DaVinci Code flick

Post by Mike the Lab Rat »

Some of the folks in the rural backwoods area outside my little college town are getting their panties in a knot over the DaVinci Code movie...letters to the local paper about how it's an affront to true Christians, discussions on picketing cinemas that show it, etc.

Having read the book (and its historically fast-and-loose "nonfiction" predecessors Holy Blood, Holy Grail and The Messianic Legacy) and being a churchgoing Christian, it is my opinion that if you get all hot-and-bothered and deeply offended regarding Brown's book or the movie...

...you're a frigging moron.

But, at least we're unlikely to see mass rioting and destruction as per the Muslim "Mohammed cartoon" idiocy.

I plan on seeing it when it shows up here. Since I have hardly any religious knowledge, I just go with the flow. Remember the movie, The Exorcist? That movie basically scared the shit out of me. All I know is that if you believe in God then you'd probably have to deal with evil, which is the devil. You don't fuck with the devil.

I don't really want to read the book. Too bad the Lab Rat lives across the nation from me. I'd rather just have him sit me down in some pub and have him tell me the story about the book. I'd buy the beers.

When I was a kid, my folks went out one night when I was about 13. No babysitter. I made a point of reading Blatty's "The Exorcist" while they were gone (I read voraciously as a kid). That book was verboten for us Catholic kids, but my dad snagged a copy from a coworker and left it in his room.

Folks came back home about 2 or 3 am (hey, it was the 1970's....) and found me asleep on the couch with the book on my chest, with every light in the frigging house, attic to basement, ON.

They laughed their asses off and then my dad said, "Kid, how the hell is leaving lights on going to save you from the devil?"

Yeah, that helped. I was freaked out for weeks.

Actually, it's not that bad as a book, if you're willing to completely get past the historical inaccuracies Brown tosses in. Reads really fast.

I liked Angels and Demons better, but that may have been partly due to my fondness for the Bavarian Illuminati.

I'll definitely see it, though I liked Angels And Demons more...

Once The Da Vinci Code became such a national craze I remember talking to my wife about the possibility of ever making a movie out of it. We both agreed that yep, dammit, Tom fucking Hanks would be a good choice for the lead role.

See, normally we get stupid shit like Ben Affleck playing Jack Ryan in Sum Of All Fears or Live Tyler playing Arwen in The Lord Of The Rings; ie, horribly inappropriate casting decisions where even the age of the person is all wrong.

I don't normally like Tom Hanks very much. He was great in Forrest Gump and I suppose he was okay in the Meg Ryan chick flix but in general....nah.

He's perfect though as the lead in this one. Kind of a frumpy middle aged Everyman Academic. He's not particularly overbearingly heroic, which is the kind of guy I feared they'd choose for this one.

I was fairly well certain they'd try to get Harrison Ford for this one, since he pretty much has the Older Guy Action Hero thing locked down tight and I was pretty sure they'd try to turn the lead role here into yet another inapporopriately heroic guy.

Not bad, not bad at all, this time. The movie may still suck but at least with the Hanks casting it looks like they may be trying to stick to the original feel of the book.

As for the religious wackos, fuck, where they're concerned I wish the book and this movie were far more controversial. Boycott all you want, Stupid Lemmings. Just make sure to do us proud and don't go Radical Muslim over this shit...

And hey, why not? Instead of some golden wine goblet or a magical treasure chest that's sitting around doing nobody any good whatsoever why couldn't the Holy Grail simply be the knowledge that Christ The Man got busy and had an heir with a known hottie slut? Is not "God bless the sluts!" our universally shared mantra here??

Personally, I'd like it if we someday found out that Moorese was in fact a descendent of that fortuitously fucked up coupling. Actually, it'd make complete sense. Dude's gotta be the the scion of something depraved, right??

A Catholic response...

Yeah, I'm thinking the RCC (Roman Catholic Church) is mad happy about this controversy. It gets to rally the faithful to its defense versus a book/film. Dan Brown gets continued publicity from the fracas. Dan Brown and the RCC are completely best buds right about now. A conspiracy theory?

No, it's probably serendipitous, but what's transpired yielded an alliance nonetheless. Books and theatre tickets sold for Brown and Co.; the RCC gets victim status and the chance to move public focus away from the molestation problem.

Damn reasonable response from that Opus Dei representative, velo. Would that the Radical Islamics took a similarly reasonable approach in their rebuttals to perceived slights against their religion...

Christianity has been around for over 2000

In reality I enjoy Brown's books more for their travel log qualities than for their religious/historical implications/plots...

Seriously. If you can read Angels & Demons and still not want to see Rome (assuming you haven't already) then you're just a cultural dullard and you're probably fully satisfied watching network tv.

The DaVinci Code does much the same thing for Paris and even London but man does A&D work for Rome...

RACK

Angels & Demons is by far my favorite non-Grisham novel. TDC was like watching the first 2 hours of Roller Ball by comparison. Excruciating.......by comparison. (ok, so a little hyperbolic)

As to MtLR's original post. Concur. There were many parts of the book I didn't like but not enough to get riled up and bothered about. I see it for what it is. A fictional novel. And can enjoy it as such, as I likely will the movie.

Personally, I have ZERO problem with the sacred feminine...which reminds me, BEDTIME!

Lemme guess, .....
The Christ is grossly diminished, twisted, and blasphemed in this film .... ?

Ho-hum.

A Christian picketing a movie theatre over ANY movie is the height of absurdity.
It's a friggin' movie.
Don't like it, don't see it.
Game over.

If you're a Christian, PRAY.
God is with you, no ... ?
You don't recognize that... ?
Is this film gonna get over on you ...?
Is the film gonna get over God's people ... ?

Wake UP and act like who you are.

I don't care to see the film.

I think its going to be a very good movie. Wont be as good as the book, but when is that ever true? I think they did a wonderful job of casting. The only role I was actually not sold on was Hanks. He is a great actor, no doubt, but I was picturing someone more of a ladies man and I dont think he fits the bill. I thought about it for a while, yet I couldnt think of another actor who could do a better job b/c I wasnt sold on any of them pulling off being a Harvard professor.

Wasn't a big fan of the book, but I'm sure the movie will make eleventy billion dollars because of the hype and because Ron Howard puts out good movies. Had I not read the book, I'd be interested in the movie. Now, not so much.

Read The code when it first came out a couple years ago. As I remember I posted a thread about it being an exciting read. Having read the book I probably won't waste the $8 zops on the movie because the book, although a good read was FOS.

Dr. James Kennedy is airing a film documentary "The Di Vinci Delusion" May 13th. and 14th. A fact check of the Code, and probably a good counter to Browns BS.

Had that book not taken a shot at the Catholic church and the main tennant that they hold so dear, this book wouldn't have sold dick. I don't think Brown is even an average writer, but he's smart enough to find something that will strike a nerve with a huge popluation of people in this country. And because most peoples attention span is that of a knat, he stuck with the formulaic 3-5 page chapter so everyone who picks it up will finish it.

Fiction: An imaginative creation or a pretense that does not represent actuality but has been invented.

People need to get over it.. this is FICTION. The religous right really has nothing better to do, do they?

And the people who are running saying this is how it is need to get over it as well... I guess they'll read Dracula and belive Stoker had the inside veiw on the real Vlad? People need to get a fuckin' life.

It is an entertaining story- but that's where it stops.

For those of you out there with a sense of humor about the whole thing, Christopher Moore wrote the definitive (tongue very much in cheek) story of the missing years in the life of an adolescent Christ.

Chris Moore is one of the funniest and freshest talents writing today.

Check this out, it's worth it.

how ironic that Salman Rushdie gets death threats from a book critical of Islam, and Dan Brown gets a movie starring Tom Hanks from book critical of Christianity.
