Of course we will pass on Adrian Peterson. Who needs a stud running back, right?

Actually, Brady Quinn ought to be the odds-on pick for the #1 pick in the '07 draft, at least at this point. Just sayin'.

Brady Quinn could go completely undrafted if he fucks a few 14 year olds.

Guilty as charged, but that doesn't discredit my point.

Quinn is likely to leave ND as the school's all-time passing leader. ND is guaranteed to be a preseason Top 5 team (Oklahoma would be on the bubble in that regard) and Quinn has to be the preseason Heisman favorite. If both Quinn and ND live up to the hype next season, that puts Quinn in a very good position viz. the draft. Nothing against Peterson, he's a great player (assuming he's recovered from the injuries), but if ND wins the national championship and Quinn's an All-American, Peterson would probably have to win the Heisman to have any chance of leap-frogging Quinn.

There's also the QB vs. RB dichotomy at play here as well. Generally, RB's have a more immediate impact in the NFL than do QB's, but their careers don't last as long, and QB's generally have the greater long-term impact. If you have the #1 pick and a choice between a QB and a RB, both are rated roughly equally and you have a need at both, you pick the QB if you're aiming for long-term success, generally speaking, anyway.

Or holds up a few liquor stores, or assassinates the President, or . . .

Seriously, what was your point with that post?

Huh? It's not quite that simple...it all depends on what the team's first priority is. You should've phrased that to say, "he'll be the first QB selected".

It all depends, I suppose. There's a school of thought that says you pick the best athlete available. In any event, barring a trade of the #1 pick, the team with that pick, at least arguably, needs to get better at every position.

As applied to the Texans, which was what rozy did, there isn't a glaring difference between their need at RB and their need at QB.

The Hypeman errrrr Heisman is absolutely irrelevant when it comes to where these guys will be slotted. Period.

Quinn may be the best QB available, but he won't be the best all around athlete out of the draft. Not even close.

I think "athlete", as used in the phrase, "best athlete available", has a different meaning than what you are giving it here. I think that "best athlete available", as the draftniks use it, means the best player at his particular position, regardless of position actually played.

Most QB's aren't the best overall athletes on their team, far from it. By your logic, very few teams applying the "best athlete available" school of thought would ever pick a QB.

If Quinn has another year like he did last year and leads Notre Dame back to the BCS, he will be the #1 pick. AD will likely go #2. I think his past problems w/ injuries will hurt him just a bit. Not much though.

You should've been a little clearer with your point. You used the phrase "best athlete available", as if he's being compared to other position players in the draft, as opposed to being compared to JUST quarterbacks (which is what your point was, or so how it reads now).

True. But in order for Peterson to put together the type of year he'd need to move ahead of Quinn under those circumstances, it'd be virtually impossible for him not to win the Heisman.

Lets say that Peterson rushes for 1700 yards and Quinn leads the Irish to an undefeated season. Who's getting the Heisman?

I think we all know that Heisman would be going to South Bend. But with a season like I just mentioned, Peterson would be at, or near the top of the board for any team with a need at running back.
