who hear on TV of Qwest Field, not Seahawk Stadium. Most people in the area simply call it Qwest, lots of people call it Seahawk Stadium, and some call it Qwest Field. Most people who refuse to call it Qwest are those who are vehemently opposed to corporate intrusion in sports and stadium naming. Keep on trying though.

Again, give me ONE good reason anyone would troll as a Husky fan. An SC or Texas troll maybe but you'll never find a Husky troll until they start winning 9 or 10 games a year again.

i don't think it's NEARLY as bad as IU straight stealing Oklahoma's football uniforms (until, arguably, this year when they switched from the white facemask to the crimson one). or Alabama creating a Yell "Squad" or "Crew" like the Ags.

i'm sure Nike is involved in the OU/IU deal so as far as copyright stuff it's prolly moot--if even applicable since the so-called OU interlocking block logo is probably all that is copyrighted by the University.

but, i don't disagree with ATM protecting their copyright and marketing license.....though the timing of it seems a little hoky and righteous indignation/ chest thumping all a little too ATM-ish, on the cliche side. i've got a good friend from college who transferred to ATM.....and i know some of his buddies and they are all cool guys (and only a little bit brainwashed). ;).

no offense to Indy. JMO.

That ain't no lie, it is like they put something in the water down there. Few fans are annoying as Aggie fans (minus Indy).

But back on topic, I hope you run Seattle into the ground. I think it is absurd you haven't done it before now.

This is fucking lame. It's like when Pat Reilly trying to trademark "threepeat". Gimme a fucking break. The term has been used, as well a sixth man in hoops, forever. Who cares?

What if UM started whining about all of the college and HS teams that are using the winged helmets?

You mean like the ones you copied from Princeton or bought from Spalding?

Every school has their fair share of annoying fans. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that, at A&M, we don’t try to “brainwash” our student body. Hell, I’m surprised that Aggie Tradition isn’t a required class for all incoming freshman (It’s optional. We call it fish camp).

Saying it’s “been around forever” is one thing. According to Texas A&M, they created it in 1922. I’m neither old enough to refute that nor am I going to spend any time researching for articles referring to the “12th Man” prior to 1922.

And it is one thing to say “we did it first. it’s ours.” It’s another thing to actually have a trademark protecting it. Either way, I’m not losing any sleep over how it turns out. I would like it to remain a Texas A&M thing only just because it is something special and unique about our University, but if it doesn’t, so be it.

I’m a little more concerned about the shitty product we’ve put on the field the last few years..

Sky,
I meant the ones created by Fritz Crisler, for UM in 1938.

Yeah, Coach Herbert O. "Fritz" Crisler used the same ones the year before at Princeton.

Anyway, just poking fun at ya. Your helmet is one of the best ones out there.

Fatuous takes get slapped with the Fanhome logo...because we all moved to fanhome for a week or so when Hostboard took a crap. I think Waz stayed there, but I digress...all that were to be had there were fatuous takes.

Typical topic list at fanhome:

- Which team has the best uniforms?

- Which team has the best stadium?

- Which team has the best band uniforms?

- Which team has the best campus?

- Which team has the best tailgaiting?

- Which team has the best helmets?

- Which team has the best fans?

- Which team has the best mascot?

- Which team has the best overall program?

All of these topics would have the exact same first post:

"Mine. Your thoughts?"

This post followed by a lot of "No mine is, poopy pants!"

looking like this is going to be a PR nightmare for the Ags this week....as the pro-sports "first" media have found a punching bag.

A&M has twice registered trademarks for "The 12th Man" label -- in 1990 and 1996 -- that include entertainment services, "namely organizing and conducting intercollegiate sporting events," and products, such as caps, T-shirts, novelty buttons and jewelry.

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/11075105/
I'm pretty sure that the term 12th man was in common usage before 1990. In fact, the Buffalo Bills also called their fans "the 12th man" and also put them on their "Ring of Honor" right next to Orenthal in 1992. The Aggie AD is high if he thinks Buffalo complied with the cease and desist request they allegedly sent to Buffalo.

http://www.buffalobills.com/history/Wal ... 2thMan.jsp

Of course the Pittsburgh Steelers have no need for any 12th man bullshit. They just sell out all their games and travel better than any team in the NFL save maybe Green Bay.

Hey, if A&M wants to run around and pretend like football traditions are their own personal property, go right ahead. But I hope they don't expect the real world to go along with the A&M version of fantasyland. That shit will fuck up your Ghusl and make you have to do wodu all over again.
