Can you recommend anything from your state?
Not having to work anymore is really da bomb. Since I hung up the holster I've been able to travel to China, which I would give an "A". Then recently I just returned from Jordan and Israel, which I would give a "C".
I'm looking to just stay in the United States this next time. So what does your state have to offer, or where have you gone that you would recommend?
I've got a metal knee so I don't want any referrals to water skiing places, or great sky diving schools. I prefer peace and tranquility over the screams of little rug rats from Disneyland. I prefer outdoor visuals over some bullshit disco night life scenes. I'd take a quiet night in some backwoods camp ground, with my campfire, my whiskey, and even sleeping out of the Ford Expedition, rather than standing in line to see some huge hole in the ground.
Last year I spent a few days over in Eastern Oregon...Hells Canyon, Baker City, rode on an old railroad, and camped out once. Nothing big, but it was relaxing.
I'm not much of a fisherman but some of those adventures with a group/guide deal look interesting. My buddy did the Alaskan one...where you fly up, get tucked into some lodge, and then head out to fish for halibut and salmon. Beautiful views, fresh air, hungry fish, big old home cooked style meals back at the lodge, having a cigar and maybe some beers by the fire.
Hell, I could ride on the back of Sudden Sam's motorcycle and we could tool all around Tenn., while trying to dodge all those people who could qualify for the movie, Deliverance II. Maybe even go to upstate NY and meet up with Bsmack and the Lab Rat. Even if we couldn't find anything to do we could drink mass quantities of beer at some local pub, and then take a cab back to Bri's where we'd smoke about a half a pound of chronic.
Or, I could just have Dins tell me what I'm missing here in Oregon. I really have been deficient in visiting parts of my own state. I'll have to admit that I've been kind of bullshitting you. Would I really want to meet peeps from here face to face? Prolly not. It just seems kind of gay, if you know what I mean? You ever go and meet someone from the board and then try to explain it to your wife, girlfriend, or a buddy? They kind of look at you like, "You're meeting some perv from the internet? Gawd dang, Luth, I thought you were more squared around than that."
If you've got a link or pictures for your recommendation, then I'd appreciate it.

If you want to get away from lame tourist dives, I'd recommend going to Seaside. Anywhere you go away from there is a good start at avoiding lame tourist dives. Or so I'll assume....haven't been in many years...something about an arrest warrant, or something.
If you haven't been to Newberry Crater, you ain't seen shit (sup Timmay). Spectacular. Hope you like 100 degrees, 50MPH winds, bears, and severe thunderstorms...but dang...cool spot. Just SE of Bend, more or less.
Or, you could just go up to Timberline/Government Camp, and see if there's any snowboarder skanks that have a thing for gimpy old fucks with bad knees.
I got 99 problems but the 'vid ain't one

I don't see any snow in those pictures... I guess they were taken on that day where it didn't snow.

WMN, yeah, that looks nice. I was born in Colorado too.
Jay...bwhahahahahaha. Yeah, but I think we were lucky. Most of the people listed were great. PP was just as I would have imagined (I had seen the old Elba pictures). Mcatboy was way too generous, Toos was quieter than I expected, Paintboy was way too loud, Cmike was laid back and enjoyed pre-chewed food, and you needed a haircut. I know you said you left a day earlier than the rest of us because your girlfriend at the time had thrown out her back. But what I think happened was something dark, and ominous, that occurred in that hotel room that you and Toos shared.
Winnie mucka is out. There will be no Reno, no Vegas for old Luth. Maybe North Lake Tahoe, but that would be pushing it.

The area where I live (same general area as Luth) is mainly populated by transplants. An overwhelming number of transplants. And being the socialite I am, I meet them by the buhzillions. I think he summed it up pretty well. Although this is looking like a good week to miss around here.

Dins is right Luth. ALL of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument "attractions" are pretty cool . the crater being the most awesomer.
A REALLY relaxing trip would be to get a campsite at one of the high cascade lakes. The 2nd campground at Elk lake looks right at the back of Mt. Bachelor and Broken Top. one of the most amazing views in the state in the summertime.
You could base there and hit all the cool volcanic stuff and explore the cascade lakes.
worth the dust and blaring high altitude sun.
I laffed the other day thinking of old dins when one of my realtor clients told me she could list my house at $120k more than I bought it for last july
and I only paid $220k
guess I aint the only one who likes it out here at the ponderosa....

Luth,
Take a week or more and head down here.
2 days in Yosemite
Enter the park from the East side by Mono Lake, drive over Tioga Pass and down to the Valley. Start early as there's a lot to see, I suggest starting from Topaz Lake at the CA/NV border on Hwy 395 (80 miles south of Reno). The Best Western Resort is outstanding and inexpensive (nice casino and food BTW) You can stay in Yosemite (expensive) at the 41 gate (moderate) or in Oakhurst (preferable) after a long days drive and go back to spend a full day or more exploreing the Valley floor. Drive down to Fresno and book a nice room anywhere on the north side right on Hwy 41 as you enter the city. (Beers and grub at Y's place are a couple minutes away if you so desire) :D
Next Day:
Right up the 180 into Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park (about an hour and 30 minute drive) The Giant Trees are awesome as well as driving down into the canyon ect. Again this is another long day or more.
At this point you can come back down into the valley and cross over to the Monterey Peninsula which is 2 hours from Fresno. 17 mile drive, carmel, The Aquarium. ect. ect. (outstanding)
After that Head North towards Home base. There's to much to even mention from the Central Coast to Portland if you so desire to keep traveling.
Hope that helps.

So, what you're saying, is that there's no shortage of retarded fucking californians?
You're quite the wise man, Timbo.
And I'm guessing that when Forbes(or Money, or one of those rags) tossed Bend under the bus as "the coolest place in the country for a telecommuter to live," or whatever the heck they called it, it didn't hurt the property values any.
I got 99 problems but the 'vid ain't one

fornicalians? we all came in the 70's and 80's. the ones who can't handle winters end up in your lap anyway . enjoy that.
Bend may be VERY californianized, but these tards are coming from all over the world, not just from the neigh neigh to the south.

You could pretty much say the same thing about the U&R. Although, given that TWIS has made a pretty strong case for the Finger Lakes Region, I'd throw the early portion of autumn in there as well. Winter in these parts is pretty much like Siberia minus the political oppression.Dinsdale wrote:As a guy I used to work with once(originally from KC, KS) said: "You know, as a transplant, and knowing many transplants who feel the same, no matter how long I live here, I will NEVER understand anyone leaving here in summer to take a vacation. Anything in Cal. is nice on the eyes. Arguably the prettiest state, even though it is so overpopulated in some areas. I drove once from Astoria, Oregon and south on HWY 101 (Playing Jackson Browne) all the way to S.F. Great beauty between our two states, fo sure.
I stayed in Carmel for a few days when I attended the last two rounds of the '72 U.S. Open when Nicklaus won it. I could sell my 3200 sq. foot house on 9/10ths of an acre up here and maybe buy a one car garage (house would be extra) in Carmel.
Wolfie, ah, I'm not sure about the Florida trek. Maybe in the winter I should try it. But late summer???? I really don't want to see Joe Bastardi on my motel TV talking about "A perfect storm, 15 minutes from BigO's back yard."
I have a soft part in my heart for upstate NY, even though I've never been there (Was in NYC for a week though, but that doesn't count). One of my travel buddies sent me four Cuban cigars, probably garnered when he crossed the border from his town in Massena, NY into Canada. I saw some of his pictures from around where he lives and it appeared to be about as green as Oregon.
I might just take up Dins/Timmay's idea about the Newberry crater which is about 40 miles from Bend, Or. Anything that compares to Crater Lake has to be great. I mean, looking down on Crater Lake on a clear blue warm day has to be one of the better Kodak moments a person could experience.
Do we have any posters who've spent time in Montana, North Dakota, or Idaho? I've spent numerous summers growing up in Nebraska, so I got to do the camping gig in South Dakota in the Black Hills. Anybody got any connections to a cabin, on a lake, in some remote and beautiful areas? One of those places where you don't hear the freeway sounds? A small fire in your cabin's fireplace, the sounds of bull fucking frogs at night, the sun dropping behind the mountains...yeah. No TV, no phone...just a nice fire in a small cabin, with a plentiful supply of steak, chicken, whiskey and books. All I need is 3 days...maybe a small Alumacraft boat with a trolling motor, tied up at my own little dock.
Just sitting around in my skivvies, my balls slapping themselves silly like some large flesh wind chimes, several days growth of beard, eating breakfast that consists of peanuts in the shell, Budweiser and some Skittles.
Something like dat.

My better-travelled friends, a couple of which have lived in Upper NY and surrounds, all tell me I'm not missing much.
That's the problem for me -- growing up where I did, it's awfully hard to be very impressed by the scenery elsewhere. But, it's out there...just harder to find than at Home.
I always enjoy the Castle Crags when I drive through the Siskyous/Klamath Mtns/Cascades...or whatever you call that spot where all of the mountain ranges come together.
SF Bay is pretty sweet, if you can handle all of the people and industry.
A drive up through Napa Valley is cool as poo. Napa to Calistoga...spectacular. Hopefully, one can avoid Vallejo while getting there.
The North Cascades in NW Washington are fucking SICK. Steepest mountains in the country-btw. Speaking of NW Washington, the Olympic Peninsula is awesome. The west side of it features the most dense terrestrial biomass on Planet Earth(that means more shit grows there than anywhere else on earth, for the retarded folks). Gotta do that one in summer, though.....
Which makes me ponder, and look forward to the day I take a serious raodie...one of these days, I'm going to start at the end of US101(Pacific Coast Highway) in Olympia, and drive all the way to the southern end (which correct me if I'm wrong, is somewhere in the Greater San Diego area?), with absolutely no schedule, itinerary, or plan...just fishing poles, golf clubs, and a fat wad of cash. Sounds like the perfect vacation to me, except the part where I'd be surrounded by californians.

Actually, one of my long-standing goals has been to set foot in all 50 states. I've made it to 34, but that pace has been slowed considerably since I got married and started cranking out puppies.

Spent two summers working in Gardiner, MT which is the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park. What a freaking beautiful place! I would totally recommend a trip to that area. If you really want to go somewhere nice in the summertime, hit Jackson, WY and the Grand Tetons N.P. Talk about beautiful...Luther wrote:Do we have any posters who've spent time in Montana?

I've met a few posters in my day. Some good, some not exactly what I expected. If you're in DC and you don't hook up with Tom, you made a mistake. Nostra, contrary to his online rep with some, was solid as well. I wonder what ever happened to that dude?Luther wrote:Maybe even go to upstate NY and meet up with Bsmack and the Lab Rat. Anyway, I'm digressing...
Entertainment options abound in Western NY. Of course a lot depends on exactly when you came down. For example, if you were here the weekend of Harbor Fest in Oswego, I would strongly recomend that. If it was the weekend of Canal Days in Fairport, I'd give that a spin. And of course, if it was the weekend of GNIFDTAS, Lab Rat and myself would initiate you into the mysteries of the Neolithic Brewerton disc throwers and we would drink heavily at the Idle Hour and burn a few Journey CDs in your honor.
Of course there's camping galore here in WNY. Places like Letchworth, Allegheny, Watkins Glenn and Stoney Brook to name a few. This handly little site lets you search for parks by your preference.
http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/
Also, if you like bass fishing, the 1000 Islands should be on your itinerary. You can do the Islands in many different ways from tent camping to 4 star resort hotels. Probably the nicest way IMO is to rent a cabin or trailer on or near the river. There's way to many places to list so just do a web search for 1000 Islands. Ground zero is Alexandria Bay, but Clayton is nice too.

Either way, they're either blind and stupid or drunk and stupid, most likely all the above and high to boot no doubt (not that there's anything wrong with that).Dinsdale wrote:My better-travelled friends, a couple of which have lived in Upper NY and surrounds, all tell me I'm not missing much.
See Dins, I've had the pleasure of traveling much of these United States and a few choice spots around the globe and I can say without any homerism, that NY State offers some of the most beautiful sites anywhere. That's a straight up, no bullshit fact according to me IMO btw.
Having an open mind is a good place to start. Don't compare everything to "home" is the next thing you should try. If all else fails, drugs are your friend, but you knew that one.Dinsdale wrote:That's the problem for me -- growing up where I did, it's awfully hard to be very impressed by the scenery elsewhere. But, it's out there...just harder to find than at Home.

Shit...you never told me you were wealthy, Luth. Sounds like a freaking gold mine round these parts.Luther wrote:my 3200 sq. foot house on 9/10ths of an acre up here
and maybe buy a one car garage (house would be extra) in Carmel.
That sounds really cool....wait...I had an all-expense-paid trip to Florida this last winter, and I got sick and missed it. Wasn't too happy about it. I don't think the guy who had already paid for my ticket was too happy either, but he knew what was up, and that I was too busy dying to make it.I'm not sure about the Florida trek. Maybe in the winter I should try it.
Crater Lake is ungodly crazy beautiful(deepest lake in North America-btw). Catch is, you drive like 800 hours through the mountains, snap your pics, and leave. A lot more going on at Newberry-imo. The obsidian flows are pretty sick. I can't emphasise enough the importance of bringing the right clothing and gear and whatnot. Years ago, I went there in mid-July. Mid-afternoon, we were on a boat fishing, and the temps were close to 100. Late afternoon, we were on the opposite side of East Lake from the lodge where we had rented the boat, and the sky turned black, and the legendary Newberry severe afternoon weather hit (a legend we weren't familiar with until after-the-fact). So, there we were, probably 2 miles across the lake, with a gully-washer for the ages just getting underway...and this was the moment that the motor on the rental boat decided to quit running. Fortunately, my fishing buddy brought his schizophrenic (diagnosed, gets a government check for being crazy) younger brother along, so he threw him overboard and told him to start kicking his feet behind the boat...if I wasn't so fucking wasted at the time, I would have found it cruel, rather than funny....but his bro was used to it. It fucking poured that night (although when it let up, I caught a fatty brown trout. Great fishing for browns up there, some over 20 pounds). When it came time to settle in fopr the evening, a tragedy struck -- we discovered that at some point during the afternoon excitement, we'd lost our bag of weed. So, first light of the AM, we walked down to the lodge, figuring it must be in the rental boat. It wasn't...but when we got to the lodge, it was 34 fucking degrees, under clear skies. Over a 60 degree swing in a few hours...how the hell do you dress for that? We broke camp and left around mid-day, and the temp was around 90. Crazy freaking part of the world. GREAT trip. Oddly enough, a couple of days later, our next rental boat decided to shit the bed right in the mouth of Nehalem Bay, basically in the breakers...where a 12 foot renatl boat had NO business being...but of course, we were so wasted, using the rental boat as a fancy surfboard in the jetty jaws seemed like a good idea at the time.I might just take up Dins/Timmay's idea about the Newberry crater which is about 40 miles from Bend, Or. Anything that compares to Crater Lake has to be great. I mean, looking down on Crater Lake on a clear blue warm day has to be one of the better Kodak moments a person could experience.
Why, as a matter of fact, I do. Right on Mt Hood. Be there in a couple of weeks or so.
I'll tell you how it went.

I'd give some serious thought to Maine. Gorgeous in the summertime. Plenty of camping/hiking and general outdoors 'stuff' to do.
Spend a day fishing on one of the Belgrade Lakes. Spend some time at the docks watching lobster fishermen come in... then buy some dirt cheap right off their boat... just don't tell dins. There's some pretty good golf up there. Fuck.. it's all wlderness... rent a motorcycle and just CRUISE.
Maine's a great place.

Don't forget -- Luth is old, even by your standards and mine (although less by mine). That place prolly cost about $30,000 or so back when he purchased it.Dinsdale wrote:Shit...you never told me you were wealthy, Luth.
